I researched this a couple of days ago - if someone goes into hospital
for any non-COVID reason, they WILL BE tested for COVID, and indeed many
of them will test positive. This is especially true since Omicron
appeared, and is therefore an unsurprising stat. However, all hospital
patients diagnosed with COVID-19 HAVE TO BE treated in isolation from
any non-COVID patients. The net result is that no matter why they were
hospitalised they end up in the COVID wards and are using all the
resources allocated to treat COVID patients. The stats showing the
differential are irrelevant to the situation in hospitals.

I'm already in the middle ground. I know that medicine and science
don't get everything right but they get it right *most* of the time so
I'm going to take my advice from qualified people, not from

No, it's sad when people are allowed to propagate false information
that can put people's lives at risk and decent-minded people think
that is somehow an infringement of their rights. To give you a
different example, I recently got a Facebook message from one of my
friends - a generally sensible lady, who likes to help people -
obviously reacting to one of these "Important, send this to all your
friends" type things. It was about the actions you should take if
someone appears to be taking a stroke. It said that the most urgent
thing is to get the person calmed down, set them into a chair and make
them a nice cup of tea or coffee, then phone for an ambulance. That is
the complete opposite of what you should do! The most urgent thing to
do if someone is having a stroke is to make an emergency call for an
ambulance as there is a direct correlation between ambulance response
time and their chances of survival and recovery. Also, you should
never give any food or liquid to anyone having a stroke or heart
attack except sips of water as it could interfere with the emergency
medical treatment they could get.

Do you think it is ok for that sort of stuff to be propagated through
social media? If not, then what is the difference between that and bum
information about vaccines?

Because Covid hit us so quickly and most of what has been done has
been reactive rather than proactive, much of the statistic gathering
has been less rigorous than usual but that doesn't change the overall
picture of Covid being a deadly disease and vaccination being a major
factor in reducing that danger.

FWIW, I think the response to Omicron turned out to be an
over-reaction but it was so contagious that action had to be taken
quickly; I'd far rather be in the position of having over-reacted than
under-reacting and ending up with thousands if not millions of
preventable deaths. I also think we should not let our guard down
because Omicron turned out relatively mild - God only knows what other
variants are lurking around the corner.

You need to be careful of extrapolating personal experience to the
wider population. We all know guys who have smoked all their lives and
lived to a ripe old age and also known people who never smoked and
died young. Does that mean smoking isn't really bad for you?

Individual rights have to be balanced against public interests. Take
smoking again; I don't know about Australia but in this part of the
world, smoking is now banned in all public places - is that an
infringement on the rights of smokers? Of course they can smoke in
private places and to me, that is the same with people refusing to be
vaccinated [1], they certainly have the right to refuse but they can't
complain when they are restricted in their mixing with those who are
vaccinated and putting them at risk.

In regard to the right to promote their views, do you think smokers
who reject the science linking smoking to cancer and heart disease
should be given free rein on social media to promote their claims that
the science is really all a conspiracy ?

Figures here are for UK but I wouldn't expect Australia to be all that
different.

They show that by November (last accurate figures available),
unvaccinated in ICU had dropped to about 47% from over 70% in the
summer. Most of that reduction, however, was due to fact that most
people had been vaccinated by that stage and that 47% was coming from
somewhere between 10 and 20% of the population i.e. unvaccinated were
around 5 times more likely to end up in ICU.

As the figures only go to November, they don't take Omicron into
account but anecdotal accounts suggest something similar if not worse.
Either way, as I've said elsewhere, we should not read too much into
what has happened with Omicron or assume it is the last variant we
will encounter.

The long term effects of Covid are well known. The long term effects of
both mRNA and viral vector vaccines (Covid vaccines are one of those two
types) are also well known. Claiming that we "don't know the long term
effects of Covid vaccines" is a bit like saying we don't know the safety
of a Jet aircraft because someone installed type of microwave oven in
the galley.

Even the two major side effects that surfaced after the vaccine release
(blood clotting & heart inflammation) are so incredibly rare that the
full regular testing regime would probably not have detected them.

Having said all that, I would also agree that many of the pro-vaxers
have also made unsubstantiated or exaggerated claims and they do
themselves a disservice by doing so. They don't need to.
