What happened? When former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson
testified before the Jan. 6 select committee this week, she also
introduced America to the head of Trump�s Secret Service detail at the
time of the Capitol riot: Robert Engel.

A recap of what she said: Hutchinson told the panel that on the
afternoon of Jan. 6, another Trump White House aide, Tony Ornato,
described an alarming interaction between Engel and Trump � who was
hellbent on going to the Capitol to be with his supporters. As
Hutchison recalled hearing from Ornato, Engel told the then-president
he'd be returning to the White House instead of going to the Capitol,
causing an irate Trump to lunge for the steering wheel of his vehicle,
then for Engel's clavicle.

What Engel said about it later: Nothing. Engel told the select
committee in his own closed-door interview earlier this year that he
kept his complete account of Jan. 6 private from his Secret Service
colleagues for at least 14 months, according to a person familiar with
his interview. That would include anything Trump did or didn't do in
the presidential vehicle.

Engel interviewed in March and was asked whether he had ever shared his
observations of Jan. 6 with other secret service agents. Engel replied
no.

It�s unclear if Engel has since discussed the events of that day within
the agency, but his testimony to the committee underscores the degree
to which a major observer of Trump�s movements on Jan. 6 kept his
account close to his vest. A Secret Service spokesman did not
immediately respond to a request for comment.

More on Cassidy's side: Hutchinson said Engel was present while Ornato
described the episode featuring a frantic Trump and and did not
intervene or contradict it. Trump has denied the account, and the
Secret Service has suggested both men may provide new testimony to
respond.

The backstory: POLITICO previously reported that Engel had interviewed
with the committee, describing himself and Trump taking differing views
on sending Trump to the Capitol as a deadly riot was growing.

There may be an assumption or even a culture that one cannot fully
retain the trust of protectees unless one keeps all the secrets of
protectees.

In addition to the above, there's also the acknowledged fact that
there's a pro-Trump faction within the Secret Service, and it's not
implausible that they'd be willing to lie to protect his reputation.

Every major western country has their own equivalent to the Secret
Service and there doesn't seem to be huge chatter about the job these
people do protecting their charges.

There's also a pro-Dem faction in the FBI, which has already been caught
trying to undermine a presidential election. Of course that was
downplayed, if not outright ignored, by the corporate media.

Because if Trump wanted to accompany the insurrectionists to the Capitol
and stroll into the House chamber as a conqueror, it supports the claim
that Trump himself intended insurrection.

Further, the only way I can make sense of what happened with Mike Pence
in the basement of the Capitol is if the US Secret Service is divided in
its loyalties. Some are Trumpers, loyal to the man (or at least to the
MAGA principles of conservative white supremacy). Others are loyal to
the U.S. Constitution that they swore an oath to uphold above all else.

Ordinarily, as BTR himself has said, a Secret Service protectee is
bundled into an escape vehicle whether they like it or not (even in
cases where they don't fear their own USSS detail). But for Pence to
say, "I'm not getting in that car," and for it to stick, there had to
have been at least one Secret Service officer present (hopefully more)
who also distrusted the other Secret Service officers present, resulting
in a standoff.

This is significant because it directly implies that some Secret Service
agents are co-conspirators in the plot to disrupt the certification of
the election. The United States Secret Service is not a Praetorian
Guard. Its loyalty is supposed to be to the Constitution and the rule
of law, not to any one man. Given how Trump reportedly tried to get
James Comey to swear personal loyalty to him, is it so far fetched that
Trump asked the same of numerous Secret Service agents as a test?

The premise of your statement is incorrect. If anything, Trump wanted to try
to convince the rioters to leave. After all, he offered to send supplemental
security to D.C. that day but both Nancy "Stretch" Pelosi and the mayor
declined his offer of extra security, plus he had just authorized the
transfer teams to begin their work.
