Which I find a bit of a disappointment since for the past sixty-odd
years it's only been 10 years away.

A cynic like me would suggest that they will be bidding for funds soon (end
of financial year coming up)
It's surprising how often a cure for cancer is on the horizon at this time
of year.
I suggested this to some university researchers I know and, like 'Tom the
cabin boy', they just smiled and said nothing.

than that, however the big problem nobody seems to have solved yet is the
actual heat these generate is greater than any known material can stand.
I'm sure if it existed the Military would be using it already for
something! Brian

Yes there is a very large French Fusion power project which did, for some
infinitesimal part of a second generate more energy that it used to keep the
plasma in.
I think we are actually going to find out pretty fast why the Sun cannot be
boxed in. They say less waste, but the actual radiation environment, leaving
aside the temperature issue, can make materials actually change their
properties, so good luck.

They solved it by keeping the plasma in a magnetic bottle. That's what the

The real problem they have to solve is how to recover more energy from
the reaction than it takes to sustain the magnetic field.

The latest run recovered about a third of the energy they put in, which
is a step in the right direction, as their previous best was about half
that.

The best ever was an American reaction, which recovered 70% of what was
put in, but the reaction stopped after 4 nanoseconds.

That's all very well in theory but to make something like that work
you'd need a reactor about 333,000 times more massive than Earth and
you'd need to locate it of the order of 1 Astronomical Unit away from
any people.

Yep that's about right for a medium output version, there's a demo
model right ----> here, been ticking along just fine for over a hundred
petaseconds now. We have some smaller long duration models that should be
good for several exaseconds which you can get much nearer to.

Just one detail at that short a distance with a medium output unit
some supplemental magnetic shielding is recommended for radiation sensitive
lifeforms.

Already on it. At present it's providing about a third of my household
energy needs; from Spring to Autumn I have plenty of spare energy to

Dear Sir,

It has come to our attention that you have been drawing energy from our
experimental fusion generator without a licence, and have made no
payment for the power thus consumed.

Please regard this as an instruction to cease and desist.

A celestial invoice for energy consumed to date will follow shortly.
