Actually, the main purpose of marriage - or pair-bonding to go back the biological basis - is for a mated pair to raise more offspring than the female could on her own.

Human's get married - and stay married - for other reasons, but there's certainly Darwinian selection of people who can form and enjoy a stable relationship with a member of the opposite sex. The kids that get produced are evidence that selection has worked.

I doubt if an sane leftist would say anything different. Right-wingers have a "traditional" view of marriage, which means that they think that whatever the previous generation did has to be right. They do get a bit picky about which members of the previous generation should be seen as the best role models, and lots of them do seem to want to drag religion into the picture, which is a bit odd - pair-bonding has been around for a lot longer than religion.

Watching what couples do at restaurants and old sitcoms is a lousy way
to learn anything real. Incidentally for believing the media is lying to
them all the time some of these dudes sure seem to slurp up a lot of
their product.

And that using plates and napkins and chairs is nearly universal. That
meals are generally accompanied by water in glasses. That people pay
for food in restaurants. That insects are seldom on the menu. You can
learn a lot if you are observant.
