Evidently that is the case. You're inside his head. There is no way he
can say or hear your name without thinking of you now :-)

Yep, much more subdued in the bullshit claims department.

But he's had heaps in the past, all clangers. I still fondly recall his
bullshit when I used the term "effective compression ratio" in a
discussion way back. Darren really went to town on that! Called it
gobbledygook and theoretical bullshit. He was totally wrong of course.

Ever since mechanics began hotting up engines, compression ratios have
been hyped up to the max. The compression ratios quoted by most people
are the *static compression ratios* and these are *theoretical ratios*
that are purely computed. Static compression ratios are the mathematical
representation of the ratio of the cylinder volume compressed between
the piston at BDC and the piston at TDC. It is an easy ratio to
calculate because all the variables in the equation remain the same
(static) except for the position of the piston in the bore. The
*assumption* of the static compression ratio is that the intake valve
has no effect on compression ratios.

Here was Darren slamming my use of the term "effective compression
ratio" and definitively stating that static compression ratio was the
only one that mattered, all else being *gobbledygook*. How ironic that
he was backing a *theoretical value* against my real world value. Even
more ironic - he called me a *theory man* and claimed to be the one with
all the real world experience. Even Paul tried to set Darren right,
mentioning terms such as *dynamic compression ratios* and the Atkinson
cycle as used in the Prius where the inlet valve closing point is used
to vary the ratio of compression stroke versus power stroke.

The engine is anything but static and the valve event for the intake
cycle typically closes *after* BDC when the piston is on its way back up
the cylinder. Therefore, the idea of the static compression ratio
measuring from BDC to TDC is incorrect. Instead what we have is another
way of looking at compression ratio and we call that the dynamic
compression ratio. Because the inlet valve closes after BDC, the
effective overall volume of the cylinder has decreased because the
piston has risen in the bore with the valve still open. As the piston
rises it forces the air/fuel charge back out the still open inlet valve
up until the point at which it closes completely. The moment the intake
valve closes completely becomes the starting point for calculating the
*dynamic compression ratio*. It stands to reason then that the dynamic
compression ratio is always *less than* the static compression ratio
unless the cam is ground such that the intake valve opens and closes
precisely at TDC and BDC and I've never seen this in all my years in the
trade.

There's another aspect of compression ratios that tyros like Darren
don't seem to get. With the engine stationary, and the piston at the
bottom of the cylinder, the air *density* will be at 100%. Let's assume
the intake valve shuts when the piston is about 25% of the way up the
bore so there will be no compression until this point, any excess having
backpedalled out the open intake valve. The air in the cylinder is still
at 100% density. That means that we have lost 25% of the air in the
cylinder and lost 25% of the compression ratio compared to static.
Instead of, say, 10:1 (static), we are now down to 7.5:1 (dynamic). It
gets worse if the engine is actually running. We then need to take
volumetric efficiency into account. A typical production engine will
have a VE of 80%, maybe up to 85%. That's because, with only the small
differential of atmospheric pressure to force air in, intake tract
resistance will reduce the amount of air able to enter the cylinder.
That means that, in a running engine, the air charge will only be, say,
80% of atmospheric pressure - or 80% of the density. The *effective*
compression ratio is now down to 80% of the dynamic compression ratio.
Even then, the effective compression ratio is not linear across the
engine's RPM range. Typically it builds from a lower value, peaks at an
optimum RPM, then falls away from there. This can be seen in the torque
curve which tracks the VE curve. Where torque is greatest you have your
point of maximum VE.
Why did I move from dynamic compression ratio to *effective* compression
ratio? It's because I'm using a value that doesn't rely upon
measurements of physical dimensions and looks at *all the variables*
present in a running engine. A simple one - altitude - the higher you go
the less dense the air. That will reduce the *effective* compression
ratio. Intake tract temperature is another - as the air picks up heat
from the intake tract it becomes less dense. Restrictions in the intake
tract impede flow thereby reducing density. And there's the other side
of the equation - supercharging. It's obvious that if you pressurise the
air *before* it enters the cylinder, then that will increase the air
density *above atmospheric*. All of this renders the static compression
ratio useless for anything other than providing a *start point* and
here's a perfect example of that;

https://www.cars-data.com/en/toyota-prius/compression-ratio

Note the Prius has a compression ratio of 13:1, must be a really hot
engine, eh?

Not so fast! That is the *static compression ratio*. Actually, it is
more correctly termed an *expansion ratio* because it is unrelated to
the dynamic compression ratio. Atkinson cycle engines have a longer
power stroke than compression stroke (that valve timing). The intake
valves stay open for 30 degrees into the *physical* compression stroke.
That means the *dynamic compression ratio* is more like 8:1. A big
difference!

Here's a little info on the Atkinson cycle engine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkinson_cycle

In the late 20th century, the term "Atkinson cycle" began
to be used to describe a modified Otto-cycle engine—in
which the intake valve is held open longer than normal,
allowing a reverse flow of intake air into the intake
manifold. This "simulated" Atkinson cycle is most
notably used in the Toyota 1NZ-FXE engine from the early
Prius and the Toyota Dynamic Force engines.

The effective compression ratio is reduced—for the time
the air is escaping the cylinder freely rather than being
compressed—but the expansion ratio is unchanged (i.e.,
the compression ratio is smaller than the expansion ratio).
The goal of the modern Atkinson cycle is to make the
pressure in the combustion chamber at the end of the power
stroke equal to atmospheric pressure. When this occurs, all
available energy has been obtained from the combustion
process. For any given portion of air, the greater
expansion ratio converts more energy from heat to useful
mechanical energy—meaning the engine is more efficient.

So when Darren called my use of the term *effective compression ratio*
gobbledygook, I knew immediately that he had never attended TAFE as an
apprentice motor mechanic because the above is what an apprentice learns
in *second year engines*. I know because I spent rather a lot of my time
in TAFE teaching 2nd and 3rd year engines at Richmond. Definitely he
never was apprenticed as an AME(engines) because that apprenticeship is
at technician level and it's patently obvious that an apprenticeship
focused solely on (aircraft) engines is going to have a great deal more
depth than that for an automotive motor mechanic. An aircraft engines
apprentice mechanic would definitely know that static compression ratios
are meaningless in an environment where altitude plays havoc with
effective compression ratios. Hence the higher entry level into AME
apprenticeships. Darren was unqualified to even enter into any
apprenticeship at all and definitely not an AME apprenticeship because
he skipped the last few months of year 9 and those rather important
final exams.

Yes, Darren's chest puffing lies are, for the most part, gone but he is
still here, still badmouthing. It is gratifying to see his postcount
down to the nether regions of obscurity. 59 this month. ;-)

Yep, that plus the fact that there's been credible evidence produced which
disproves some of his claims. One could certainly argue that if anyone has
"driven away" posters then it'd be ex-Enablers who departed in
disenchantment because Fraudster was exposed as a massive fraud and an
enormous hypocrite to boot.

Hmmm. So you pair either have, 1) Dismal-to-poor comprehension, or; 2) are

Yep, I am reminded of the lying lawyer from Cairns, a huge supporter of
Darren - until he realised he had his money on a loser. I wonder if he
went to the trouble of checking Darren's bona fides at PROV? Those
records are available for public scrutiny. His departure from here was
rather sudden. Maybe he simply had an epiphany?

Keith is becoming just like Darren - asking, nay, demanding proof of

He certainly realised he backed a turkey before he departed so it's
entirely likely that he left out of sheer embarrassment rather than own
up to being wrong. His profession already rates rather poorly in the
integrity, honesty and trustworthy departments but when he deliberately
falsified information on a Wiki page in a failed attempt to set you up
to score a cheap point he did nothing to further the reputation of his
supposed 'profession' except to send it to rock bottom - where it found
good company with all the other team FLCJC members.

They have a lot of similarities including making unbelievably grandiose
but obviously bogus claims of achievement to prop up their ego complex.

They're total fucking whackjobs with zero grasp on reality.

I named by son Tom. It's a traditional name on my father's side for all
first born males, but I didn't care too much about that considering that
my mother saw fit to break that tradition with me. I named him after my
Dad who's name was Thomas. His father, my grandfather, was also named
Thomas. *His* father was named Thomas, and so on etc. Those males who
weren't first born got "Thomas" as part of their name, such as my
father's younger brother who was Norman Thomas Gibbens.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with this delusional self absorbed
fucktard. If I was the slightest bit bothered by the name "Thomas" I
would never have given it to my kid, and the fact that he genuinely
believes that from my perspective the name has any relevance to him at
all only serves to show just how utterly fucked up and completely
damaged this moron really is.

I use the name "Tom" every single day, and on every single one of those
occasions he is completely irrelevant when doing so :)
