Yeah, I know that. But this is how you successfully diet.

WRONG Andy! NOT "any inconvenience". An inconvenience of skipping dessert, as you state, is forbidden. And not eating cookies and chips and drinking soda for snacks is not allowed either. And eating vegetables is also not tolerated either. And exercise, NO NO NO. That is a big big big inconvenience.

Maybe I've mentioned this before, but not long after I started teaching
at the university I attended a workshop for faculty put on by the
professors in Human Performance and Exercise Science. It was mostly
general advice on exercise, diet and staying in shape.

I remember when one lecturer said "The average American gains one pound
every year." He got no reaction, so he said "No, think about that! What
will you weigh in 30 years?"

As for myself: I was always quite lean, until one of the two summers
that I traveled around the U.S. with friends. We roamed in a van,
camping the entire way and visiting national parks, various cities, etc.

Trouble was, we cooked over a Coleman stove and split the food three
ways. But both of the other guys were much bigger than me. When the
summer was over they'd probably lost weight, but I'd gained something
like five pounds, maybe more.

I didn't like that. My solution was to stop eating lunch, at least
usually. That's been my strategy ever since. My weight isn't ideal, I
admit; but my average weight gain has been closer to a quarter pound per
year.

Well, for myself - I've weighed the same for at least 10 years - I
simply "ate less" until my weight stabilized at an amount in the range
that I felt was right for me.

I might add that I eat three meals a day and never feel "hungry" so at
least to my mind losing weight or maintaining a certain weight is no
great feat. Anyone can do it (:-)

You have only proven the former supposition and not the latter.

I am normally thin. I know that this comes mostly from heredity and not from my diet which can make you fat but not change your build. John, having no education nor the ability to think thinks that heavy people need only think thin thoughts to lose weight.

Tommy, it is YOU who has no education. Are you confused again?

I have a strategy that works for me but might not for you. After about 20 years at 185 I decided to weigh less, and now I've been 135 for several years. (Height of 5'10".) There's not a lot of effort into maintaining it.

But, a story. Years ago, before i lost the weight, I weighed myself and did some math. I announced to the family that i'd lost 1/4 pound, and would be at my goal weight in 12 years. One of my daughters said immediately "that's wrong." " You don't have a trend, you have a single event, you cannot predict from a single event."

Hate having smart kids.

Well, having proven that it wasn't a single event perhaps they weren't that smart after all. Going from 185 to 135 is a change in body weight of 37% and is significant. It took me a physical injury and total blackout for 2 years to lose 42% which put me far below a healthy weight. Made it back up to normal weight and over the cold winter with little riding, am now 7 lbs overweight. But if it ever warms up for me to ride normally, I will lose that..

5'10 and 135 seems a bit _too_ thin depending on your body type - probably ok for a sedentary ectopmorph. I'm 5'9 and when at my most fit tend to be in the low 140's. I am an ectomorph, and when not running or riding I tend to focus on core and leg strength. I don't do much for upper body development other then stretching and toning - big biceps don't help much for running and riding competitively. Still, I think 135 would be unhealthy for me.

Kudo's on having smart kids :) - they help keep us on our toes!

Interesting. I guess in the USA we have laws against discriminating against people for gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, and likely lots of other things. But it might still be legal to discriminate against people for being tall, short, fat, ugly, etc.

Most Americans should not go to nude restaurants or bars.

Strange post. The photo heading the article certainly wasn't that of
Japanese people. Is the restaurant for foreigners? Obviously Sumo
Wrestlers wont be allowed in.

And once again the indomitable Tommy posts without knowing what he is
talking about.

From the article reference by the original poster:
"only patrons between 18 and 60 allowed in, after they check in their
clothes and put on paper underwear provided by the restaurant."

I agree about the running and riding. I think it was Greg LeMond who
said a bike racer should have an upper body like a 12 year old girl's.

But I lift to maintain at least some upper body strength. For one thing,
it's necessary for getting our tandem up on the roof rack!

Yes! And ditto for smart grandkids, as in our case.

I am an ectomorph, and when not running or riding I tend to focus on core and leg strength. Well, here's the thing. I'm 69. As we age it becomes harder and harder to maintain muscle mass. I did an experiment a few years back trying various weightlifting programs, each for 10 weeks, and keeping careful records, and my strength didn't improve, whereas as a younger man I had made good progress. At work I had access to a BodPod and could accurately determine percentages of fat vs other. So I decided that as I aged the only way to maintain a good balance was to reduce the fat content. At 131 I finally made it into the "lean" category but my last test at 135 showed me the next category up.

I’m a MTB/Gravel hence upper body strength is handy, I’m noted in the club
for any hike a bike, having the strength to lift one handed bikes over
fallen trees, etc. I could do with loosing some weight but realistically
with my body build at 6ft I’d be too thin below 190lb though could do with
loosing a touch to be honest.

I'm older than you. While I'm certainly not an expert, here's my
experience: I never seemed to get measurable benefit from weight lifting
until I read an article summarizing a study on the topic. The
researchers intended to settle a longstanding question: To build
strength, is it better to do lots of repetitions with lighter weights,
or fewer repetitions with heavier weights?

Their conclusion was that it didn't matter, so long as the last
repetition was absolutely all you could do. They claimed there seemed to
be something about the muscle being worked to exhaustion that triggered
building more strength, but it didn't matter how that exhaustion was
reached. (They did say, however, that lots of lighter reps were better
at building muscle bulk, though not strength.)

I began following that advice, plus keeping a chart of the number of
reps I could manage for the various exercises, going to exhaustion
(bench presses, curls etc.). And I eventually saw very significant
improvement, increasing my rep counts by 75% to 100% in about a year.
More important, it became much easier to lift the tandem onto the car's
roof.

Unfortunately, I'm currently not lifting. I've been told to hold off
while I'm going through physical therapy for shoulder pain. I can't say
if that's caused by lifting; it may be related to playing fiddle.

Somewhere I read that some of the top power lifters work out with
single lift sets, but at close to, or at, their maximum lifting
capacity (:-)

True. Tyler Hamilton once said something like 'my pipe-cleaner arms won't win me any dates, but the probably help me win races'.
