I'm going for lunch some place tomorrow, and to someone else next month,
and I have two Android phones full of pictures. Both have wanted to see
my pictures in the past.

Is there any clever way with a cable to connect an Android phone to
their PC and show them like a slidewhow. I mean software. (It will
make the picture bigger so all can see at once.)

Especially if it's already in the PC. One of them won't want to install
more software.

Enable usb file sharing on the Android device. Then plug it into the
Windpws device. You whould see it as a device in Fo;e Explorer. Double
click on it and you should see one or two drives, depending on wheter
your Android device has an externaal card or not. Then it should just act
like any other drive. You should be able to open the images by the normal
Windows softeate.

USB stick with the pictures on it ?

Plug stick into their smart TV set ?

Or, use their PC, with a portable viewer application.

cd /d F:
..\ffplay.exe picture01.jpg
..\ffplay.exe picture02.jpg # The .\ is necessary with Powershell commands, not with Command Prompt

The stick F: would have contents such as

ffplay.exe
picture01.jpg
picture02.jpg

You could add a

playme.bat

to the USB stick, if the .bat is suitably crafted.

*******

These are likely to work on a Win10/Win11 machine and
the package includes statically compiled (no DLL hell)
versions of ffmpeg.exe , ffprobe.exe , ffplay.exe .
This means I just drop the three executables into my
working directory and use them. No registry settings.
No Add/Remove entry.

https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/packages/ffmpeg-5.1.2-full_build.7z

There are instructions on the web for adding additional parameters
to the command, for offset or scaling, that sort of thing.

https://ffmpeg.org/ffplay.html

ffplay -fs picture02.jpg # full screen, press <esc> to close

There's all manner of "clever" ways, screen caasting, screen mirroring, wireless
disply, projecting ... but in general the names and methods change too often, if
it was something I'd want to do frequently between and phone and a laptop I both
owned, I might have a go, but for a one-off connection, I'd say enjoy the time
spent with your friends, rather than getting frustrated with the technolgoy ...

Using your Android charging cable plug it into your PC
On the Cell phone a popup might occur, select File Transfer (the default
is Charging)
Look for a directory DCIM and then Camera and you should see all the
pictures you have taken with your Cell Phone.

Or using Chrome browser log on to your account and next to your picture
on the right click on the dotted square and select Photos and all your
photos should appear.

Try this at home first!

I've done thta in the past, but then I get new pictures and don't always
copy them to a USB stick. The PC and the backup drive come first.

More importantly maybe is that I am very likely to have my phone with
me, but not a flashdrive even if one has been made. I usually don't
know in advance who will want to see the pictures.

This would work well, next time I have a full usb stick.

They have actively wanted to see my pictures in the past, and I go over
4 or 5 times a year, but usually they have other company who is not so
interested. Today it will be just me.

You're right. I havent' posted my reply to Majorlangod yet, but with
the first phone there was indeed a popup. With the second, which had
most of the pictures, t here wasn't. It turned out USB debugging was
just set on.

For sure. It worked well on the newer phone, but when I tried the older
one, the battery was at 0%. I've left that phone alone for weeks or
months before and it's never gone that low. I wonder if I left the
phone on. ;-( So that took all night to charge.

And then the phone didn't show up in the file list. Either I was
looking for a drive, not just a directory, or maybe I had to turn it off
and on again to get the phone to show up on Fie Explorer.

And then the array of commands in the slideshow right mouse key was much
smaller, didn't have next or previous, even though I was using the same
computer, tthe same File Explorer, the same viewer!! Only the phone was
different. Ah, but the left, right, and space keys still worked, only
the menu was different. Go figure. OTOH, the left mouse key, which
I hoped would enlaarge the picture, like it did on the other phone, set
me back 50 pictures to where I started, and it was hard to start the
slide show again.

And it doesn't always seem to go in date/time order, and seems to
restart the sequence for no apparent reason, and not always even at the
same spot! (But I can start over from a picture further down. )

Deapite all these problems, I like a system that only requires the phone
and a charging cable. I keep two charging cables in my car and one in
my suitcase.

Wow. Thanks a lot. This worked great. It's amazing what you can learn
if you ask. I used "Transfer photos". Despite the convoluted story and
all the complaints that follow, I'm happy with it.

Then I tried to use File Explorer and I didn't follow one part of the
instructions and it didn't work!! One web page said "to easily start a
slideshow of all images in a folder, open the folder that contains the
images you want, and then select the first picture***** from the folder.
A new yellow section called Picture Tools will appear in the Ribbon
above the Manage tab; click on it."

*****It's amazing how having to properly pose the question here often
lets me see the answer. I had had the Picture Tools tab show up once,
but it disappeared and I coudln't get it back again. Doing what the
instructions said made it work much better.

But still the first time I clicked on Side Show in the ribbon it didn't
do anything. For future readers, I had to click on a .jpg file and then
on F%, or the ... at the top of the viewer and then on Slide Show, and
then it started. One could pick the right picture to start with by the
date embedded in the file name.

But the second instance, maybe because I wasn't using the phone as
input, just clicking on Slideshow opened the viewer window and started
the slide show.

Rïght clicking on the screen gives a set of commands.

Sometimes it showed the same picture over and over, but the right arrow
could get past that. And it's possible I had accidentally tapped tthe
burst button on the phone and taken several pictures of the same thing.
Yes, in one case, one can tell because the windshield wiper is in a
different spot in each picture!!

Besides the USB dev mode method mentioned by others, do you have
accounts at Microsoft, Google, or Dropbox (or similar cloud storage
providers)? You don't need to do any putzing with cables and a Windows
host at your party. Just bring your Windows netbook/laptop (the USB
method would have you bringing one anyway), and use the cloud client
(OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc) on your PC to sync the photos
from your phone to view on your PC. Or, if you're showing them off to
friends, why not send them an e-mail with a linked to the shared
(public) folders in your online storage account? Besides just viewing
them at your gathering, they can view them before, during, or afterward.

There are OTG (OnTheGo) cables that would do that, but wireless sharing
(below) is easier.

I generally put photos in a private dropbox folder and then send the
link to whomever I want to share with. Nothing to stop them from
sharing with others, but I don't worry about that. You can do the same
with google photos (I only upload edited photos, keeping both versions
on my REAL computer), but the links apparently die after 6 months.

Google will store your photos at no cost, providing the greater
dimension of each is no more than 1600 pixels. I edit my photos to
decent quality within the 1600-pixel limit, which is fine unless people
(like a friend) use 45" monitors :-(

As I recall, you have a choice when uploading photos to your Google
account: keep them in original size, or have them reduced in size (which
often impacts quality only little unless you are into really high
resolution photos on large scenes). The resized photos do not count
against your storage quota, but keeping them original sized does. I
have a 15GB storage quota with Google, and have come nowhere close to
that limit; however, I don't keep stuff, like photos, permanently in my
Google account. Probably lasts a couple months for when I get around to
cleaning it out. If I've shared photos with others, and they didn't get
a copy in a couple months, they lose. If they wanted to keep it, they
shouldn't be relying on someone else keeping it online for them.

I thought Google Photos died, or it got rolled into the quota for your
Google Drive account. Used to be resized photos didn't consume any of
your online storage quota, but original sized photos did. Not sure it's
the same way now. In Google Drive, links have expirations after a
specified date and time; else, there is no expiration. If you change
the file or folder from shared to private, yeah, all those public links
go dead.

https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/auto_expire_drive_links/174000992119

That is for Google Workplace which probably means you pay for that
service tier. I only have a free account. The above article talking
about expiration might be something only business-class accounts have.
I also have nothing stored in Google Drive right now to see if my free
account can set expirations on files or folders.

I resize with Picasa, which is simple and does what I want -- including
saving the exif data. It won't enlarge, which is unfortunate. I keep
them on google photos because they're nicely organized by month or trip,
if I did something special, so I can find the name of the photo I'm
looking for a lot easier there and can then just call it by name
(date-time.jpg) on my computer, wherein they're all just in a big glob.

At one point I was storing the originals in CD-sized subdirectories. I
stopped that pretty quickly :-(

They're on-line for MY convenience, and sharing of course. I've done a
number of 'takeouts' that are stored on the Gdrive, but I'll delete
those after I've downloaded the last one. I wish there were a way to
see the Hangouts/Chat files the way they were, but apparently nobody
knows how to do that. Still, probably no loss. Email is forever, though...

It is.

Why would anyone have anything else? If you need more than 15GB just
open a new account.

Because folks don't like having to log into multiple accounts hunting
for a file.

I wish I could remember, but there was a tool that would combine Gmail
accounts, so you used one tool to look at files in all your Google Drive
accounts. The accounts were still separate, but you got a frontend that
made all of them look like one drive. You could even consolidate cloud
storage from different providers, like MS OneDrive, Google Drive,
Dropbox, etc.

When creating multiple Google accounts, they ask for information to
identify you. That means you would have to enter alternate user data
for each account, so Google wouldn't notice you're opening multiple
accounts.

https://www.multcloud.com/ is a cloud storage consolidation service. A
free acount is rather limited (5 GB xfr/month), but they have paid
programs (which aren't cheap). That's a cloud-based consolidator. I
don't remember the client-side tool that basically ran as the OneDrive,
Google Drive, and Dropbox local programs that did the consolidation. It
ran on your host, not up in the cloud.

I've never needed more cloud storage than for just one account, so far.
I have 15 GB with OneDrive: 5 GB with the free account, and 10 GB for a
loyalty bonus (it's how they rolled in the larger quota they had before
they chopped it down from 15 GB to just 5 GB for free accounts). I get
15 GB with Google Drive. Currently I'm using just 757 MB in my
OneDrive, and my Google Drive is empty. I have a free 2 GB Dropbox
account, but I only put stuff there that is shared temporarily.

If I was taxing my free cloud storage accounts, I'd look into what would
be free or cheap for a personal cloud consolidator. Having umpteen
accounts to wade through trying to find which has what would get tedious
real quick.

When I was taxing my free Google Drive (currently have 68GB stored) I
simply upped to the $2/mo 100GB subscription. Easy peasy. Dunno about
the rest here but $2/mo is not a real big drain on my finances...

No, $24 a year isn't a lot of money for most people, but for $55 (just
over the cost of 2 years of your Google subscription) you could
instead buy a 2TB external drive from Amazon. 2TB is 20 times as much
as what you get from Google. I don't know how you feel about it, but I
would much rather have the 2TB external drive, for the small extra
expense.

I doubt that. $2 is less than the price of a large soda these days. Most
folks I know drink lots of sodas every month. Course I do live in a
desert...

If by external drive you mean a local drive, that wouldn't work for me
since my Google Drive is also my off site backup drive.

And if you mean an off site drive, since I've never come close to my
100GB Google Drive limit (currently storing 68GB) why would I pay a
"small extra expense" just to store my 68GB on a larger 2TB drive??

If you want offsite backup, you might want to consider a service like
Carbonite, rather than Google. Carbonite (and others) has two big
advantages:

1. You don't have to do anything. Backup is created automatically.

2. The backup is always up to date. A backup of a file is created
whenever a file is created or changed.

Two reasons:

1. Because you would pay for it once, not every year.

2. Because the 68GB you want to store will grow over time.

But what you do is your choice, not mine. Feel free to ignore my
comments.

Actually I pay my $2 every month. It's an automatic charge on my credit
card. No muss no fuss. But again if 2 bucks a month is a burden for
someone they probably can't afford any computers or ISP services etc.
anyway...

Damn. Thinking about that, I could run down to my local restaurant that
has free WiFi and cancel my ISP and save a bunch, huh... ;)

It hasn't grown for awhile but if it does I'll just opt for the next
level. $4/mo? Damn how will I ever survive... 8-O

Of course.

Why would I do that?

Whether you pay for it once a year or twelve times a year doesn't
matter. It's the same $24 a year. My point remains that buying a drive
is a one-time payment, not a recurring payment.

Before you tell me that drives don't last forever, yes I know. Of
course. But they usually last a long time, and depending on your age
and how much you use them, they may last for the rest of your life.

But leaving all of that aside, I think my most important point is that
if you want backup to an external location, you should consider
Carbonite. If you haven't looked into it, I recommend that you do.

And if you look into it, and decide against it, I'd appreciate hearing
why.

Maybe you could. I couldn't. My computer (a desktop) is *way* too big
and heavy for me to even lift it, let alone take it to a restaurant.
I'm too old (85) and frail to do that.

Moreover if you took a laptop to your local restaurant and used a
table there for as long as I sit at my computer every day, you'd soon
get thrown out.

I can think of a bunch more reasons why doing that wouldn't be a great
idea, but you can probably think of most of them yourself.

I have multiple Google accounts and I provided exactly the same
information when I created each of them. Why would Google care if a
person has multiple accounts? There are multiple valid reasons for doing
so.
