Out to the EU is fine (unless you have a nipper between 12-16 and not
double jabbed). It's going back that's a PITA.

1) Leave the kids behind
2) Don't go back

IIRC, they are about £25 to make. (depending on which one)
Then there will be some add-on costs for retail.
Then the time taken to administer the test and produce any paperwork (or
whatever digital shit is called).

Hah. Not so in CH. PCR tests for travel were entirely self paid. And
Swiss prices, of course, so we ended up paying chf150 each for one
before our most recent trip, given that only one place, in Geneva, was
ablt to guarantee results in time for our flight (arriving on a
Tuesday evening, so a Saturday test would have expired, most centres
only guaranteeing a 48 hour service, and of course not open on
Sundays).

Valid reasons for a test, e.g. symptoms, high-risk group etc. needing
a scrip would have been covered by jealth ins.

At least the vaccines themselves were/are given entirely free.

For a lot of stuff yes.
But there are certain ones you don't get, because they are not an issue
here.
Rabies
Japanese Encephalitis

Some Hep ones (can't remember which).

All PCR tests are free, unless you want one for travel. Which makes
sense to me, why should I subsidise someone else's holiday?

Although it didn't stop Jude catching it a couple of weeks ago after
her first trip into the office in over a year. Symptoms on the mild
side, no lasting effect, vyt a few days off work and feeling like
shit. We have a good supply of home tests so I checked a couple of
times but clearly had had a better response to the vaccine. It did
scupper any ideas about trying to get over to the UK for my mum's
funeral though. (Was streamed online, so I didn't actually miss it).

My wife has just returned from a fortnight visit to Scotland. The
plan was that she would bring our daughter and two teenage
grand-daughters (14 and 16 years, latter with one recent vaccination)
back with her, but elder grand-daughter has just been diagnosed with
Long COVID and quite frankly is in no state to travel. We have no
idea when she caught COVID (presumably at school - they have all been
obsessively paranoid for eighteen months) but remain thankful that the
rest of the family is seemingly unaffected.

Anyway the requirement as far as we were aware was that both girls
needed official PCR tests prior to travel (daughter is double
vaccinated). Prices weren't properly researched as the COVID thing
raised its ugly head ahead of time, but as I recall £80 wasn't
completely out of the reckoning.

Not sure about any other airline but Ryanair offer the facility to
upload all the documentation, tests results and certificates before
travel, but taking paper copies is still highly recommended.

As you'll be only too aware, at the Spanish end it depends on whether
the border guard has had a good day or not as to what they require. My
wife got through OK, the couple in front of her had a very intense
argument, something to do with passports.

80 is not atypical for high street pharmacies. I think MO found a few a
little cheaper in that London but there is more competition I guess.

Pre-vaccinations when travel first opened up and PCR was mandatory for
everyone the demand raised prices to 150 or more.

Eh what?

Naah, her company have been very good about letting everybody continue
to work from home - that one visit was enirely voluntary for a team
meeting and dinner, first time some of the US and CH colleagues had
ever met in person. Everyone was vaccinated and/or tested as a
condition of attending, so it's extremely unlikely that it was within
the workplace that she caught it.

In any case, it has to be assumed that the vaccine did exactly what
it's claimed to do - in most cases it should stop any symptoms, in a
few it may not completely stop it but should significantly reduce the
severity and the chances of need for medical intervention.

I think Bruce and I are about the same age. My mum is still breathing at

All true stuff, but there are still those that get hit. Jean is
currently working with people in that unlucky category.

Mean while, SiL[1] has just tested positive and he has had the booster!

[1] Biomedic technician, and has worked right through, what with being
based in a lab and doing covid sample testing.....

Blimey, that long ago. The kettle burned dry. I'll get another one :-)

Yeah, she was 87. Had been completely out of it with dementia for the
last ten years or more, so in reality it's been 15 or so since she
went away.

I've had to get a PCR each time I have traveled to, and returned from,
Saudi Arabia.

The one-hour PCR test in Minnesota cost me (actually my employer) $250.
The 24 hour PCR test in S.A. cost about 115 SAR or roughly $30.

Airlines on both ends want to see the PCR test data and my CDC
vaccination card. Plus the Saudis have a website (Muqeem) where you
have to enter the dates and type of your vaccine doses. And they
insist that you have a tracking app (Tawakkalna) on your phone to
enter most buildings and even some outdoor public spaces.

But I didn't have to do any testing upon entry to S.A. unlike when
I travelled to the UK for TOG's funeral.

I would say the best source of information are the airline's own
websites. They have a vested interest in making sure you can fly
without too much hassle.

Tracking app. I've had CANotify for almost a year. It's never reported
any exposure, even when I've gone to the hospital for surgery. I wonder
if it depends on people installing that app and telling it when they're
infected. Which would decrease its usability tremendously.

All this talk of tracking apps. The conspiracy theorists might have a
point .....

The Saudis actually have a 2nd app that they recommend for contact
tracing (I don't know the name, offhand). The Tawakkalna app is
just for displaying your vaccination status (mine says "immune")
and to check you into locations. The other app is the one that
senses proximity to other peple who have installed that app, by
using Bluetooth.

Since I'm not required to have that 2nd app, I haven't installed it.
But they do look at the Tawakkalna app when you go into a store or
enter the airport, and if you don't have a smartphone, they won't
let you in.

Probably not much help, but we visited the UK this week for 3 days
(from Holland) via the tunnel. I needed to book a day 2 test for four
of us and I ended up on this site
https://covidtestingdirect.com/approved-day-2-day-8/.
A premium day 2 test is 89 quid (would have been more than the return
tunnel fare) or standard test 75p !!!!Get in I thought, until I tried
to book an appointment and the first available was Nov 9th. I booked
anyway, got the code, filled in the Passenger Locator Form(s) and
uploaded the whole caboodle to Eurotunnel. It worked. For the return we
just had to fill in a "engagement-sur-l-honneur-vert" and upload it to
Eurotunnel.Took hours and at the end I knew all four passport numbers
by heart.
On the return the French customs lady asked "are you vaccinated?" (yes)
"can you show me please?" at which point I showed her 4 phones with a
QR code and she was satisfied.
My conclusion? the rules are pretty complicated but loosely enforced.

Last October, a work colleague paid £250 for a travel PCR.
