And here we goooo again!
Der Der Fraudster introduces *another* previously unheard of anecdote which
attempts to centre the topic back to himeself. Classic sociopathy.

And speaking of classic Der Der sociopathy... This thread is a classic
example of Der Der absolutely hating any instance of somebody knowing
something that he doesn't. Just about all the Der Der posts I've read are
attempts to prove that he knows eveything about the topic. It's just that
he never mentioned it before...

snip 'I believe you Fraudster. Honest.' tale.

Reliable and simple to fix, engine can be removed in 20mins.
Very easy and cheap to service and they didn't use a lot of fuel.
Also because they were so common there was lots of cheap bolt go faster
parts and there were simple fixes to some of their most common problems
such as straps to limit the droop of the rear axles which caused them to
roll over.
Something as simple as adding some weight to the front by throwing a
20kg bag of cement in the front improved front end grip significantly.
Most cars of that era had their faults and the Beetle certainly had its
fair share.

Yeah, that was pretty cool.

There used to be a VW specialist repairer in Alenandra Pde Collingwood
that my Mum's brother did his apprenticeship at and on the odd week-end
as a kid I would head over there and work a Saturday for some pocket
money. When I first saw engines pulled out of Kombi's to tune them I was
amazed and thought they were taking the piss, but after a few minutes of
trying to change a set of points or balance carbs on a tin carb motor if
became obvious why they did it.

In the end him and I could have an engine out in 10 minutes, and any
time I ever worked on a Kombi after that that's how I always did it.

The problem with the "go faster" parts is that all most of them ever did
was make the engine louder :)

It did indeed.

Innovative for it's day, but it's day was in 1940.

Hilariously, as is invariably the case with Der Der's errr... 'tales', I
recall him deciding that my anecdote about a parked Peugeot setting its
back seat a'smouldering was a lie. Isn't karma a bitch Der Der?

alvey
'I was there. It happened. Therefore it is a fact.' Der Der de Fraud, on

Any car 6v electrical system was pretty awful, at least it was easy
enough to update to a 12v system.
It was common on a lot of old cars to replace generators with
alternators, I've never done it on a Beetle but have done it a lot of
times on older British cars like Austin 1800 and Minis.
If you want to talk about dumb design its difficult to go past vacuum
operated windscreen wipers on early Falcons.

**Plant your foot in my old FC and the wipers stopped. Not a brillant
idea. However, the air filter in my FC was simply brilliant. VERY cheap

That was more a case of the inadequacies of 6 volt electrics which
affected everything that ran a 6 volt electrical system rather than any
particular short-coming with VW wiring. Generally VW build quality was
very solid, even if their designs were old hat.

If you wanted unreliable electrics you needed to look at British cars.
Positive Earth electrical systems with Lucas "Prince of Darkness"
components were about as unreliable as you could get without actually
trying to be :)

Same here.

And Holdens, and most other cars of the era. Foot flat on the throttle
and the wipers went on holiday. Still, not _quite_ as bad as the wipers
in my old Jeep. They were hand cranked. At least you only had to worry
about cranking the one on your side. The passenger sorted their own shit
out :)

The old "oil bath"?

They were okay, but they never filtered as well as the paper element
filters we have today.

Ahem, Darren, if the wipers go on a holiday, ie. they stop working under
acceleration, that's a clear indication that the vacuum pump isn't
working. You've obviously never worked on *fuel pumps* on those old
Holdens. Sadly, for you, *this sort of experience* can't be gleaned from
Google.

The image is of a vacuum pump, albeit upside down. The vacuum section is
depicted on top. In-situ, it is at the bottom and the fuel bowl on top.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/kkMAAOSwMZRhAOve/s-l400.jpg

You see, those old Holdens had a dual purpose fuel pump, one diaphragm
for fuel and another diaphragm at the opposite end for *vacuum*. While
the wipers won't be fast under acceleration, as long as the vacuum pump
is operational, they won't stop wiping. If they do, then the vacuum pump
part is no longer working. Could be a ruptured diaphragm, could be
knackered valves - easy enough to diagnose and differentiate.
Regardless, you would overhaul both sections of the pump.

So *that's* where you got your *extreme experience* at hand cranking.
You sure put that experience to good use cranking *other things*, didn't
you?

Yep, every single old Holden had one right up to, IIRC, FB. Electric
wipers appeared in the EK and you could retrofit them to the earlier
models since the mounting points were identical. My FB hadn't been
retrofitted. I think I did have to do a pump rebuild but I did so many
back in those days I can't be sure.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/MfYAAOSw94Ffc81A/s-l1600.jpg

Very simple units, just a flap that is pushed in an arc from one side to
the other and when it reaches the end it trips the valve to divert the
vacuum to the other side. Fairly reliable jiggers - just need to ensure
the vacuum pump remains working.

Cheap but not nearly as effective as a modern paper filter.

The father of a school friend designed an in dash record player, it
played 45s which, with the centre punched out, neatly stacked over the
gear lever.

I've seen similar things before. There literally was no end to the
amount of bizarre and wonderful accessories you could have.

The 1966 Futura coupe I sold last year had one of these:

Called the Ford Auto Portable 8 it was more commonly referred to as a
"Picnic Radio", and it got that name because it could be removed from
the dash with a key and taken along with you so you could listen to your
music in the park while enjoying your picnic. One of the first portable
transistor radios for cars around.

Just about any car all over the world.

Electric wiper motors never really became common until the early 1960's,
and while some cars had them before then most used vacuum motors to
power the wipers and used manifold vacuum as their supply source. They
would often supliment this vacuum supply with a little "back up" vacuum
pump that was part of the mechanical fuel pump that was supposed to
provide vacuum to the wiper motor when manifold vacuum was low, but
generally they were hopeless and didn't do anything as anyone who's
driven a car with vacuum powered wipers could tell you whenever you
floored the throttle.

Just when you needed them the most.............................

My Renault 16TS had a great idea, the wiper motors were in the heater
inlet box just in front of the windscreen, The box had a grill on top to
let the air (and rain) in and a small drain that was always getting
blocked to let the rain out. So every time it rained, the motors went
under water - great.
