If I'm still alive then, I'd be almost 85. In the event that the
Southwest Chief train still had the same schedule, we could take the
train to La Junta, CO that would get there in the morning, then take the
train back to MO in the evening, the eclipse being midday.

This trip went almost perfectly. We left early enough in the morning
that we only had about 20 miles of slowdown on the interstate, and the
rest was smooth sailing. We camped afterward, and got up early, and
were on the road back before 7:30. Just like on the way down, if we'd
have left later, we'd have hit bad traffic. The state park campground
where we stayed had been 100% reserved for last night, but was less than
half occupied. From what my son read on Reddit, folks who drove back to
St. Louis in the evening took 6 or more hours to return, when that drive
is typically less than 2, so I bet that most folks who'd had
reservations wished they'd have camped instead of driven home.

We watched from a cemetery, the third one we went to where my wife's
ancestors are buried. Her great-great-great-grandfather, Jonas Myers,
was one of the seven Confederate soldiers who were killed after they had
surrendered. Her great-great-great-great-grandfather, Richard Cowan,
knocked up her great-great-great-great-grandmother, Patience Smith, and
the illegitimate daughter married Jonas Myers. Their son was only 4
when his father was executed without a trial by Union forces. Richard
Cowan and Patience Smith were both widowed, but weren't married, and
Cowan was not publicly identified as the father because that would have
been scandalous, and he was a state legislator.

The eclipse was stunning. Afterward, we went to the park and hiked up a
mountain. My wife and I only made it about 700 feet of elevation,
whereas my son went to all the was to the top (900 feet).
