I won't have time for critiques today -- I'm catching a 4:15 train for an extended weekend adventure.

I will, however, say that GD's poem left me unimpressed. I think George's meaning is that the women who are (from his perspective) servicing him make him nervous when they speak of love. If so, his speaker is not so much a ladies man, as a misogynist. Allowing for it to have been slightly OT, GD's poem just misses the mark. A pithy, cynical witticism needs to be clearly expressed in order to work. The meaning of George's poem is rather fuzzy: Are the women making him nervous because they speak of love when he wants service, or because they want service from him? When one has to guess at a joke's meaning, any humor it might have had is necessarily lost. A second point against it, is that both readings present stereotypical points of view. A witticism should shatter a cultural belief -- not support it.

I looked up the lyrics to Cohen's "The Death of a Ladies Man," and was even less impressed. The Donkey claims GD was responding to another poem -- although the title attests otherwise.

Like I asked, what makes you think George and Zod don't know Leonard Cohen's poetry?

Obviously they do.

HTH and HAND.

I doubt that Steve the MEatpuppet really believes that. They just said
that to pretend that NG knew Cohen's work, by claiming that the "other
side" doesn't. Typical troll tactic from a typical troll.

And bad logic: if one party's wrong, it doesn't make the other party
right. Sometimes both parties arguing a fact can be wrong.

NG has a point: in Cohen's poem, the man calls it love and the woman
calls it service. That's the conventional view; I changed it to give my
speaker an unconventional view.

My speaker is a star surrounded by groupies. I was basing it on Cohen.
That doesn't have to spelled out in the poem; I just added it for
background "commentary".

No, as Will said, that is not the source text for the verse. It is one
source text for the title. (The other source is the challenge topic.)

As noted, this thread was opened by MP simply to troll me, and it was
done as a "poetry challenge" so that troll-turned-literary critic
NastyGene could troll too, under the guise of literary criticism. Note
though, that as soon as NG's claim about the "source text" was
challenged, they went back to undisguised trolling.

However, since only Cohen "fans" would know the subject Cohen poem, your poem fails. It has no truth or transformation. Is the "conventional" view that men call it love? Cohen seems to call it porn.

Women don't want "service." The groupies are looking for an association/encounter with a famous person, perhaps fantasizing a more permanent connection with them (rock star falls in love with anonymous fan), and some want to get pregnant by the guy and get child support (ask basketball players about this).

Since we think that Leonard Cohen's "work" is excrement, we don't care to guess what lyrics you are trying to mimic. Since you added the title, a reader would assume that you are flipping (the bird) on "The Death of a Ladies Man." If you weren't, then it would take a lot more than 4 lines to "transform" his crap into something new and less stinking. Your poem does not stand on its own.

George Dance, your assumptions (mind reading) are incorrect. We don't care about your "source text," and as we have said before, we are not fans of Leonard Cohen. We are not going to research Cohen's lyrics to find what you thought was good to semi-plagiarize (pay tribute to). We wrote an original poem, as did others. You couldn't think of anything original, even for 4 lines.

We are sure that Ranger Dave will do his job thoroughly and professionally in his service to his country.

No, Leonard Cohen isn't as obscure as you seem to think.

The groupies are looking for an association/encounter with a famous person, perhaps fantasizing a more permanent connection with them (rock star falls in love with anonymous fan), and some want to get pregnant by the guy and get child support (ask basketball players about this).

It was a reference, but George Dance's poem stands alone as an original work.

Leonard Cohen is a folk singer -- not a poet.

It's only the illiterati who consider him to be such.

Wrong, Donkey.

Many folkies publish "poetry" books. Look at Bob D., for example.

Like I said, the illiterati consider them poets -- and I've no doubt that there are plenty of illiterates for you to quote.

But the great unwashed are not going to magically start smelling fresh and clean, and no chorus of howler monkey (regardless of its size) is going to magically transform a folk lyric into a poem.

Again, Leonard Cohen was a successful poet years before he became a folk singer.

You've been told this numerous times.

You're confused, Pendragon.

Leonard Cohen was a successful poet years before he became a folk singer.

This can be proven with multiple sources.
