My router downstairs is 802.11n/EWC (it says), and is set to 20Mhz/40Mhz
mixed mode bandwidth. 802.11n Rate is set to "auto".

Oh, I forgot: broadband connection was 200, I think. I don't remember
the exact figure, it has varied over the years. Currently it is 100 at
that place, and 300 at my current place.

This absolutely substandard.
And we are discussing Mbit/s not MB/s.

802.11n should be able to go much, much faster than 2MByte/s, but the
practical speeds and the theoretical speeds for a given device depends
on a lot of factors.

If you're interested, see

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n-2009#Data_rates>

and the rest of that page for the nitty-gritty details.

Anyway, in cases like this, I've used:

'WifiInfoView v2.75'
<http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html>
on Windows.

Gives a 'Maximum Speed' column. (144 MBps for my 802.11b/g/n
(2.4GHz-only) laptop.)

and

'Wifi Collector'
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nirsoft.wificollector>
and
'Phone Information'
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andInfo>
on Android.

I do not remember what exactly 'Wifi Collector' reports (app is no
longer on my phone), but 'Phone Information' at least reports the
current 'Link speed' in Mbps. (Mostly 150 Mbps for my Samsung Galaxy A51
phone.)

HTH.

I tried the first one, doesn't say link speed.

Yes, indeed strange.

For me the Google Play website says

"(i) This app is available for all your devices"

and lists my devices, including an old Android 5.0.2 one, but when I
click on the 'Install' button, it says

"This item isn't available in your country."

So probably this app was geo-fenced after I installed it.

Anyway, if you want it, you can get it from APK sites such as
APKPure.com:

'Phone Information'

Sure, but it will not work, the app is not compatible with my hardware.
That's what it means the google play message above.

Do you *know* it *does* not work or do you *think* it *might* not
work?

The Google Play website and the Play Store app often mumble things
like that, while the apps work perfectly fine.

This app's Google Play webpage says "Requires Android 4.4 and up", so
a very wide range of Android versions and works fine on my Android 5.1.1
Huawei Y560-L02 and Android 11 Samsung Galaxy A51 phones.

To be purposefully helpful for the team, I tried to get the app also:

Well, if google play webpage says "This app is not available for any of
your devices", and the google play app in the phone is unable to find
the app or the developer, that's final to me and I'm not going to
download and install from outside.

Do you get a referral to the APK on the Google Play Store app when you first
go to the developer's web site on your phone web browser & press "download"?
<https://inpocketsoftware.com/android-phone-information/>

I don't have a Google Account set up so I can't test it fully for you.

What happens when you press that green "Open in Play Store app" button?

This site has at the end a link for google play, which opens:

<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andInfo>

which displays everything, but instead of install link it has a notice:

x This app is not available for any of your devices

Add to wishlist.

The page doesn't mention a number of downloads as would normally say.
Also, the last comment is dated March 22, 2021. And if you search for an
application named "Phone Information" it is not found. And if you click
on the developer, it says "not found".

All that indicates to me that the app has been blocked or banned for
some unknown reason.

There is another app by the same name (and very similar logo), though:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.salapp.phoneinfo

with only 100000 installs, last update 2017, so abandoned.
The comments say it has a lot of adverts.

Thanks Carlos for testing that link for the team as I couldn't go any
further given I don't have a Google Account set up on my phone (so I
couldn't access the APK in the real Google Play Store app on my phone).

For the record, here are my screenshots, where I even spoofed my location to
Asia and my VPN to Asia and my phone to a Pixel 3A with an older OS, etc.
<https://i.postimg.cc/15H889vH/spoofapk01.jpg> Spoof gps, phone, osversion
<https://i.postimg.cc/CKZ5rbSP/spoofapk02.jpg> "Get it on Google Play" URL
<https://i.postimg.cc/GpZ2W9pc/spoofapk03.jpg> "Open in another app" URI

I'm gonna concur with you and Frank that "something" funny is going on with
that app, which I haven't seen being done before, where it shows up in a web
page on Google Play, but none of us can download it off of Google Play.

Weird. Probably a few years from now we'll read about why that happens, as
it's normal for an app to disappear altogether but not to be half there (in
the Google Play web page) but half not there (you can't actually get it).

> There is another app by the same name (and very similar logo)...

It's interesting you said that as a lot of apps blossum after one good app
posts its source code (via the FOSS mechanism), where the trick is in
finding the original FOSS app that everyone copied & then added ads to.

I must admit I didn't even look at what _functionality_ you and Frank were
seeking where Andy and I have already found pretty good apps that tell you a
lot about the phone and the connection information that are FOSS.

If someone lists what specifically they were looking for, I can see if I
already have a FOSS app that does that they're seeking, as that app didn't
seem to me to be anything special in terms of what functionality it claimed.

Strange! For me the webpage *does* list the number of downloads
(actually the number of "Installs' (500,000+)) and the (Developer ->)
'Visit website' link works normally, it contains:

http://inpocketsoftware.com/android-phone-information

No idea why it's different for you (in Spain) and for me (in The
Netherlands).

N.B. The link on the Google Play webpage is

http://inpocketsoftware.com/android-phone-information/

but if you click on it, it goes (redirects?) to

https://inpocketsoftware.com/android-phone-information/

(N.B. I intentionally did not delimit ('<' and '>') the URLs, but just
did a copy-and-paste.)

Note the 'http' versus 'https' difference. Does your browser perhaps
refuse to go to 'http' URLs?

No; it is a server feature, when you go to the http link it redirects
instantly to the link https instead.

Yeah, I know that, but you wrote:

So why does the link work for me, but not for you? My guess is that
maybe your browser just refuses when it gets a 'http' URL and gives a
"not found".

Do you get the same link? Or no link? Or what else causes the "not
found"?

Frank Slootweg wrote:

While the app doesn't seem to do anything special, it is weird that the
app shows up in a web browser but not in my FOSS Google Play Store client.

Just to be clear about _my_ tests, where I used different URLs & browsers:
<https://i.postimg.cc/CKZ5rbSP/spoofapk02.jpg> "Get it on Google Play" URL
<https://i.postimg.cc/GpZ2W9pc/spoofapk03.jpg> "Open in another app" URI
Note that test above used three different web browsers & two different URIs.

The URI links appear to work as they redirect me directly to the Google Play
Store app, but I can't test further since I don't use a Google Account.

See this thread for further details:
*Can you get this "Phone Info" APK off Google Play Store <com.inpocketsoftware.andInfo>*
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.android/c/rsW_8C3Trts>

Nobody bothered to test it (yet anyway) so it tells me I'm likely mostly
wasting my time trying to help Carlos as nobody else stepped up to the plate
to help Carlos out but Frank, Carlos (who did run the tests), and me.

All the tested links have a "get" button (of various kinds), and all
redirect me to the Google Play Store app, but I can't log into that app
(for reasons specific to my device only).

However, the web pages each call a URI to the Google Play Store App
redirect, which "should" work for others I would think/hope.
<https://inpocketsoftware.com/android-phone-information/>
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=inPocket+Software>
Each results in a URI fed to the Google Play Store app of the following:
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andInfo>
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andsignal>
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andTest>

At the time I was GPS spoofed to Asia with concomitant Asian VPN
and I spoofed an older Android version & an older Pixel 3A phone.

Also remember that sideloading is easy on Android. You can easily
generate an apk file for any Play Store App.

On your computer:
1. Find the app on the Google Play store. Copy the URL.
2. Go to <https://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/>
3. Paste the URL into the box and click on "Generate Download Link"
4.Copy the APK that is generated over to the device and install it,
and hope that the app works on your device.

I've used this when I know a device supports an app but the author won't
let it be installed on certain devices for whatever reason. For example,
I have a Samsung Galaxy A51 which I knew supported Samsung Pay with MST
but for some reason Samsung didn't include the app on the phone and
doesn't allow it to be installed from the Play Store directly onto the
A51. But it works fine once you sideload it.

Carlos and Frank, get it while you can (for the other thread).
Thanks Steve.

I knew about evozi but I didn't think it would pull things off of Google
Play that Google Play doesn't have, and I'm not sure it actually does do that.

I don't know what it really did.
Is this _exactly_ the same file that is on Google Play?
I suspect it's a copy.

But then why can't we get it off of Google Play?
Dunno.

What matters, of course, is how much of a copy is this copy?
Dunno that either as I have nothing to compare it to.

Anyway, I'll test them out for the team (thanks to Frank, Carlos, & Steve).
Let me know if these links work for you as I just did them moments ago.

The importance is that automatic updates stop.

It doesn't matter if they are the same android, the problem is that
automatic updates stop, and at some point, applications stop working as
well, forcing people to buy new hardware want it or not.

Yes, I know you do not use automatic updates, but most people do use the
Android login and automatic updates. Billions of people.

For example, my phone was bought on 2018 and has Android 9, and Android
Auto has stopping connecting to the car hardware. The only apparent
solution is to buy a new phone, which is a pain because the phone is
otherwise working perfectly and the battery is fine. But no updates
except to apps.

By the way, there is a phone designed to be repaired, and which gets 2
Android updates, 5 year warranty. Expensive (~600€), and not feature rich.

When you say that, it either means you're vastly simplifying things or that
you're vastly misunderstanding things - both of which are wrong if you want
make any rational sensible assessments.

The question is why would the Android release matter to the OP's problem?
How Android updates won't matter if _all_ have the software the OP needs.

You are correct that this happens all the time with iOS but not Android.
With Android, almost everything updates forever in terms of functionality.

With iOS, updates just stop. At that point with iOS, you're just dead.
You can't even update Safari.

If you don't understand what I said above, it simply means you do not yet
understand _how_ iOS updates vastly differ from Android updates.

In fact, iOS updates differ from _all_ other operating systems (even MacOS).
Even Windows allows almost all functionality on almost all Windows releases.

But not iOS.

Again you are either vastly simplifying the problem set or you don't
understand it. There's the concept of Android layers which you need.

There are about a score or more of Android layers, which we've covered.
Each updates on a different level in terms of automation & stated EOL.

The essence is that most Android functionality updates forever.
Just like with all other common consumer operating systems except iOS.

Only iOS drops dead on you.
The rest have plenty of updates that last forever (see note 1).

Just as with all common consumer operating systems, any one developer can
choose to drop updates for any given Android release but that just means
that developer is either crappy or they don't care about your release.

It happens on _all_ operating systems so it's not related to Android.
If you chose better apps, such as open source apps, the likelihood of that
happening might be drastically lessened, but even open source apps can drop
support for older operating systems.

It's not an Android specific problem you have.
You simply chose a bad app that isn't continually supported by the
developer.

While I don't use Android Auto, I see the developer is Google.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.projection.gearhead>

I haven't ever seen yet any decent Google app which doesn't have a better
replacement (e.g., YouTube ==> NewPipe), so why not look for a similar app
(perhaps even Open Source) that does what you need with Android Auto?

It's expensive likely because it _is_ feature rich, at least based on that
Wikipedia which says it has "5G connectivity, dual 48MP cameras with optical
image stabilization, an IP54 rating and MIL810G drop test certification."

Those are high end features, aren't they?

This is an interesting observation in that Wikipedia article.
"According to the company, increasing the lifespan
of a phone by two years reduces CO2 emissions by 30%.[1]"

Sounds like a good idea. I didn't know about it prior.
Thank you for edifying me about the goal of the "Fairer" phone:

The cell phones you can disassemble and repair yourself
Francesca Schweiger, Business journalist, Berlin, 9 March 2022

Urs Lesse helps people repair their phones.

Urs Lesse's expertise is in the field of political science, but he also has
more practical interests.

Every four weeks he spends his time helping people fix their phones in his
hometown of Aachen in western Germany.

But he can't help with just any brand of phone, only with a so-called
Fairphone.

For the past eight years, Lesse has been an active member of an unpaid
skill-sharing network of Fairphone users. He organizes local community
meetings and helps with repairs.

"I don't repair phones if I don't have to, but I've always been very
motivated to encourage people to try to fix their own Fairphones
themselves," he says.

"We're missing out on real life": people deciding to get rid of their
smartphone. "It's always been a question of passing information and taking
away people's inhibition to dare and open their phones," he explains.

With a modular design, Fairphone devices allow owners to easily swap, repair
and customize components such as the screen, battery, USB ports and cameras.

Fairphones are designed to be easily disassembled and repaired.

"The Fairphone 2 can be disassembled in less than two minutes," says Lesse.
"There were models where you didn't even need tools to remove the screen and
replace it yourself."

Recyclable, durable and repairable
Fairphone's customers range from programmers who have been attracted to the
possibilities of phone software to consumers looking for a more sustainable
product.

The company started in 2013 and follows four principles: source raw
materials from non-conflict mining areas and manufacture products that are
recyclable, durable and repairable.

According to United Nations figures, a record 53.6 million tons of e-waste
were generated worldwide in 2019, 21% more than five years ago, with cell
phones making up a significant portion of this. In addition, only 17% of
e-waste was recycled.

Fairphone argues that by making phones easy to repair, they can have a
longer lifespan, generate less waste and therefore have a positive impact on
the environment.

Only 17% of e-waste was recycled in 2019, according to UN figures.

"We know that by increasing the lifespan of a phone by at least two years,
you get a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions," says Fairphone co-founder Miquel
Ballester.

Niche product
So far, the company - of Dutch origin - has sold about 400,000 devices,
which means it is a very small player in the smartphone market.

"Fairphone is still a niche product, which you can't find in many stores,
which is why the community network is important," says Lesse.

Nevertheless, Fairphone has made an impact within the industry, particularly
in Germany, where it has gained significant support.

Germany awarded numerous certifications and prizes to Fairphone, most
notably the 2016 German Environmental Award, the highest paid environmental
award in Europe.

Ballester believes this government recognition, as opposed to industry
recommendations, is one of the reasons Fairphone gained such a strong
following in Germany compared to other European markets.

Fairphone became popular in Germany after winning awards.

Germans tend to be less attached to the status of large companies and are
therefore more inclined to try smaller European brands, says the company.

The "developer"⁽¹⁾ points to these two links:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=inPocket+Software
https://play.google.com/store/apps/category/TOOLS

The first one says:

We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server.

and the second provides a long list of "tools" apps.

(1) at page
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inpocketsoftware.andInfo>,
just below the text "Phone Information" big letters, which says:

inPocket Software Tools
PEGI 3

There is no "http" anywhere, all are google pages.
