Your problem is a combination of old SSL/TLS version and an old
browser. TLS is just an updated version of SSL. SSL (secure socket
layer) is what makes the "s" in https provide some level of web
browser security.

First, check what your web browser and MacOS are able to support:
<https://clienttest.ssllabs.com:8443/ssltest/viewMyClient.html>
My Windoze 10 Firefox 107.0 machine shows that it supports TLS 1.2 and
1.3 which are what you want to see.

Next, check the web server, to see what it supports:
<https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/index.html>
Checking townhall.com (this will take about 3 mins)
<https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=www.townhall.com&latest>
shows that it support only SSL 1.3. If your MacOS/Browser only
support 1.1 and 1.2, you won't be able to establish a secure
connection. Your browser will complain that it can't open a secure
connection and (if so configured) will send the URL to your favorite
search engine for resolution, in this case duckduckgo.com.

Also, the SSLlabs.com report for TownHall.com indicates:
"This site works only in browsers with SNI support"
SNI is "server name support" and is an extension to TLS. See the list
of supported browsers at:

Drivel: I see some oddities in the townhall.com SSL/TLS
configuration. The first IP (104.18.12.37) supports only TLS 1.3,
while the other IP's support both TLS 1.2 and 1.3. In theory, if I
connect to the 2nd IP (104.18.13.37), I should be able to connect
using TLS 1.2. However, I get an encryption error message when I try
that.

A big Mac is only necessary for large-scale print and industrial design work, which I no longer do. In fact, a new Mac will only cause trouble by demanding newer apps which then won't open old files their predecessors made. (I keep a whole row of old Macs together with their OS and applicable apps standing in a room of their own in the loft to open old work.) I see no point in buying a tabletop Mac to impress fashion victims. We anyway have other newer Macs in the family that I can borrow if there's a problem looking-forward, rather than those which we're discussing which are all looking-backward.

I had previously checked SSL/TLS using:
<https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=www.townhall.com>
I found that (104.18.12.37) supported only TLS 1.3 while their other
IP addresses supported TLS 1.2 and 1.3. If you had connected to
townhall.com, and their load balancing system had delivered you to
104.18.12.37, you would have received an error message because it only
supports TLS 1.3 and your ancient browser probably only supports TLS
1.2. I'm not sure about your browser because you provided no test
results and no detail on your browser or MacOS version. The oddity at
the townhall.com end seems to have been resolved this morning. All
their IP's now support both TLS 1.2 and 1.3. Problem solved.

pH: Could you recheck if you can now get to townhall.com without an
error message?

Meanwhile, TLS 1.2 browser support is all that is needed.

Green Energy outside of dams breeding hydraulic energy do not exist. This is nothing more than Flunky showing his ignorance again. The return energy from both the wind and solar farms almost never return their energy expended to build and install them. THERE ARE specific cases where they make sense but they are rare and only over very small areas. Solar cells are so inefficient that it is close to impossible to believe that there is EVER any manner in which they could EVER pay their own manufacturing costs. They are paying your electric bills to put solar cells on your roof - gee, they are really a good deal right? The Government actually pays for 90% of their cost and then pays PG&E if you are using solar cells and tell you that these things are paying your bills. Under NO atmosphere in direct sunlight they claim that the VERY best silicon cells make 47% efficiency. Most are chemical cells of less than 20% conversion efficiency.

And remember, this is at 90 degrees sun to cell. This occurs only between about 1 hour before and 1 hour after high local noon. This doesn't even count the latitude changes of the seasonal sun.

Freaks and fools that love to say they have answers when they don't are so common that they ought to be exposed.

And now the leftists are so freaked out by the failure of wind and solar that they will lie about it. "Renewable Energy PG&E delivers some of the nation’s cleanest energy. Today, 33 percent of our delivered electricity comes from renewable sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, small hydroelectric and various forms of bioenergy."

See - they include "small hydro-electric" without defining what that means. Geothermal is EXTREMELY rare but California has a couple of sites. Can you make energy that way? Sure, BUT IT IS ALSO MAKING CO2 since it is volcanic in origin. So how can you call that "renewable green energy"? Without a wind blowing the levels of CO2. Perhaps Flunky has a great explanation of what "bioenergy" is. The fact is that the TOTAL energy supplied by solar and wind in California is 2%. So why the lies?

You could have asked instead of insinuating. I get the idea that I
know something about SSL/TLS problems because I've seen it many times
during the 37 years I spent fixing networks, servers and computahs.
SSL/TLS errors are a common problem when dealing with older computers
and browsers.

Please note that I use Google references to substantiate my
information. Unlike your eidetic memory, I need to refresh
information that I haven't dealt with recently. I also learn new
things when using Google to research a topic. Google search is your
friend, not your enemy.

I've mentioned this before, but it doesn't hurt to repeat it. I judge
people by their willingness and ability to learn new things. You fail
badly in both willingness and ability. You intentionally cut yourself
off from sources that might teach you something new. You proclaim
them to be sources of errors or lies. I'm sure you can find some of
both in Google search and Wikipedia. The result of your intentional
ignorance is your amazing ability to get literally everything wrong,
as I've demonstrated many times. Being able to regurgitate what you
have read in TownHall.com doesn't mean you know anything.

That stepladder of TLS versions also explains why the iPad on my treadmill (third version, older than the Mac) will not open so many netsites.

However, it is hugely offensive and at least relatively irritating for the OS (or Chrome, or whatever is behind the OSs like Safari and Opera) to hold up the flow of information until you put in a code, after which they show you the page anyway. THERE ARE specific cases where they make sense but they are rare and only over very small areas. The pass from LA/Riverside to Pheonix has a fairly constant wind of the correct speed that allows a small profit to be made.
