Good question - the news story I heard was about one well known doctor
who holds a position on a hospital board saying he saw no reason to
deny it even if that was the only "symptom of distress"

That's a long way from handing out cyanide pills with welfare checks.

In late 2016, my mother was dying of leukemia and had already decided not to do any more chemo after having endured two rounds. She was getting palliative care at home and I'd moved back to care for her and to make sure that the doctor, nurses and PSWs (personal support workers) did their jobs properly. Each week, the doctor would come and ask her some questions. During one of the doctor's visits, she told the doctor she wanted to have medically assisted death. I was sitting nearby as was the doctor and the nurse who came daily. This was completely out of the blue to all of us as she had insisted she was not in any pain throughout her illness. The doctor explained that he wasn't personally comfortable with assisted suicide (ditto for the nurse), which he said was the case for a lot of doctors, but that he could give her a phone number to be put in touch with a doctor who was willing to prescribe the necessary pills. (Medically assisted suicide had only been passed into law a few months earlier so the procedures were only just coming into place for the first time.)

When she and I spoke about it after the doctor and nurse left, she really just didn't want to be a burden and said maybe it was time to go to a hospice. I wasn't having any trouble caring for her thanks to the doctor, nurse, and PSWs so I suggested she hold off and we'd revisit that (and the medically assisted suicide) later if it came to that. A couple of weeks later, after another stroke - she'd had a couple already - she asked the doctor about it again - but he said she would no longer pass the lucidity test. (He didn't put it in those exact terms but essentially, he said that she wasn't sufficiently clear-headed to make that request any more. At the time, the law called for the person requesting assisting suicide had to be clearly lucid and definitely suffering from something terminal that had no reasonable chance of being cured by medical science, if I am remembering the principles correctly.) So she died in her own room a few weeks later of natural causes..

But they've apparently lowered the bar a LOT for who can get what they now call MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying). That led to at least one highly-publicized case of someone urging a veteran with PTSD to take MAID when all he wanted was proper treatment for his (very non-fatal) illness as Horny Goat has said. This incident was in all the major papers and caused quite a stir. I don't think anyone could reasonably dispute that this incident took place.
