I prefer a human cashier as it gets me out the door quicker but the two Meijers I shop at
never have more then two open and if there's a line, this sucks, though there's always a
longer line at the self-checkouts.

I feel the same about preferring a human cashier. I've only used the
self checkout a few times as the stores I shop at tend to only have
human cashiers. It's really only Walmart where I run into the self
checkout and I go there rarely.

I have the opposite experience. Very few lines at self-checkout (they have
more than a dozen kiosks) while the line for the one cashier on duty is often
in double digits.

Plus I like the self-checkout because I don't have to endure the inevitable
upsell by the cashier for the store's loyalty card scam.

At my local Safeway the ATM terminal NEVER shows the amount due till
it gets its approval thus causing the cashiers angst since I don't
start bagging until I see the amount on the terminal. They think I'm
holding up the line but somehow they must think I'm old-fashioned
since I insist on knowing the amount spent before I'll leave the
cashier's area.....

Don’t you have the bag as you go?

At the stores here, they give you a running total as you scan each item.
Then you tell the machine you want to pay and the total is deplayed at
all times.

Kroger are the only ones around here running the loyalty card scam.
That's why I never shop there because prices are sky high if you don't
have one.

We also have this one store that has this "cost + 10%" scam, they claim
every item is marked at their cost, then they add 10% to your total
when you check out. That's kind of deceptive if you ask me because a
lot of people don't know about it or forget it while they're shopping.
Plus I know they have a lot of items that are marked higher at the
start than Walmart or somebody.

Well yes but I don't actually tender my debit card till I see the
amount they're wanting me to pay for. Only a cretin would blindly do
otherwise - though 2 days ago I had enough larger items that I was
only 3/4 way through getting it off the belt and into my bag (for ex.
large packages of paper towels)

Safeway's Jewel midwest stores dont show the final sale price until payment time. I've taken items out and back to the selves because of this stupid feature.

Michigan used to have a law requiring that every item (larger then a candy bar, IIRC)
had to have a price sticker or ink stamp on each individual item but they got rid of
that years back, as the grocery stores complained it added too much to their labor
costs (and I guess they had a point).

But it's my understanding that we still have a law on the books that mandates the
store must charge the advertised price (now mounted on the shelf) regardless of
what the cash register rings it up as.

Just to be safe, I take a photo of stuff that's on sale, (3 for $6.00 or whatever)
as I noticed a couple of times (after getting home...) that I was charged more
at the register then what the price tag on the shelf stated.

I’ve had my paper towels delivered for years. Even when I still drove, it
was a little red sports car that didn’t want me taking advantage of any
discounts on large packages of multiple rolls. :-)

The larger Meijers I go to has something like 26 traditional human operated cash registers,
though as I said, there are never more than two in operation. Dunno why don't pull them out
and put in more self-checkouts?

Few if any larger grocery stores still mark items individually anywhere
for the reason you state, I was talking about the price marked on the
shelf.

Good for Michigan. We have eternally consumer-unfriendly Republicans
running our state.

We have this grocery store (not the above one) that will mark their
Lay's chips down for a holiday weekend, but leave the sign up on the
rack for several days after the sale expires. I never notice it until I
scan my receipt when I get home and I've gone back and called them out
on that a couple of times.

I don't use enough paper towels to need to buy a large package. I
bought a two pack last month and it will likely last me well into
2024. Same goes for the twelve pack of toilet paper I bought and
walked home with the other day.

During the initial stages of the Wuhan Flu when everyone was going nuts
for TP, the shelves at all the local stores were bare, so I had to buy
off Amazon, which was importing it directly from China. The package I
got was covered in Chinese writing and the rolls were smaller than
normal but I got twice as many of them. The thing is, that TP was far
superior to anything I've ever gotten off the shelves of an American
store. Just a quality product. I've been buying in bulk direct from the
ChiComs ever since.

I’ve never seen a self check out that worked without a human standing there
to override it constantly. That’s why the check stands are empty because
the checkers are they’re working the self check out.

In one of the dozen Dollar General stores in my county the one closest
to me never seems to have anybody at the register at all much of the
time. One time I used their self-checkout and heard somebody holler
"thank you" from the office room as I was headed out the door, I guess
I was monitored on video.

We always have two or three. And we only have four self checkout stands.
None of which work.

I started buying the Charmin Essential line of products back then and
have just kept on buying them. Each roll is the same size as their
other products but tend to have at least double the TP per roll. Plus
the TP is stronger so it doesn't tear the way their normal product
does but still feels fine on my bum. Plus it is actually cheaper than
their regular line of products.

I get the store brand 1000 sheets per roll, the 4 pack is ch+eaper than
others. They're single ply, but each roll lasts at least a week (I pee a
lot),

I use the self-checkout at Safeway since I rarely buy more than one
bag's worth of groceries at a time. Eight or nine stations, only one
person monitoring them in person and faster than a manned checkout lane.

I’ll take your word for it, I’ve never used the self check out at Safeway
mostly because it’s always mobbed. I don’t know if that’s because it’s
popular or slow or what. Right next to it is the express lane that nobody’s
at. So that’s my destination.

Yeah, same with Scott Tissue's 1,000 sheet rolls.

BTW, a few years ago filled out a feedback form at the Scott paper
products website telling them about the last few 4-packs of their 1,000
sheet rolls I'd bought that had the same defect -- there were no
perforations in the middle of the sheets, only about an inch on either
side. This made it difficult to separate the sheets from the roll.

A few days later I received a response from a Scott paper VP, thanking
me for my feedback and saying that is not how their product is intended
to be manufactured. Later on I also received several store coupons for
Scott paper products in the mail. Also I haven't bought any Scott 1,000
sheet rolls with that same defect since making the complaint.

Fast forward to last week --- I see a news item on CNN about how Charmin
tissue has come out with this new "curvy" style separation between the
sheets that's supposed to make them easier to separate from the roll.

Maybe their problem all along was defective perforations, lol.
