Heh heh - I dunno - pack when >I< was in junior high the main rugby
coach was a retired pro football player. At senior high my football
coach kept his 1958 Rose Bowl team photo on his filing cabinet in his
office.

Simply 2 coaches playing pro football and having played on a winning
Rose Bowl team doesn't say "loser" to me. (Admittedly my high school
class is having their 50 year reunion this fall so it's been awhile
for both these fine gents) One of them is still going strong at 90
while the other was at least still with us in 2016 (I attended his
retirement party) .

My serious answer as a former math teacher is that I can definitely
see how a political tinge can be put on math "word problems" in subtle
or not so subtle ways but pi will always equal 3.1415926...... in any
culture you care to name and it isn't racist or imperialist to exclude
"pi = 4" from the list of correct answers.

And this is nowhere more so than in engineering calculations when you
had BETTER get your design right since if your math is out the
building you're building won't be safe and real people could be
injured or killed and that doesn't depend on the ethnicity of the
architect or structural engineer.

2 + 2 = 5 only comes up in Nineteen Eighty-Four in the interrogation
of Winston Smith by O'Brien and that's a fable of how things can go
badly badly wrong.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the accuracy of "2 + 2 = 4" is at
issue here. Rather, it's some whites' use of that particular
kindergarten equation to symbolize the "plain common sense" that blacks'
supposedly long to overturn in furtherance of dumbing-down America.

(So, no, "3 + 3 = 6" wouldn't suffice for that, as it involves higher
math. Meanwhile, I thought the legendary 'pi' idiocy was non-partisan.)

I well remember my grade 9 algebra teacher who was feeling whimsical
and wrote that equation in a little used piece of blackboard behind
his desk and told his stronger students (one of which was me) to come
back to see him after graduation if one ever learned the proof of
that.

Years later I was training to be a math teacher and served under him
and reminded him of that equation and asked him if he still wanted
somebody to demonstrate it to him - I was then in the one year
teacher's training program following my math degree (all of which he
knew) and he said that yes he DID remember that day and acknowledged
that given my undergraduate degree I probably DID know the proof
now....

Great guy - one of those who one wished could live forever but alas
died about 5 years ago.

I'm just talking about a sign of the times. Even as a kid I liked Dick
Cavett. Then, when I saw him interviewing Hendrix on YouTube a few

On the other hand it's not at all a racial justice thing as some might
imply.

I do know one math teacher nearly got in serious trouble for teaching
his 11th grade class the mnemonic for Pi to a group of high school
juniors "Sir, I need a drink alcoholic of course!" which if you count
the letters in each work goes 3,1415926 - there's a longer version
giving it to some 100 places but I couldn't memorize the verse while I
COULD memorize that phrase.

On the other hand I get ultra grumpy about those whose insist on
capitalizing Black while insisting white NOT be capitalized since when
we're talking ethnicity has to be either all caps or no caps - what's
racist s to capitalize one without the other.
