This is the (frankly somewhat slipshod) cast I got at the fracture
clinic: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtbgbS_3FApLj8ppUXI0FDJvBDF1Qg
(click through any sign-up nags)

Yesterday they cut it off, wiggled my fingers, didn't bother with any
x-rays and gave me 2 pairs of "Mickey Mouse trousers". I shit you
not, that's what the doctor called them!
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtbgbS_3FApLj8pos80VOBKJBTF1EQ

He said he could put the hand in plaster for 4 weeks and the bones
would look perfect on an xray - but I wouldn't be able to move my
fingers when they took it off! Mobility is obviously essential, so
this is what they do nowadays.

I also asked about some continuing pain on the left of my chest, and
left of my back (by the scapula). Interestingly, the doc said xrays
typically miss 50% of broken ribs, and if one didn't show up on the
xray then by definition he wasn't worried about it. So I may well
have a broken rib too. It certainly hurts the couple of times I've
sneezed, but otherwise I've not got much to complain about.

Yeah, and it's been shown and is now well understood that puttnig some
stress on the broken bone can actually aid healing, by virtue of
increased blood flow and stuff.

Again, that's normal practice. Sometimes if there's no displacement
they might not even bother with an x-ray at all, on the basis that the
treatment of bruised or broken ribs is exactly the same.

When my tibia was bolted back together with the aid of an intramedullary
rod, the two ends of the break didn't meet up. After six months of not
being allowed to put any weight on it, it hadn't grown back. They then
removed the screws from the knee-end of the rod and told me to try and
walk on it with as much weight as I could manage (it hurt, lots) - this
caused the two ends of the break to nudge each other which in turn
stimulated the bone to grow and fill the gap before healing properly.

Unfortunately the six months of non-weight bearing led to another six
month of physio to regain strength and mobility of my knee and ankle.

Yeah, mine had two screws at each end initially.

After a few weeks (IIRC), they took out one at the knee end[0] that was
in a round hole, and left the one that was in a slot to allow movement.

[0] Local anaesthetic only. You know when a wood screw is *really* tight
and it squeaks as you turn it? It was just like that. Weird sensation.

Remember it well. Was quite concerned about removing all four screws when
I was conscious but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. I don't remember if they used a local
anaesthetic, I guess they must have. There was some blood.

Worst sensation was the removal of drain tubes after operations. I don't know how they
rammed 10 or 20cm of tubing in my hip but I felt every fucking mm.

I jokingly rolled up three papertowels, to "bite on".

Little did I know the nurse would forget to release the vacuum in the
drain bottle before attempting to remove the drain.

The ensuing towel-muffled screech drew a sister from a neighbouring
ward to identify the source.

When I slipped a disc a couple of years ago, being
catheterised was the only thing that made me forget the
back pain for a few moments. I seem to recall asking (well,
screaming) at the Doc whether he was actually going in dry.

Removal was uncomfortable and I did have a tinge of
disappointment too knowing I was going to have to get up to
go to the loo :)

It wasn't particularly unpleasant. Just ... weird.

Mind, getting the whole thing taken out was pretty odd, too. Had an
epidural for that, but I was still very aware of the vibrations from all
the chiselling and hammering.
