While that may well have worked when Russia was being invaded,
it is less clear if it will work when Russia is doing the invading and

So far it seems that the other nuclear powers have been very restrained.
No public talk ratcheting up their nuclear readiness etc, no public
thinly disguised threats that if you stop me winning, I will blow up the
world etc.

A diplomatic approach is difficult when most diplomats have been
expelled. More difficult still when you are dealing with a man who can't
be relied on to honour his word, and has demonstrated that at every
opportunity when he offers to do something that might look like an
agreement to de-escalate, he will actually treat it as an opportunity to
push his agenda further while you are honouring your end of the deal.

"You want humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians, sure, ok we
agree", then come the time using it as an opportunity to directly target
and kill more civilians, and use the pause to regroup and re-arm their
forces. Or use the guide of providing humanitarian aid as a way of
getting lorries into contested areas so they can load up and take away
more bodies before the war crimes investigators can get a look at them.
