And even Zero Hedge notes that it is the owner (actually his lawyer) who claims that the car ignited "spontaneously".

If you think that you can claim on insurance if the car ignited "spontaneously" you are unlikely to mention how you managed to get it to start burning.

The charred remnants probably won't lend themselves to detailed forensic examination, but Tesla will be motivated to spell out what actually happened, even if the owner isn't.

Hey SL0WMAN, Tesla will blame the owner even though this is clearly a manufacturing defect. This will get worse as Teslas age.

But they don't seem to have got around to it yet. And one has to wonder why Flyguy thinks that "this is clearly a manufacturing defect" - all the evidence we have so far is one burnt-out Tesla.

When you see a burnt-out car, the usual thought is that somebody torched it to destroy evidence, but Flyguy doesn't have much imagination.

> This will get worse as Teslas age.

Or so Flyguy likes to thinks - and his thinking isn't up to much.

It's an experimental battery structure:
https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/tesla-structural-battery-pack-first-picture/

"The structural battery pack is expected to be first used in the Model Y that is going to be built at Gigafactory Berlin and in the new Model S Plaid."

"The move is seen as bold in the industry since most electric car makers are trying to protect the battery pack while Tesla is planning to use it as an integral structural part of its electric vehicles."

I.e. No thick steel between battery cells and flying rocks.

more like the thick steel will do double duty as protection and container

"Our client was trapped & could have died", but he escaped and didn't. What do they mean he was "trapped"?

Why don't we hear about the many, many ICE gasoline fires? I recall one that resulted in hundreds of other cars catching fire in a parking structure in a Scandinavian country.

This is sure to make Larson cower in corner.

Silly boy. "New" and "experimental" are not the same thing. Every EV on the road would be "experimental" if they were the same. Every new design feature in an ICE as well for that matter.

Largely because they aren't all that cheap. Of course an anonymous troll wouldn't want to draw attention to himself. The local cops might wonder where he got the money to pay for it, and Cursitor Doom is the kind of twit who gets sold a tax avoidance scheme that is actually tax evasion when anybody starts looking hard.

Wow! You must never drive any car then. I believe it was a Jeep Cherokee that hackers ran into a ditch. No one has ever hacked a Tesla other than having direct wired access to the car interior. Even that did not access anything that could be used to crash the car. Your video starts off saying "they may never know..." and offers no evidence of any wrong doing at all. What's more, the car Michael Hastings was driving was a Mercedes-Benz C250!

As these features become more and more universal, even cars without the features will have the hardware and the software with the feature disabled. So any hacking vulnerabilities will be present in all versions. So more likely than not in the next 10 years you WILL buy one whether you like it or not.

I don't have an answer for you but ISTM that you could work it out with
the battery specs.

Tesla model X or S with long range battery = 100 kWh = 3.6e+8 J / 544 kg = 662 J/g

TNT = 54.39 kJ/mol / 227 g/mol = 240 J/g

That seems surprising.

Gasoline - 46 MJ/kg = 46,000 J/g

That is even more surprising!!! I guess that's why the really big non-nuclear bombs are fuel-air explosives.

Tesla battery weight - https://weightofstuff.com/how-much-does-a-tesla-weigh/

TNT data - https://fas.org/man/dod-101/navy/docs/es310/chemstry/chemstry.htm

Gasoline data - Google scraping data here - https://energyeducation.ca/encyclopedia/Energy_density
also XKCD.

That's a bit of a cheat. TNT includes it's own oxidant - the three nitro groups.

Gasoline doesn't. It's a hydrocarbon - roughly CH2 - which requires three atoms of oxygen to deliver it's energy of combustion. For each kilogram of hydrocarbon you need 3.43 kilograms of oxygen so it delivers about 10,430 J/gm of stuff consumed. Still a lot more than TNT or a battery.
