Aren't we glad that our highly-paid physics community has a command of basic arithmetic, then,
and bases the equatorial rotational velocity of 1674.364 mph on 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4
seconds of rotatiion, thus giving the correct circumference of the Earth at the Equator.

Even if you think they've chosen the wrong period of rotation.

The answer is...
they believe that this conclusion, made centuries ago by Isaac Newton, is anything *but* silly,

Geography does deal in facts, it is not nearly as subjective as, say,
the field of history, often mentioned in the same breath with it, and
it makes some use of mathematics in the drawing of map projections.

None the less, it certainly is not placed within science faculties at
post-secondary institutions.

Thus, while you are very likely correct, calling it a science doesn't seem
to be a terribly wrong-headed mistake; if it is not a science, it still comes
fairly close.

It doesn't come "fairly close."

It is far more descriptive than explanatory.

A geography course might describe the Himalayas without getting into the nitty-gritty of plate tectonics. Far more time will be spent on culture, languages, history and politics of that region.

Somehow, I remember that Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. That UCLA student might not even know what or where Nepal is.
