I would change that "most" with "many". All the laptops I have purchased
recently for other people have that port.

Just as an aside about POE's, since every radio I buy comes with one
<https://i.postimg.cc/XJChDCPr/spare-access-points.jpg> My home Wi-Fi APs

I love that the voltage range of _equipment_ designed to be powered by POEs
is almost anything between as low as 9 to 12VDC and, oh, somewhere around 24
and even higher I think (offhand).

I'd change it further to "some" as the medium & high end laptops still have
the RJ45 port in my experience (but the ultra-thin cheapies may not).

Not just cameras. POE to outdoor Wi-Fi Access Points is widely used.
Since only two out of four pairs are used for the data signals, the
other two pairs are used for power.

As another poster pointed out, for Gigabit Ethernet, where all four
pairs are used for data, you can send power over the data lines.

Sure... ...you could if it supports an ethernet adapter.

It might even be faster.

But is it really worth it if you have decent WiFi?

Perhaps, if you're paying for gigabit broadband.

I have 600Mb/s Comcast broadband. My speeds on a phone are about the
same with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, around 500 Mb/s.

Rarely.

Not everybody gets decent WiFi on the phone. I often get about
2Mbyte/second.

Sit next to the router.

Made just a test for the sake of it:

Even through a steel concrete floor and 12m distance I get down 49
Mbit/s and up 30 Mbit/s with Wifi 6.

2m from the route I get 150-200 Mbit/s up and down.

maybe he has a very old 802.11b router, except even those are faster
than 2mb/s.

The question got into POE, which I use in one place in my house, and other
things that I am not sure applied to my original question. I do have an
ethernet adaptor and can connect my phone. I can make phone calls etc. I
try to avoid wireless in my house and have the wireless disabled on the
router. The house is hard wired but my brother in law wants to use his ipad
so I turn on wireless and let him have guest access. I also have a landline
with phones I can carry around so I do not need to use the cell phone in the
house. What I am trying to figure is why it appears the phone has not
updated to Android 12 and I thought maybe if connected through ethernet that
might happen. It is always interesting how questions evolve.

Does the A12 even have an update to Android 12? In my experience you're
lucky to get even one Android update on the A series devices. On the S
series you'll get one or two Android updates.

I searched for Android 12 on the A12 and apparently Samsung promised it
in July 2022, see
<https://www.androidupdatetracker.com/p/samsung-galaxy-a12>.

why? use a strong passphrase and the likelihood of someone cracking it
are *extremely* low.

it may not be available for your phone.

Maybe that, and that not everybody has a high end and new phone.

Router said "20/40 M bandwidth", which means precisely 2 mega bytes per
second.

The router is often whatever the ISP provides, and not everybody changes
(or can change) it, so at some point they can be ten year old.

Oh, the router where I did that test was in a building where there are
dozens more WiFi points (so a lot of interference), and got replaced
this summer with a state of the art, ISP provided router, when changing
ISP. Things got faster, but not that fast. Didn't measure it, though. In
another ten years the router will again be old and obsolete, yet ISP
will refuse to change it.

The only Wi-Fi that would be that slow is legacy 802.11 which I suspect
very few people are still using. At a minimum, people are using 802.11b
which is 11Mb/s. Even 802.11b is probably not that common anymore, but
11Mb/s is fast enough for a phone anyway. If the Wi-Fi is that slow then
it's probably the broadband connection that is the culprit.

Does the ISP's router have Ethernet ports in the back of it?

At the risk of stating the obvious, this Bill Bradshaw is just another micky
troll who asks an inane question he found randomly on the Internet, and then
he starts creating artificial idiotic barrier after barrier after barrier.

First it's the Ethernet. Then it's the Wi-Fi. Now it's the Android version.
None of which have anything to do with the original stated problem set.

This Bill Bradshaw micky troll sucked us in (for his amusement alone).

Someone tell me how the version of Android can possibly be related to the
OP's stated problem set when almost nothing is added in any Android release.

The version of Android is _already_ nearly meaningless in that it's only a
rather small (and getting smaller) portion of what gets updated on Android.
*Why I believe the Android version doesn't matter as much as some people (aka iKooks) think it does*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/gzG52aKOloA>

Even so, almost everything (if not everything) useful in any Android update
is usually available to the older Androids via add-on apps, for example:
*Privacy Dashboard* by Rushikesh Kamewar
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rk.android.app.privacydashboard>

Name one thing the OP needs in Android 11 that isn't already in Android 11.

The OP is clearly a micky troll (trolling for amusement), but even so, what
on earth does the Android version have to do with the Ethernet question?

Name one thing the OP needs in Android 12 that isn't already in Android 11.

that's a theoretical maximum. real world speeds for 802.11b is about
half, or ~5mbyte/s, however, devices of that era did not normally reach
those speeds.

no it very definitely isn't fast enough.

could be, but not always.

Yep.

If you are going to say that I could connect an AP to it, yes, certainly
I could. That's an expense I did not want.

I actually connected another router, which had belonged to another
previous ISP, flashed with open router software, and repurposed as AP.
It had better reach to the end of the house, but at the same speed.

Today the house has a new router that supposedly does 300 mbps. But my
phone doesn't. One of my laptops did notice the improvement.

You read my mind! :-->

My modem is from the ISP but it has ports that I tie the router to.
I don't touch the modem but every few years I buy a new (faster) router.
