Wait until we reach the point where we start getting subtitles for
English, like American news services do for anyone speaking English
without an American accent....

Been there done that, I generally didn't have much problem talking to
yanks, but for some reason I always had difficulties asking for a diet
coke. I'd have to say "Diiiiet coooo-ek" then they'd say "Oh a diet
coke" weird.

Depends a lot on what part of the US they're from I think. I find "New
Yarkers" difficult at times.

One of the wife's long time Kiwi friends moved to the US to become a
teacher in the New York school system, and she married a local. Nice
guy. Puerto Rican family origins I think, but born and raised in New
York City.

On the couple of occasions that we've got together and had drinks his
wife had to act as the interpreter between us as he reckons I speak too
fast with a "twang" that makes no sense to his ears, and his accent to
me is quite harsh and I have to hear things a few times to get it.

Alcohol made it worse :)

Alcohol makes everything worse (or better) :)

I spent most of my time around New England, the accent is a bit like New
York, but not as harsh I didn't have a problem understanding them. I
worked with a lot of Israelis, some of them were more of a problem
especially my boss not only did she have a strong accent, but spoke very
softly too.

You can get it anywhere.

The wife and I did a random driving tour around the South Island of New
Zealand years ago in her oldie's borrowed 2 litre "export" Commodore,
and we were driving through Dunedin when we decided to stop at a KFC for
a bite to eat. I'm not much into fast food, but their chips are okay :)

Anyway, I dived in to grab some stuff and the young chick behind the
counter spoke with such a heavy Kiwi accent that I genuinely couldn't
understand a a word she said and had to go out and get the wife so she
could order instead.

She was very apologetic, saying "I'm sorry, but he's Australian" :)

What crap, New Yorkers have an *easy* accent to understand, unless they
come from the Bronx.

Your *brain*, or what you have that passes for one, is what made it worse.

I can understand why she would need to apologise for you every step of
the way but she didn't need to mention *Australian*, just the word
*moron* would have had you covered pretty well.

We need subtitles under your writings. That way we can see your *claims*
as you write them and the subtitles can give us the *reality*. For sure,
anything you write is as remote from reality as it's possible to get.

Otago and Southland settlers were mainly of Scots heritage. So you get the rolling 'R', the further south (from Dunedin) you go the more pronounced it becomes.
Not really typical *Kiwi accent*. ;)

Sure can, Les and his wife are from Newcastle in the UK, he has 3
brothers and when 2 of them came here for a visit I couldn't understand
a single word either of them said:-)
No problem understanding his parents so I suspect that the brothers were
putting on their accent on purpose.

Probably not, but it was extremely course. I don't recall having any
trouble with anyone else.

Well, apart from one Cuzzie Bro who wanted to rearrange my face because
I was walking around the Main Street of Timaru wearing a Wallabies jumper :)

Probably :)

I had a couple of friends who did a tour of the UK a few years ago, and
as the wife had Scottish parents she had no trouble with Scottish
accents until they went to Scotland. They caught up with a bunch of
relo's and reckoned they had a hard time understanding some of them.

The Scotts also reckoned the Aussies were from a different planet. They
were over there for their end of Spring/start of Summer and they
struggled with the weather. She showed me a photo of the two of them
posing with a large group of relo's and friends and it wasn't hard to
spot the antipodes. It was apparently something like 17 degrees and
there were a bunch of Scotsmen wearing kilts and singlets, and to the
left of the group were two people dressed up like they were going to the
snow :)

Nothing astonishes Noddy so much as common sense and plain dealing.

LOL, when we arrived in the UK in July 2014 it was 29deg C at 6.00am at
Heathrowe, the locals were complaining about the heat and weren't amused
when we said it was a nice warm day:-)
The heat is different over there though, temp doesn't vary like it does
here, here it generally cools down at night but in the UK especially
London if its warm/hot it stays that way all day and night and hardly
any older buildings have AC.
Even I was complaining about trying to sleep in a non AC hotel room when
its 29deg C.

Since when do you walk into a KFC and have a conversation so heavy that
you can't make it out. They are there to take *your* order and how hard
is it to say "chups" FFS :-)

We went to 12 different countries in Europe and never had any trouble
ordering anything yet he goes to NZ and he has to get his Mrs. to speak
English. What a load of fucking crap :-)

Maybe the *real issue* is that they couldn't make head or tale of the
*limited English* interspersed amongst all the swear words. Darren's
command of the English language, as he has oft demonstrated, is severely
limited.
