Saw it at $1.85 in North Lakes yesterday but the local Puma has it at
$1.44 with another 4c off if you are in RACQ.

I had a friend who died a few years back who's boast was that he had had
3 wives and 150 cars in his life. Knowing him, I believed it.

If you're talking about the Fraudster here then I agree with you. His
*claimed* ownership is a grim history of battered shitheaps, but with one
startling exception. "I bought a ZL (1987) model Fairlane in late '88 for a
tad over 30 grand...". So why is that "startling"? Well given that Der Der
was 24/25 then, had never held a decent paying job, *and* that $30k in 1988
was a shedload of money well, draw your own conclusion on the veracity of
this claim.

I've probably had that many cars, but only one wife. One is enough.

really? so let's do the maths. supposing you bought your first car at 18
(legal driving age), and since you're 54 (56?) now, you've had 36 'car
buying' years, which translates to one purchase every three months, in
round figures. hmmm....

Well, you can't believe the word of a narcissistic habitual liar ever,

Yes, Les's son.

It's an awesome looking beast.

It does look pretty good.
He bought it in Sydney, whoever did the work did a pretty good job of
making it look good but I don't think they ever intended to drive it all
that much.
The car was originally a 6cyl manual with drum brakes all round, I think
the fronts are now HQ discs but they used to get very hot, whoever did
the brake upgrade forgot or didn't know about the residual valve in the
master cylinder so the brakes were always dragging.
We found a few other things like that which are now sorted, the thermo
fans were always on when the engine was running and that created an odd
problem, switch the engine off and the fans kept spinning becoming
generators so the engine wouldn't shut down until the fans slowed down.
Fixed that by controlling the fans through the Holley EFI.

Reckon I might have to

LOL, the 383 he bought came with an engine dyno readout of 460HP, seems
about right:-)

It's a very cool looking car.

Yeah, some blokes are funny like that. Some would prefer to have them
sit around and be admired. I prefer to drive them.

I wonder if it's one of Clasener's old jobs?

Definitely sounds like Tafe teacher work :)

> Fixed that by controlling the fans through the Holley EFI.

One nice advantage.

The silly old ex-teacher who built the Effie zip tied a 16 inch fan
straight to the radiator core so only around 40% of it was getting
cooled when the fan was running, and to make it worse he hooked the fan
up to a switch partially hidden under the dash so the fan would *only*
come on when you flipped the switch manually.

Smart man, but then he got around the problems that could cause by
cutting the guts out of the thermostat so the engine never gets hotter
than around 60 degrees. No prizes for guessing why the thing is only
getting 8 miles per gallon :)

That's just short of a 300hp advantage over me. So tell him we'll race,
as long as he gives me the length of the Avenue heading towards Melton
as a head start. First one to the cemetary, and I reckon he'll *just*
pip me :)

383's are an awesome combination.

Agree, its a car not a museum piece.
There are a few exceptions but only if the car is extremely rare.
The bloke I know that owns the only Subaru powered F1 car in existence
is contemplating whether or not to try and get it running or to just
keep it as a museum piece, not that I get any say in it but my
preference is to get it running and maybe do a few demo laps before its
finally put of display, we even offered to work on it for free but so
far he hasn't taken up our offer:-)

I'm fucked if I know, but he was fucking incompetent I can tell you that
much. The thing is vastly improved, but it still needs more sorting. I'm
waiting on parts to arrive to do more. It currently gets 25l/100km
mostly due to it's horrendous rear end gearing of 3.92:1 which sees it
sit on just over 3000rpm on the freeway, but the fact that it's always
running fairly cold ensures that a lot of fuel is going into the sump
and a lot unburnt straight out the tailpipe.

Still, it's nowhere near as bad as it was when I first got the thing.
The way he had it "tuned" was appalling, and it was so bad that when I
drove it to St.Albans from my place to get it's Roadworthy done I left
here with a full tank and it ran out of fuel on the highway at Tabcorp
park on the way home.

That worked out to around 60 litres per 100km's. Not bad for a 272 cubic
in engine :)

Coincidentally, if a Dictorian deals with four or more cars in a year then
they need a Motor Traders Licence. The list of Motor Traders is publicly
available. There is no Darren Gibbens on it.

So, does the Fraudster have an explanation for his abscence? Or is it all
just another lie?

He reckons he used to drive it to play golf, but clearly the golf course
must have been just around the corner. He just had no idea what he was
doing. Everything on the engine was just taken out of it's box and
installed with no regard to adjustments or tuning. Wrong timing, wrong
temp settings, wrong plugs, wrong gaps, wrong carburetor, wrong everything.

I've never seen an engine running as rich as this was and still be able
to start.

Probably would have run better and used less fuel if it was dead stock.

I notice Les' son *isn't* getting *you* to do any work on it Darren. How
unsurprising since you cost his dad a motzsa on the Elise engine and
*lied* about the cause of that huge cock up.

For your information, since you never did an apprenticeship as a motor
mechanic, residual valves (also known as check valves) are covered in
the apprentice syllabus in level one - basic hydraulics - and level two
- servicing master cylinders - and level 3 - brake fault diagnosis.
For that matter, the residual valve is covered in the apprentice text
book on brakes - Guide To Hydraulic Brake Service, PBR Brake Group,
1981. I still have my 1981 reference copy. The basics are covered on
pages 8-9 and the servicing procedures are covered on pages 13, 19, 20 &
47. Anyone who actually completed an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic
in Victoria, and attended TAFE, knows all about residual line pressure
valves Darren. You act as if you've just discovered them. How unsurprising.

Jealousy's a curse! Besides, how would you know Darren? You never
qualified to even be signed up as an apprentice, ever. Not even that one
where you *lied* about being an aviation apprentice. The only TAFE
teachers you know are those who taught you in your hobby panel beating
course at Richmond - entry requirement: warm and vertical along with the
ability to pay the course fee.

More Darren bullshit snipped.

No doubt. I've only got a couple of minor things left to do to it when
the parts arrive and then it can stay like it is for a couple of years
until I pull it out and flog it off before swapping it with a Windsor.

Ahem, first point, engines need a very rich mixture when cold starting.
Typically this is about 9:1 but in extreme conditions it could be even
richer. For an engine to produce power, you need about 12:1,
acceleration about 11:1, warm cruise about 14.7:1 and deceleration about
17-18:1. Even an overly rich mixture will allow the engine to cold start
as long as flooding doesn't occur but an engine mixture that will allow
a cold start will not run when hot without bogging down.

A point to note here, road engines are designed to run fuel efficiently
when dead stock, that's a given. That includes stock tuning settings.
