It was O2's 'test bed' for a lot of their technology trials before Telefonica sold it to PE.

I think it was an early 4G installation, not so sure about when 5G was installed, but my
point was all the 'data plumbing' was probably done to allow voice calls to be handled
over the packet switched 4G/5G networks rather than relying on falling back to the
circuit switched 2G/3G networks.

It may be supported by all the 4/5G networks, but it isn't provided by
all the MVNOs - at least not Plusnet :

Some time ago, Tom Baker was BT's text-to-speech voice, which was
*perfect* for this sort of thing.

Before I had a smartphone I had Whatsapp on my PC using an Android
emulator. As has been said, I had to confirm that the number being used
belonged to me.

I'm pretty sure my desk phone here received SMS. It used to when I was
with Telefónica.

Both my Androids (Moto G and Xiaomi) have separate profiles - Guest Users
on the Moto and Second Space on the Xiaomi. Allows apps such as WhatsApp
to be active on one profile only with no access to any personal info on
the other - contacts, texts, photos, whatever.

The Xiaomi also pings a notification if the Second Space profile gets
notifications ('There are x notifications on your second space') so I
don't miss any WhatsApp pings.

I really didn't like WhatsApp's Ts&Cs so I'm happy it's locked away in its
own box.
