Rust-belt tools seem to be cheap -- or workers are careless. Around
here, lost reflective sticks to snap onto (2mm) spokes seem to be the
dominating usable road litter. Not worth picking up, though, because a
complete set, to embellish each spoke of a wheel, is required to legally
replace conventional wheel reflectors. And no Real Cyclist wants to be
associated with the sort of semi-informed, overcompliant, superstitious,
N95-masked types who tend to use these sticks on their heavy, untidy
bicycles.

You could save a lot of weight by instead finding 1 Satang chips!
<https://www.leftovercurrency.com/exchange/thai-baht/thai-baht-coins/1-satang-coin-thailand/>
Not the cyclist king, but, especially compared to Western politicians,
his image looks highly respectable even on a worn, light coin.

At various times I was a certified aircraft welder which in those days
was usually stainless and aluminum but I never head of titanium (:-) I
just looked it up and apparently it is yieldable with TIG. It sounds
sort of scary but then we used to weld magnesium (:-)

Interesting. I don't remember ever saw a 1 satang coin. But I just
asked my wife about it and she assured me that they really did have
them and when I mentioned that I had never seen one she laughed and
said, "Of course not. You are a rich foreigner so it is 1 baht for
you".

Many places. Usually, reflective rings on the tire, or rim, are equally
acceptable. I have not looked up Singapore, where such code might boost
the global average risk of actual enforcement & fines.

Yes, small ones are spectacular. I don't want to be around a
large one!

A similar event I've never personally witnessed is thermit (or thermite) welding. To me, it's
fascinating that such common components as rust and aluminum can generate such an
energetic reaction.

In theory they are required in USA but enforcement ended
long ago, despite continual revision of the rules.

I blundered across this article which you might find interesting:
"9.1.1 Fundamentals of the Starting of Metal Fires Using Titanium
Fires as an Example"
<https://aeroenginesafety.tugraz.at/doku.php?id=9:91:911:911>

There are no page numbers, so scroll down to this illustration:
<https://aeroenginesafety.tugraz.at/doku.php?id=9:91:911:911#prettyPhoto/23/>
"In air pressure of one bar, titanium ignites at about 1600 °C."
Notice that the ignition temperature of Ti varies with oxygen content
(pressure). If you weld Ti in an oxygen free atmosphere, it should
not burn. Oxy-acetylene welding would not make any sense, but
resistance welding or TIG should work. Ti bicycle frames are TIG
welded with an argon gas purge of the inside of the tubing.

A new company, LTA Research, is in the process of building massive rigid airships.
Think "Hindenburg" but with helium instead of hydrogen. They've been working with engineering
faculty and students at Akron University, and have a massive "airdock" in Akron where one of the ships
is being built. (It's left over from Zeppelin days.)

I was recently at an air show in Akron, Ohio where the company had a tiny booth. They had samples of
the skeleton construction: Carbon fiber tubes, maybe 3" diameter, bonded into very complex
titanium lugs. One sample lug had about six sockets for tubes at complex three dimensional
angles, some quite acute. The Ti tubes were welded together with absolutely gorgeous
"stack of dimes" welds. They were beautiful, even deep into the crotch of two tubes with
an angle of about 30 degrees between them. I was told the welding was manual, not robotic.
I was pretty impressed by the craftsmanship.

I've never welded titanium but what you describe as "stack of dime"
sounds like normal TIG welding.

That's it. All I'm saying was the welding looked beautifully done, even in spots where the geometry
made it difficult.

Very nice, see? I told you booming Akron is the town to be! All the
industries fleeing Europe will soon find their new homes in Beautiful
Ohio. TINA, because climate change, as we all know, will rapidly
inundate, or just blow away, South Carolina and Alabama. Before Tycoon
Tom arrives, with Scharfie soon after, you should hurry to invest in a
few chemically gifted industrial areas, and sketchy apartment blocks!
Add covered bicycle parking, ebike chargers, and table tennis -- and the
immigrants will be delighted! Tuffbiker Joerg will donate plans for a
Jorge-approved Californian beergarden meeting the diverse tastes of
Polish, Czech, German, Dutch, and Belgian refugees.

Gotta go, catch the latest virus at Wiesn.

I had to look up TINA.
Thanks!

BTW Frank, I published that helmet conversation in part because I thought you would get a chuckle out of it.

Um... thanks?

I'd read about that effect long ago - that is, Australian magpies attacking cyclists' helmets. I won't bother to
look it up, but one article described people trying different modifications to helmets to make them less
prone to magpie attack. Weirdly, the modification that worked best (IIRC) was to cover the helmet with
fake human hair. (Are magpies just objecting to Australia's mandatory helmet laws?)

In more reasonable countries, one could just take off the helmet. In Oz, not so.

I just googled TINA and got the answer.
"Tina" (crystal meth) – The drug that spoils the party.
The party drug, crystal meth, also known in the gay community as
"Tina" (abbreviation of Christina) has become popular in this
community.

Thanks for describing your approach to "google reasearch," but
unfortunately, you did not get the correct answer; Andrew did, in noting
both capitalization, and the most likely context.

Tina happens to be one of my favorite satirist twitter accounts, but
farther down, note the 1980's high-tech wheel reflectors designed to
scare the hell out of Warsaw Pact!

As I have mentioned so many times, Slocum is nothing more than a Google robot. He hasn't a passing bit of intelligence of his own and he can't tell when Google misleads him because his entire intelligence sources from Google. It would be fine if Google made any effort to be correct but they purposely mislead the public for their own political goals. This is why I have always included them in their part of the Slime Stream Media.
