I get it just fine Felix. What *you* seem to miss is that regardless of
whatever's being discussed it *always* descends into the same old "we
hate Noddy" bullshit and it's *always* the same people who start it off.

Just like Jerky did here. He added *nothing* to this conversation other
than to use it as an excuse to go off on *another* repetitive "Noddy"
rant....

So that would be "No, there isn't any" then, just like I'd *already*
discovered which led me to pose my original question to Trev in the
first place :)

Congratulations Felix. This is yet *another* example of you proving
yourself to be less than smart.

you didn't just say 'thanks but no thanks', you coupled it with an
insult by saying I wouldn't deal with you. my reaction was perfectly
normal. EOD.

Of course it was. The morally vacuous narcissistic prick trying to take
the moral high ground is just laughable.

No you don't. It's an open public discussion forum. Nobody is seeking
your approval because it is not required. Suck it up loser.

No, in plain English it means what he says.

Wrong again Fraudster.
Not "people", 'person'. That'd be you. In the vernacular of the schoolyard,
'You started it'. That you are wholly unable to comprehend the simple
concept of Cause & Effect really does tattoo 'sociopath' on your broad and
sloping forehead.

**I may have one kicking around somewhere. I'll check over Easter. If I
can't locate one, then, given they were manufactured in the UK, then
that would be the best place to search for spare parts.

FWIW: The Garrard 3500 is a POS. Personally, I'd chuck it and get
something decent, but I understand the desire for some people to restore
them. You will need to clean out all the old, hardened grease, and
re-lube with fresh stuff. Remove the idler, clean and lube the spindle.
Clean the rubber surface of the idler. IPA is appropriate. Dedicated
rubber cleaner is better. Metho will do in a pinch. Check the motor. It
should spin freely. If not, dismantle, clean and re-lube the bearings.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, two companies dominated the turntable
market. BSR and Garrard. BSR made (in the UK) more turntables than every
Japanese turntable manufacturer, COMBINED! Back in the mid 1970s, I used
to repair the BSR turntables used by the company I worked for. Until I
visited the distributor. He was stunned that I was repairing them. His
words: "Hell, I can supply them to you for $24.00 + tax. Why bother
repairing them." I stopped repairing them.

Oh and one more thing: NEVER use those spindles for LPs that are
valuable. Auto turntables damage LPs.

For fuck's sake Felix, my *exact* response to you was:

There is no hatred there. No Insult. No nothing. Just me saying "no,
thank you" and that I'd rather not deal with people who think I'm a crook.

All you're doing now is trying to make yourself out to be some kind of

Thanks Trev. I appreciate it. If you manage to find one let me know here
and I'll organise purchasing it from you.

This unit has already been restored which is why I bought it.

I appreciate that this unit isn't at the high end of the used stereo
market, but it's more the novelty aspect of it at the moment than the
quality. If he develops an ear for vinyl and wants to take it further he
can get something decent down the track.

Lol :) Why would you? :)

Yeah, I'm aware of that. The bloke who sold me the unit said exactly the
same thing, and I can remember the effects of them from my own youth.

My kid has developed a love of all things 1960's and 70's, and is
particularly fascinated by old "cabinet style" stereograms. Especially
the auto loaders. This unit isn't one of those big old things as it's
just a turntable, but it's kinda cool, sounds great and has all the
"retro" features he'll like:

If I don't end up getting an auto spindle for it then it won't be the
end of the world as I'm aware that they're not good for the vinyl as you
say, and given that I've already given him my old albums which I haven't
played in years he won't want to be damaging them. But he'd get a kick
out of seeing the auto function in operation on his own machine even if
the novelty does wear off quickly.

Thanks for your help. I greatly appreciate it.

That's 100% correct Fraudster. But only if it does a 180 degree turn...

You're a class act really Felix, aren't you? Have a look at this
exchange above. Jerky "points out some facts" which have nothing
whatsoever to do with *anything* being discussed other than for it to be
another opportunity for him to exercise his Noddy hatred, and all *you*
can see in this is something that's "well done".

You really are pathetic, the pair of you. If these auto spindles were as
commonly available as you make them out to be you'd be rubbing my nose
in it by putting up a number of examples of where I could easily get
one, but as usual all we ever get from the likes of you fuckwits when
push comes to shove is a massive goalpost shift with intelligent and
highly supportive comments of "find it yourself".

You're an absolute *embarrassment*. You know how you stated yesterday
that "you think I'm stupid"? Well, this is a perfect example of *why*
people do. You've managed to do little here other than to make a
complete spectacle of yourself, and somehow that's *my* fault all
because I wasn't interested in taking you up on your offer.

You are *remarkably* fragile pal....

My wife wants a book from the USA, can't get it via normal postage for
the same reason but international couriers such as DHL will ship it but
the cost is insane, can't remember the exact numbers but shipping is
something like double the price of the book.
She had it sent to the address of a mates mother in LA but still no luck
getting it shipped here at a reasonable price.

It's certainly frustrating.

I ordered a new forward tilt bonnet mechanism for my F-100 a few months
ago which was something like 300 bucks US, and another hundred for
postage. Paid for it, got all the automated emails saying everything was
cool with an expected delivery date only for it to be cancelled the next
say with the seller saying USPS won't ship to Australia. He wasn't
interested in dealing with another shipping company, so I looked around
for one through someone else as there are many companies selling them.

I could find plenty who were happy to ship through international
couriers, but then the shipping price went from a hundred bucks to
nearly 400 bucks which makes it absolutely ridiculous :)

Just like this auto spindle I'm chasing. There's a few people in the US
selling them on ebay, but anyone who is willing to ship through a
courier is charging massive postage fees. 22 bucks for the spindle, and
almost a hundred to ship it.

You seem to enjoy stating the obvious, huh? :)

Trevor deals with high end audio equipment all the time and has an
extensive background in the business which is why I asked him in the
first place. He would know what he's talking about and I don't doubt his
opinion at all.

I didn't buy this thing because it was high end (or not). I bought it as
it fits the criteria of being an older "retro" styled stereo that works
okay and will fit the bill for a 15 year old's first introduction into
older vinyl records.

As I said to Trevor, if he gets heavily into vinyl he can get himself
something decent down the track.

Did he? Which had exactly *what* to do with anything being discussed here?

If you were standing in a bar having a conversation with someone and a
third person walks up at random talking about rubbish that has nothing
at all to do with what you were talking about, would you consider that
to be normal?

No, I wouldn't either :)

> and all you had to do was say 'thanks' to my

But I didn't want one from you Felix. I'm sorry that you're offended by
that, but you need to put your big boy undies on and appreciate that
just because you offer something to someone doesn't mean they're
obligated to take you up on it.

Seriously, you're being remarkably childish here....

> now you can knock yourself out trying to find one.

Shouldn't be too hard, should it? You reckon all I need to do is look on
ebay and I'll find one easily :)

> but save your fingers typing. your warped thinking,
> lies, distortions, and opinion are of no worth. (back to 'yosemite sam'

Before you go, just take stock here for a moment and see what's transpired.

You offered a spindle. Not for me, because you wouldn't do it for me,
but for my kid. You want to talk about insults, right? Apparently that
little side swipe of yours right there is fine, but me saying "no thank
you, I'd rather not deal with you but thanks anyway" is an affront that
you seem to be suffering a disproportionate amount of butt-hurt over and
are trying your level best to make me out to be a arsehole *just*
because I wasn't interested in what you were offering.

I'm tipping that no matter how much you look at this you won't see
anything other than yourself as a hard done by victim, and *this* is why
people think you're an idiot.

Just to chuck in my two cents worth you really should convince him
that automatic turntables aren't the way to go however cool they may
appear at this point in time. The majority of them were junk even in
their heyday and aside from the sound quality not being up to scratch
(pun intended) they can seriously affect the life of records.

If he only intends playing old (and well worn) records go for it but
otherwise best not encourage him down that path. If he ever gets
really keen he'll also be wanting a valve amplifier and a couple of
Quad electrostatic speakers as well unless he finally realises that
the base is shithouse (read absent).

FWIW I gave on vinyl with the first appearance of affordable CD
players but I'm aware there's still a lot of vinyl fans around and by
all accounts there's some excellent turntables still available in
today's market. If I were a vinyl fan buying records at today's
prices I'd also be looking to record them on tape via a decent
turntable for normal listening.

OTOH I can currently buy perfectly good CDs on ebay for next to bugger
all (even less in charity shops). Plus the fact that decent sound
equipment has never been more affordable :)

**OK. Makes sense. The turntable/s to look out for, with serious
retro-cred are old Dual turntables. 1214, 1216, 1218, 1219. The last two
digits indicate ascending levels of quality. Later models are: 1224,
1226, 1228, 1229 (the 1229Q was the ultimate variant and one I have
never seen). Same deal. A 1218 is superior quality to a 1226 for
instance, despite being older. Earlier models were 1015, 1016, 1019, etc
(those whacky Germans). My second turntable, purchased in 1972, for
$150.00, was a Dual 1218. In classic German tradition, it is likely to
still be operating perfectly (assuming it has been serviced) today.

The reasons:

* High quality, four pole (not cheap, shitty two pole) motors.
* Heavy, cast, dynamically balanced platters (not pressed steel,
unbalanced ones).
* Tone arms (in the 1218 and above) are very well designed and
constructed) are designed for magnetic cartridges.
* Spare parts are challenging to obtain, but available.
* The auto mechanism is very well resolved.

Another possibly is Elac. Rarer and not quite as well designed as the
Dual, the Elac units are exceptionally robust. Made in Germany too.

**OK. Interestingly, Rolls is one of the few (the only, AFAIK) that used
Dual turntables for some of their models. Dual turntables were
significantly more expensive that BSR and Garrard ones. However, with a
little dedication and some woodworking skills, you could 'hot-rod' that
stereo with some better components. Depends on how much effort you want
to commit. It would not be a hugely difficult job.

**NP. Like I said: Over Easter, I'll see what I can find.

You don't have private conversations in a open *public* forum. Anyone
can see them, anyone is free to comment at any time.

You have private conversations by *email*.

This is further evidence that you're not only a narcissistic sociopath
but stupid with it!

Very generous of him considering how *you* have treated him in the past.

<snip abusive arsehole playing the victim card>
