Sure, some people were terrified. We had "duck and cover" drills in
grammar school, which I thought were funny. Some of the kids were
terrified. Now, as adults they probably wear masks when they are alone
and buy hand santizier by the gallon. Can't be too careful!

Then the Soviets detonated their first H-bomb, and all the civil defense
measures became pointless, so life went back to normal.

Sure have a condescending attitude towards others, eh? I wonder
how many of your customers fit your description?

Ever have a heated argument with a guy who was wearing a sidearm?

Ever been challenged to design something and just run away like a little girl?
Hide under a desk -- in terror?

No, just describing some. I admit I don't admire fear as a dominant
emotion; it's usually miscalibrated.

Being afraid of everything? Not many. It's rare among good technical
people, engineers and scientists. Managers are more likely to be
afraid of ideas and risks.

I don't recall a heated argument with anyone.

Little girl? I've known (and raised) some mighty gutsy girls. I like
them that way.

>Hide under a desk -- in terror?

I like design challenges, especially from serious customers with big
problems. Ships. Pipelines. Jet engines. Giant magnets. Big lasers.
Rockets. Lithography. Timid doesn't solve big problems.

(Time to check the Keithley. There are definitely some non-exponential
things going on. DA on the hours time scale?)

So, people who can't fully participate in life and the activities that
they previously enjoyed is NOT a "big problem", in your book.

Or, you're just not up to the challenge.

I'll let you climb back under that desk, now -- little girl.

Why do you keep using "girl" as an insult? I've always liked girls.
Over or under desks.

Fine. I'll learn to call you John Little Girl Larkin. Wear
it as a badge of honor!

(note that I've not failed to notice how you keep avoiding the
challenge! Well, not everyone has the intellectual curiosity and

That is one scary graph! The same thing is happening in many places, but when you've had a high rate of infection of other strains the delta variant does not present like this until it is several times as prevalent as the others. But that is what the delta is doing in most places. Unless we take more effective measures to prevent the spread, we will see a huge infection curve like we did last fall.

Does anyone know if that curve was dominated by a new strain at that time?

Like I said, it is easy to cite statistics, but not so easy to understand them.

Mind bogglingly poor thinking going on here. How does zero death reports equate to zero risk? I suppose it is pretty amazing in the previous century (the 20th) there were no COVID deaths. Does that mean no precautions should be taken anywhere in the world? Do you have to wait for people around you to drown before you take precautions against the river flooding when it's been raining for days and days?

> Really, thinking is better than fear in most cases.

Thinking can be good, but only if it is good thinking. So much thinking about COVID is pretty poor and leads people to shun masks and vaccines which clearly saves lives.

> I suppose 0 * e^0 is still exponential growth.

Perfect example of something cited with very little understanding apparent.

It would seem Larkin is so accustomed to having "little" mentioned around him that he didn't even notice.

Oh, the insurance bill for shark attack coverage isn't a major issue
ANYWHERE, so why pick on Utah?

You take precautions against FUTURE damage, not past. Mindlessly expecting
tomorrow to replicate today's statistics is an illness, not a sane assessment of risk.

The popular definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Why does anyone respond to Larkin when he is obviously trolling? What is it that compels us to point out in exquisite detail what is wrong with his reasoning as if something might just change in his behavior? Has Larkin ever shown any sign of actually understanding the arguments put before him and considering what is wrong with his own reasoning? EVER?
