Again, Dr John Powers is a Research Professor at the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University, Australia. His recent book The Buddha Party: How the People’s Republic of China Works to Define and Control Tibetan Buddhism (2016) is published by Oxford University Press.

He may be an authority on the Chinese Communist Party, but he doesn't speak for them either. In fact he's just saying what I was saying - that the CCP is anti-religion.

It wants to exert the kind of control on what it's subjects think that some religions seem to want. George Orwell's "1964" made the same claim, but that doesn't make Communism a religion - merely an ideology, which isn't the same thing.

The Chinese Communist Party isn't a religion, and certainly isn't organised as a church. The "leading role of the communist party" makes it one more authoritarian aberration. It's not actually evil, but putting the party in the leading role means when you get some nut-case in charge they find themselves free to do all kinds of evil things which they wouldn't be able to get away with in a less authoritarian system.

What I'm saying is that stupid, misdirected anti-Communism doesn't do Communism any harm, and tends to devalue efforts to expose and correct the real defects of Communism. If they can get them to work. Nuclear weapons are complicated, and they need a fairly sophisticated technical support network to keep them working.
