The Sambo in the story was an Indian of dark skin
(probably a Dalit), not a sub-Saharan African. The
thing I remember most about Sambo's was that
their coffee was cheap, and even worse than the
coffee at Denny's. It came in big pitchers.

We used to have a Denny's in our little town. The Covid shut it down. I enjoyed eating there. Pickin' are slim for American diner type food in this town. If it was still open, I'd eat there. We used to have an IHOP but that closed down. That's okay - the food wasn't very good. If I saw a Denny's on the mainland, I'd eat there.

I think you need to open your own American style diner. You would be
the only one in town! There was an old-school steel trolley diner near
the county court house, but it shut down a few years ago. I rarely
went, but it was still sad to lose. There are very few of those left in
operation.

I wasn't aware that Sambo's became Denny's. We had an old cloth book
with hand painted pictures used as a child's primer. Little Black
Sambo. The kid wasn't black but Indian (from India). It was quite
clear in the picture from his dress of decorated shirt and and long
shorts with shoes that came to points and curled up.

What I see online indicates we has what was probably the original book.
They don't show a tie to Denny's, only the demise of a once big chain
over snap judgements of racism. The actual name of Sambo's came from
the 2 owners, Sam and Bo.

See Wikipedia.

I can't cook American although I do make a pretty good pancake. Don't ask me to cook any potatoes, I'm afraid of the spuds. My meatloaf is okay but it's probably not an American style meatloaf. I'm liable to stuff it with kim chee.

As it goes, Sambo wasn't even black. He was just an adorable little white boy. He certainly wasn't an Indian either. There's absolutely no connection between Sambo's restaurant and Little Black Sambo, the book. OTOH, my guess is that it was an uncomfortable place for black people to see. Silly black folks!

We have several here and while Don and I don't eat out much, Denny's is
one of them.

The one hearest me were one of the first places to open the dining area
to limited seating during COVID. They seated at 40% using a 7foot
distancing. They point blank didn't allow for more than 4 to a table.
That was mostly design of room but also to reduce waitress exposure.
They did a thriving business.

In fact, most businesses here made it.

I have noticed that fresh Korean style kim chee has a distinct acetone smell/taste to it. I can't say where that comes from. Is all sauerkraut fermented? Korean kim chee can be eaten fresh or fermented. My wife prefers fresh. You have to use/sour aged kim chee for soups or fried rice. Well that's what the Asians say anyway. My mother-in-law used to put raw chopped up oysters in her kim chee. That makes my flesh crawl.

It's finished when the container starts walking through the room.

I see that you just can't get enough of my pancake pictures. No problem! It has come to my attention that pre-sliced pancakes are upsetting for some people. I cook for my family so yeah, they're going to get pre-sliced food. People other than my family get no such treatment. I might even withhold the Log Cabin and just give them strawberry jam instead.

Try again. Sambo of the story was a dark skinned Indian with very wavy
(but not kinked) hair. The book makes reference to his being from
India in several places. The Tigers are turned into ghee.... (the

What's fucked up is that the pancakes
are not even warm enough to melt that
little pat of butter, and then there the
half teaspoon of syrup.

Dig deeper, Carol. See Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo's

"Several locations were sold to Denny's, including the Fort Lauderdale
store.[14][15] Bakers Square's parent company acquired Sambo's in
California in October 1984. Many Sambo's locations were converted to
Bakers Square restaurants and the ones that weren't were sold to other
chains, including Denny's."

Greg only posted this to get the whole "black sambo" racist connotation
out there for provocation. You fall for it every time.
