If pricing can be varied every half hour, then there's potential for Economy 7 (or its inverse) on steroids. But obviously nobody's going to tout the downsides for the consumer while also trying to drive take-up of smart metering.

Our rate drops to 5p per Kwh between 12:30 and 4:30am, perfect for
topping up our plugin hybrid. The car has its own timer, so a normal
13A socket is fine.

Indeed. Back to the days when bytes mattered.

GPWM, must try harder. Sheer laziness on my part and CBA to decide how
much context is needed for those joining the discussion later.

Top posting on the other hand (in usenet at least) - burn the heretics!

Looking at Big Clive's stripdown, they seem to have been designed with
easy replacement of the smart and comms bit in mind:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G32NYQpvy8Q

Snip a seal, unscrew a screw, pull module out, put new module in, screw
in screw, crimp seal.

If the hardware on the comms part of the board is easily upgradeable to
4G/5G, the upgrade shouldn't be terribly expensive.

The article says "'The cost of sending someone out and messing around
with the existing equipment means that it is probably going to be
cheaper simply replacing the entire smart meter,' adds Hunn." but if the
meters are designed with easily replaced modular parts, like the one Big
Clive dissects, that's simply nonsense.

Australian ones look like they need more dismantling. Maybe the
(Chinese?) makers just hate the Aussies.

The least you could do is add some whitespace. And snip the occasional
blank quoted line...

This is interesting - I'd like to be able to know when to turn things
on and off based on spare electricity - dehumidifiers, shed heaters
that kind of thing.

Can you give a bit more detail - or point me in its direction?

I'm in the unexpected position where the utility company pays me more
for whatever I export than they charge me for what I use, even at peak
rates, so it's really of no use to try and time things like that. At
worst all I need to do is run as much as possible outside of peak
hours - which of course is outside of daylight hours when there's no
sun to help anyway. They must make enough profit from all the others
who have to use peak time power that they can afford to support my
miniscule generation efforts.

Otherwise you'd be exactly right: my data collection started witha
view to linking things up, including weather data. I hadn't reached
the point of automating things quite, but can see how frequent
readings could easily be used to trigger actions elsewhere.

I've just spent over a half hour composing a very detailed reply,
via Chrome Remote Desktop to my Lenovo laptop at home (don't ask)
which suddenly lost connectivity and garbled up the message.

I'll try to respond later- annoyingly, my colleagues keep coming into
the office and asking when I am going back out to the test floor...

I seem to have replied to the wrong thread in this post, and something
is happening when I paste into my terminal window that is screwing
up my text editor.

I'll try one more time...

In any case, after I get back to the compound, I'll try to post a
follow up with more complete info.

Software: rtlamr package from here: https://github.com/bemasher/rtlamr

H/W: RTL SDR plus antenna kit:

https://www.amazon.com/RTL-SDR-Blog-Multipurpose-Dipole-Antenna/dp/B075445JDF

The software install was a bit finicky for me since I had to install
some other pre-requisite package(s) which I don't recall at the moment.

It might make sense to dip your toes into the RTL SDR waters by
starting with rtl_433, which should be in the latest Linux distros,
and doesn't need much manual invtervention in the way of building
from source, etc.

Simply running rtl_433 with no other parameters with an RTL-SDR
dongle plugged in, should result in tons of messages from you and
your neighbors' RF devices, and the occasional TPMS sensor from cars
and trucks passing by.

I use this package to monitor temperature and humidity from a couple
of LaCrosse Technology weather station sensors, one inside and one
outside the house.

I also listen to my Toyota's TPMS sensors, so I can check up on
whether the tires need air. I can also monitor the tire temperatures.

Whoops - that is just the antenna kit which won't do much without the
USB dongle itself.

https://www.amazon.com/RTL-SDR-Blog-RTL2832U-Software-Defined/dp/B0129EBDS2

That's a fairly good quality one, with a TCXO for better frequency
stability. But for the purpose of decoding digital signals with a
fairly wide frequency span, even the cheap and cheerful clones like
this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/273512863339

work just fine. I see te price has gone up. Pre-pandemic you could
snag them for under $10 if you were willing to wait for it to be
shipped from China.

The antenna length should be matched to the wavelength you're trying
to receive, but I have no trouble picking up LOTS of devices with the
included whip antenna at 915 MHz, which is what my electric and water
meters (both Itron brand transmitter modules) transmit on.

That little whip antenna also works fine for receiving the 433 MHz
transmissons from my weather sensors, a bit less well for the 315 MHz
TPMS sensors on the Corolla. Sadly, there is no built-in decoder for
the TPMS sensors on my wife's Subaru Outback. I even brough the Pi
Zero W + dongle in the car with me, to see if I could pick up the
TPMS sensors, which do not transmit when the car is stationary. I
did see plenty of other cars' sensors as we drove along.

Another fun thing to listen/decode is ADSB transponders on
aircraft. There's an open source equivalent software (dump1090, I
think it is called) to flightradar that will show location, speed,
altitude and heading on a map, no internet connection needed. Just
the RTL-SDR dongle, an appropriate antenna for 1090 MHz, and some SW
to decode and plot the data.

Really cool to see Qatar Airways planes flying directly over my house.

I think part of the issue is that my newsreader *starts* at the bottom
of the post when replying. So I don;t really see all the rest of the guff.

This could also be why I sometimes miss stuff written higher up.

I suppose I could change it, see how I get on.

Were you going to mention that company doing the signature analysis
stuff? Clever.

I mentioned I was working on this before but didn't post a screenshot.
Took me a while to set it up and it was quite the learning curve, but it
kept me occupied for a while. Also expensive because it led me to go out
and buy a new fridge/freezer, and a fancy new induction hob.

Yeah, I had forgotten about them. Ran across their product after
seeing some decoded readings from one of their current consumption
monitors while I was setting up my rtlamr monitoring for the 1st
time. Now I don't remember the name, but they sell clamp on monitors
and a smart hub that can apparently tease out the consumption of
individual appliances through AI/ML.

<folds>

PS I had a similar experience after tracking the power consumption
of my old fridge using a Kill-A-Watt device. I'll probably recoup
the cost of the new fridge in electricity savings in 50 years or so.

Starting at the top enables you to work your way down snipping
irrelevant stuff as you go before putting your own witty comment at the
bottom

That was meant to be the other selling point for smart meters, or at least was when I was in a team bidding on part of the infrastructure. Changing suppliers was meant to reduce to a couple of weeks, and eventually drop to days or hours, with the smart metering system acting as more of a hub or marketplace.

I didn't, because when I checked the variable rate I was on was significantly cheaper than any fix available at the time. That should have tipped me off that something was coming, but it didn't. And then when wholesale prices had spiked, I was being quoted fixes that were triple what I'm currently paying, and 50% higher than the cap, which just seemed bonkers. Even now the variable rate I'm on is weirdly cheap considering wholesale prices have already skyrocketed. I'm sure it'll go up at some point, probably by a ludicrous amount, but there's not much I can do about it now. A shooting war in the land the gas pipeline goes through will help.

That is interesting - I have a spare RPi looking for something
unnecessary to do.

You may want to plug the dongle into a powered USB hub vs. directly into
the Pi, depending on how robust the Pi's power supply is.

I'm pretty sure I've driven one directly off a Zero Pi W, but only plug
it in while the power is off. Hot plugging the dongle is almost guaranteed
to cause a Pi Zero to reboot or crash, due to the surge current.

'Fridge payback was easy to calculate and was ~3 years. Can't remember
the term but the compressor in the new one has some kind or proportional
control which will no doubt fail after 2 years 11 months.

Inverter? We bought an LG on the strength of good experiences with our
LG dishwasher and LG clothes washer. I think the compressor is also a
"linear" design instead of a rotary vane type.

It's pretty quiet but probably not as quiet as some old school fridges,
that are virtually silent.
