I have my moments as well, not that I do any high walking ur running,
but the fear can hit at the oddest times, like riding a rented moped
around the island of Levkas one time, with Jude on the back, and a
continuous 49deg drop of 1000m down to the sea on such a flimsy thing
(the moped, that is) made me actually turn back the way we'd come. Or
standing on am exposed arrete while all my group followed the mountain
guide down the steep side - I was first there, last to leave, and just
standing right at the ridge for 15 minutes helping everyone get over,
not actually skiing, had somehow kicked in the anxiety.

Wierd thing, the mind.

I really don't like going down steep uneven steps[0], but generally I'm
more comfortable running down a steep slope than trying to walk down it.
It's a confidence thing, letting gravity do most of the work and trying
to move your legs fast enough that they don't get in the way.

[0] Some bits of the Hadrian's Wall path spring to mind, but not (I
think) the race route

The scariest bit of the whole thing* was approaching Douglas from Onchan
Head where the footpath takes you through a bit of heather beyond which
all you can see is the sea, which you can hear crashing onto rocks that
you can't see, a couple of hundred feet below you. (See towards the end
of day 10)
This goes on for what seemed like miles, but is probably only about 200
feet, before a right turn takes you round the bottoms of peoples gardens
- some attractive, some just rubbish dumps.**

y'know, I think I might be the same.

This has been in my mind recently, as our garden path, while not
particularly steep, is uneven and can get slippery. A while back my
feet slipped away and I ended up on my arse. Since then, I've been
quite slow and cautious, and wondering if I've been given an insight
into doddery old age (quiet at the back there).

But, the route I used to run (before I moved house last year) had a
decent bit of downhill, some off road, and it didn't really bother me
then. So maybe the faster motion changes one's perception, or maybe
actually falling over has changed it, or both

I've taken a few minor tumbles in my regular walks. Yesterday crossing a small
stream, 10 of us only I managed to bollix it up and fill my boots with water.
Albeit I was #1 across so that gave the followers toe opportunity to learn how
not to do it.

There is the Camel Club across the courtyard, which judging by the
noises on Thursday nights, is fueled by some variant of bathtub
gin. But I value my liver too much to attempt drinking that rocket
fuel.

Some of the old timers here in the compound told me that when the
French were still around, they made some pretty decent wine, too bad
they've all buggered off. Now it's just a few die-hard Americans and
the odd Brit.

Still, with the near daily drone incursions, and the occasional
missile lobbed at the airport, it's not all boring.
