Billie Piper was well-known (at least in the UK and other Commonwealth
Countries) before Doctor Who, but mainly as a pop singer - she was
likely far better known than Eccelstone at the time.

He's already been back in the role for the audio dramas.

The reality is that he had a massive ego and seemed to think he
deserved to be treated better / more importantly. He does seem to have
calmed down a bit as he has gotten older though.

Yeah I suppose as an ex-teenage popstar Billie Piper was very well
known, but not so much for her acting at that time obviously.
Christopher Eccleston was a big name, but not super-star big. He'd
been in a lot of TV shows and films. (That Derek Bentley film was
very highly regarded.) Christopher Eccleston doing Doctor Who was a
big thing at the time as he had that recognisable weathered face that
we'd all seen on the TV somewhere, but he wasn't a household name in
the UK like Billie Piper was.

In fairness to RTD, he takes the moral high ground and doesn't
respond to Eccleston's barbs... I'd love to have been a fly on the

There was no premier or film... Eccleston and Billie Piper were on a
Doctor Who Q&A panel at a sci-fi convention.
