The first calculator I ran into belonged to a rich school friend and was
also that HP35. I could make it work a lot better than him, but at
school I could get away with mental arithmetic and pretending to have
used a slide rule (writing SR in the margin to be allowed 3 sig fig).

I finally had to give in and get a calculator for the crystalline
materials course in the first year at university- answers to 6 sig fig.
I had a TI SR-51A it survived very well before eventually wearing out.

Dunno which is the best HP one. I found a nice SR59 emulator for mine.

You have the kestrokes mixed up. It would be 1, then Enter, the number, then divide "/".

What sort of crazy calculator are you using?

I still like the HP35 in real life. The keys have a wondeful detent
feel, and the layout is simple and logical. I have several, but most
have gone flakey and of course the batteries are long dead.

Tulane was never a very progressive university (but a first-rank party
school.) Calculators were not allowed on tests because they would give
an unfair advantage to rich kids.

I did full-hull dynamic simulation of a 32,000 horsepower LASH ship on
an HP9100 desktop calculator, the first programmable RPN and
predecessor to the HP35. That got us some business.

The 9100 had no ICs; just transistors and a CRT display.

I haven't used an actual calculator in decades. I have Excalibur on the laptop and if I need anything more than that I use Forth. I don't have much need to crunch numbers that I can't do in my head.

Are there any calculators that understand the data types, like volts, amps, ohms, etc. and apply the appropriate equation? That would be a very handy tool. No more looking up equations. Hmmm... that might be a fun project.

google search. If you put something like 10volt/5ohm into google search it'll return 2 amperes

For some things. Other things it simply doesn't understand. It also requires an Internet connection. Heck, many apps on my phone require an Internet connection to show me information that was already pulled up, like Gmail. I can have it open to an email, minimize it. Then when I pull my phone out it won't display because it is trying to download it again and there's no connection. Stupid cell phone apps.

Oh, yeah. There's also the ads. Try calculating the energy in a 1 uF cap at 10V. You will get lots of advertisements for 1 uF, 10V capacitors. Or if you phrase it correctly, lots of links to calculators.

Google is great, right up to the point where you really need it, and it craps out.

The Australian troll has a very difficult time communicating in any
normal way with others.

Bozo Bill Sloman, the most frequent troll in this group, is an
attention-craving chronic liar who cannot be reasoned with...

"the user has posted under the same name in other places, so not
nym-shifting" (Bozo sucks at logic)

"the Mueller investigation was about Trump only because Trump made it so"
(Bozo lying)

"the concepts "male" and "female" are essentially social constructions"
(Bozo being weird)

Eddie's spam replies are getting longer and longer...

> Doe "troll format" postings.

The main reason for that is to keep track of nym-shifting trolls.
Nym-shifting is, or was, a common tactic of trolls. Trolls love the
charade. I love the mystery.

If it weren't for my "troll format postings", Eddie would be nym-shifting.

One user, one ID. Too bad Google doesn't allow such record-keeping (like
on Google Groups and YouTube). Helps hide their own misdeeds.

Nope Multi-register (mantissa) calculators are real in hardware and
software. In Windows, one simply enters the number then hits the
SINGLE 1/x key and the result appears.

What sort of crazy thinks you are better than everyone else are you
using?

It's simple logic. If you expose nym-shifting, it's less likely to
continue. The OBVIOUS reason behind nym-shifting is to hide one's persona.
And I have observed a radical decrease in nym-shifting over a long period
of time. They love(d) the masquerade. I love(d) the mystery.

This nym-shifting troll, who never before posted to this group until this
thread, snipped the relevant portion of my post in order to make its
flimsy assertion.

This guy's name is mentioned in the "Operations Manuals" spam. Has posted
to (sci.electronics.repair). Probably coincidence. Only The Shadow knows...

NOBODY likes the John Doe troll's contentless spam.

Yet, since Wed, 5 Jan 2022 04:10:38 -0000 (UTC) John Doe's post ratio to
USENET (**) has been 57.1% of its posts contributing "nothing except
insults" to USENET.

** Since Wed, 5 Jan 2022 04:10:38 -0000 (UTC) John Doe has posted at
least 1017 articles to USENET. Of which 123 have been pure insults and
458 have been John Doe "troll format" postings.

This posting is a public service announcement for any google groups

True, but not common in Android.

A smartphone is an excellent platform for a calculator. Unlike chess or a
first-person shooter, it isn't heavy on CPU usage but takes advantage of the
phone's CPU for calculations. The whole screen is a calculator.

The logic does not follow from what little evidence/argument you have
presented.

Therefore, those posters who wish to hide their persona by nym-shifting
will continue to wish to hide their persona and so will not care that
you are 'exposing' them. There persona is still hidden, so their
reason for nym-shifting remains in place.

Coorelation is not causation. Your "observed radical decrease" could
just as easily be explained by the gradual reduction in use of USENET
with the resulting few remaining members simply not being the ones that
nym-shifted (i.e., the nym-shifting trolls abandoned USENET for Reddit
or other web locales). And in fact, a reduction in nym-shifting being
caused by a substantial reduction in USENET usage is much more likely
the cause than anything you did, or did not, do yourself.

Please explain what other part of your post was relevant to your
assertion.

Arguing with a chronic liar is pointless. When you refute its lies, it
simply makes up more lies to cover those prior lies. It's fiction never
ends...

And yet, the clueless John Doe troll has continued to post incorrectly
formatted USENET articles that are devoid of content (latest example on
Thu, 14 Apr 2022 22:55:47 -0000 (UTC) in message-id
<t3a8pi$v6c$1@dont-email.me>).

NOBODY likes the John Doe troll's contentless spam.

Further, Troll Doe stated the following in message-id
<svsh05$lbh$5@dont-email.me> posted Fri, 4 Mar 2022 08:01:09 -0000
(UTC):

Yet, since Wed, 5 Jan 2022 04:10:38 -0000 (UTC) Troll Doe's post ratio
to USENET (**) has been 57.3% of its posts contributing "nothing except
insults" to USENET.

** Since Wed, 5 Jan 2022 04:10:38 -0000 (UTC) Troll Doe has posted at
least 1024 articles to USENET. Of which 123 have been pure insults and
464 have been Troll Doe "troll format" postings.

This posting is a public service announcement for any google groups
readers who happen by to point out that the John Doe troll does not even
follow the rules it uses to troll other posters.
