Not even close. I'll admit the *possibility* that they could end up
with Crimea but I suspect the US, UK, eastern Europe, Poland and the
Baltics are committed to little less than the destruction not only of
Russia's military machine, but it's ambitions of conquest. Belarus

One might say in the big picture that China is using or at least,
letting Russia weaken the west. But like Russia's invasion, that
could backfire.

Already Europe is taking Obama and Trump's observations seriously and
are increasing their own defense capabilities. Germany, since WWII a
light spender on Defense, has now committed itself to having the
highest defense budget in Europe.

Macron has decided France will build a new nuclear super carrier and
is planning a new generation of military ground vehicles including
tanks. At least one report I read indicates that the French and
Scandinavians are considering increasing their orders for F35s.

In effect, Russia has kicked off a round of European rearmament which
can't be good news for Moscow or Beijing.

Due to production shortfalls in China, nations around the world are
investing in a diversification of sources for critical materials and
components.

The Ukraine war is looking to be a long term boon for the west and a
poke in the eye with a sharp stick for Russia and maybe even China.

Then your understanding is incorrect. Forgoing NATO membership was a
Pootin' demand, not a Zelensky offer. Ukraine has, in fact, applied
already but clause 10 is delaying Ukraine membership.

And understand this, there were hopes in the nineties that a
capitalist and democratic Russia might someday joint NATO as well.
This is because NATO, at a fundamental level, is a mutual defense
pact, not an "anti-Russia" one.

Seriously flawed analogy. US/Canadian relations aren't strained. The
US hasn't invaded Canada and annexed some of its territory.
Russia/Ukraine relations *were* strained, and at that, mainly because
Russia invaded Ukraine for no good reason and annexed part of it's
territory a decade ago.
