Whilst riding to my latest eye-test [1] I had the Traction Control and
ABS warnings come on (yellow and red, respectively – helpfully quite
large and bright).

“Oh dear, KTM electronics” I thought.

No, on closer inspection the cable on the rear sensor, clipped along
the brake hose, can readily slide along the clips to the point it rubs
against the tyre – and hey presto! Holed cable and yellow and red
warnings and an ABS failure.

So, it’s not “Oh dear, KTM electronics” but “Oh dear, Husqvarna design”.

I think I caused it when I pushed the bike back to turn it and it
brushed against a box in the garage. I was quite surprised that it is
so easy to move the sensor cable in its mounts – to the extent that it
could rub against the tyre just by brushing against an empty box.

It is not only a new bike for me, I bought it new in March, but it is
also a new, new bike and I think I had one of the early ones that
wasn’t a demo bike. It hasn't been around long.

So, it is possible that it’s a proper design problem for Husqvarna [2],
either that, or I’m clumsy idiot.

Place bets now!

[1] It looks as if I now have to wear glasses all the time. Tedious.

[2] A slight surprise given their expertise in off road machines.
Although, I doubt their motocross bikes have ABS.

I think I started wearing glasses when I was 10, around 65 years ago.

Yes, but for me it's down to the inexorable passage of time, the
encroaching shadow of mortality; not because I was defective as a minor.

Spare a thought for an EV pioneer. Today I had real smoke and an acrid
smell. The bike diagnostics said "OK". I'm beginning to think that
it's really a hard-coded placebo screen.

The only symptoms (so far) were an acrid smell and small wisps of
smoke when the motor was enabled, and it seems to have stopped doing
it, too. Other than that, it works fine. No warnings, hesitations,
power loss, flickering lights, odd charge levels or anything. Hints of
smoke seemed to come from the rear of the "fuel tank" area, which
appears to be just wiring.

I'm guessing that it's an abraded cable loom somewhere, but you'd have
though that some sensor somewhere would have picked it up.

A previous employer couldn't get one of the automatic tests to work in time for
a must go out of the door release so it went with a simple timer that counted
down then returned okay. Fixed on the QT in a subsequent patch.

> It looks as if I now have to wear glasses all the time

Crikey I had to admit defeat 20 years ago. My eyes are road legal so I don't
*need* for driving/riding but it does clarify things. For a while I managed with
a single contact on the bike but can't get contacts to correct both my
astigmatism and my near and long vision at the same time.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm currently experiencing
annoying issues with the Speed triple too.

It sporadically throws a transmission fault followed by an engine
check fault. It then disables the quick shifter and drops into limp
mode. It somewhat embarrassingly did it to me whilst
overtaking a line of traffic the first time.

Recycle the power and the transmission fault disappears,
the quick shifter returns to normal operation and it comes out of
limp mode but the engine check fault remains on the dash.

I took it back to the dealer who assured me that it needed a
software update which they did on the spot. The bike did it
again on the ride home from the dealer a couple of miles from
home. So I phoned them up and accused them of just resetting
the bike using diagnostic software and bullshitting me about the
software update. They then took my bike back for a week, giving
me another speed triple as a loaner. It hasn't done it again since
but I think (from checking around) that it's only a matter of time
before it re-occurs. Lots of owners are having the same problem.
Whilst I don't think there is actually a real problem, it's more likely
a software/transducer problem that will get ironed out hopefully
fairly soon.

Not only is it bloody annoying, it's also sapping my confidence
in what is otherwise an amazing bike.

It's not the first problem it's had. The first and oddest was
discovered when I was fitting the Scottoiler. For reasons I can't
remember I took the front sprocket cover off to find it had melted at
the front. It had only done a couple of hundred miles.

The melt couldn't be seen in normal use, I took some pictures of it,
put it back on and emailed the dealer with my discovery. They gave me
a replacement. I've yet to fit it.

The other was a weeping fork seal which stopped after a couple of days
(weeping, not leaking so didn't lose a lot) - leaked enough to stain
the outside of the brake caliper. I've washed it since.

It did flash up "Immobiliser fault, engine will not restart", early on.
I've had a certain type of railway engine do this (without the
immobiliser bit) so I ignored it. It restarted fine. Hasn't done it
since.

One of the amusing bits of current ownership is the Husqvarna dealer
(https://freestylebikes.co.uk/) hasn't had this model of bike before
(obvs) and it's Huqvarnas first "big" bike. The mechanics normally
work on the off-road bikes and the smaller 400s.

The optional extras had been delivered in dribs and drabs because of
supply problems from Husqvarna (probably down to chip shortages). So
the mechanics take longer than the book allows as they try to work out
how to get it in pieces and where the extra bits go.

The tyre pressure management system has finally arrived and will be
fitted at the 9,200 mile service next week. When it also gets new
tyres and a new, sigh, ABS sensor.

The 18,400 mile service is the big one with valves. That'll be another
opportunity for my bike to be the mechanics' guinea pig.

I can't see the clocks or sat nav, distance is ok. I was also having a
problem with oncoming headlights.

The optician said that the correction to distance vision would help as
it reduces the halo effect of the headlights. I hope it does as it is
becoming a literal and metaphorical headache.

It helped SWMBO. My vision is OK for distance, had to start wearing
glasses for reading about 15 years ago - I can make out computer screens
and read books in bright sunlight (additional focussing from the pinhole
effect of the pupil, I imagine) but when I couldn't read Private Eye
(which is printed in about 6pt) or articles in bike magazines where the
text was superimposed on pictures, it was time for glasses.

I do have a pair for distance too, but they have negligible effect and I
never wear them. I keep meaning to try them at night but never get round
to it.

I started when I was around 14, but I fancy it ought to have been earlier.

I've got so used to mine that often I can't find them: not because I'm
not wearing them, but because I am.

Fix for badly adjusted headlights long overdue. Draconian enforcement of
the law is needed.

Fix for dipstick non-dippers, ditto.

Same here. I resorted to distane glasses for the first time when I
rode down to Devon a few weeks ago. I'm good in the right eye;
technically illegal in the left, but for driving you only need one
good eye.

Ah, ISWYM.

The 401 is similarly equipped and loosely clipped, but the run of the
hose/sensor cable and the positioning of the silencer make it much
harder to inadvertently snag it.

I can do as you demonstrate in your video, but it need a very snaggy
thing in the garage to snag it.

So yes, a design problem for the Norden 901.

That would be much simpler on Mastodon - though storage space hungry.

The loose battery connections I checked a while ago. Nothing wrong there.
The primary culprit is the exhaust valve servo motor allegedly. It's very difficult
to set it up correctly and once it starts giving readings outside the correct
set of values it confuses the ECU which starts generating a range of different
error conditions and messages.

Having said that, there are many theories with little backup or evidence.
Lots of people grabbing at straws.

Personally I think that it is the ECU software at fault. It doesn't catch
and deal with error and edge conditions correctly in all situations.

Same old same old I reckon. Poorly written and poorly tested software.

The badly adjusted of the old type won't be eye searingly white.
They'll be a bright old colour.

The LED modern stuff aren't badly adjusted (they're automatic now)
they're just too bright and the wrong colour - my problem is with them
and the automatic dippers (which don't).
