The very best mathematics teacher I had taught third-year calculus in
college, which I took over the summer. He was a visiting professor and
got hired full time somewhere else, which was too bad.

I never heard his political views. How on earth were you exposed to your
teacher's political views?

Yeah, I would have a hard time picking out the political views of any
of my teachers. I could guess at many but it would be a guess as I
don't ever recall their political opinions coming up. Oh, wait, there
was one teacher back in high school who decided to perform "Suicide is
Painless" one day to help entertain the class. That's about the
closest any teacher ever came to expressing an opinion on things
outside of the subject matter at hand.

My high school social studies teacher gave extra credit if you register to
vote. But only if you registered to vote Democrat.

Most of the time we never even knew if our teachers were married or had
kids.

Now teachers not only flaunt their private lives to their students, they
give detailed descriptions about their bedroom activities.

Yeah, I know. Really the First Amendment shouldn't apply to "too much
information" like that.

If you have pink hair, a neck tattoo, and a nose ring, literally no one
wants to know what you do with your sex organs.

The most I ever knew about my teacher's private lives was with my six
grade art teacher. One time in passing she mentioned that she liked to
walk around nude at home. Given that she also lived with another
teacher, a female science teacher, it's possible they were lesbians.
Though I couldn't say for sure because I didn't know anything else
about them.

Because he had a bullet scar over his eyebrow and a student asked him
if he had gotten it 'in the war' (this was around 1972). He hesitated
and said 'Actually I got it in Spain....' and told the story.

He >didn't< tell us what the International Brigades were but a student
later asked if he was in the Mackenzie-Papineaus which was the
Canadian IB brigade to which he said yes and told the story about how
after his discharge from the Mac-Paps played tourist from January to
September 1939 then upon outbreak of war got himself to the Canadian
consulate in London, presented his discharge papers (which detailed
what he had been doing 1936-39) and volunteered for service. He said
they gave him a uniform, assigned him as a rifle instructor to a
British unit then transferred him to a Canadian unit in Britain until
it was time to go to Normandy and points east. Then described his
university experience under the Canadian version of the GI bill.

I learned about his political views both from his participation in the
IBs and a letter in the magazine of the teacher's union (my mother was
also a teacher but even in grade 11 it was easy to look up and find
which side the International Brigades were on) which made his
political views quite clear.

Again - no question his views were far left but equally clear he was
an absolutely first rate teacher and from his pre-calculus class I was
very well prepared for university.

While his students didn't need a crowbar to get his political views
out of him, he wasn't at all forthcoming until it was clear the right
questions had been asked of him.

Well our history teacher had been a Canadian military intelligence
officer and some of the kids had heard him and the math teacher
arguing through the staff room door. The physics teacher had emigrated
from Germany to Canada and would have been about 12-13 years old when
the war ended - my grade 12 year we finished the curriculum a couple
of days early and he was happy to answer the question of how he had
come to Canada. Turns out he had been in an SS training school for
boys at war's end and gotten basic firearms training including
grenades, had a few stories on that and by 1950 when he had come to
Canada he had been a very successful amateur boxer and came to Canada
just after he had missed qualification for the German Olympic team.

This was especially of interest to the students since the 1976 Olympic
middleweight silver medallist was a graduate of our high school and he
and the physics teacher (who outweighed him by 30 lbs and at least 25
years did a chairity exhibition match). (We also had an Olympics
silver medallist figure skater amongst our alumni though not my year
which is mostly significant since our class of 1973 - including me -
has their 50th anniversary reunion next Saturday and I'm going)

Whereas back in the 70s we knew who had kids. There was a certain
merriment over one cheerleader at our senior high who by her surname
was obviously the daughter of our jr high science teacher and the
joking was that she obviously physically took after her mother since
any girl with her father's looks would never have made the
cheerleading squad!

By the time I graduated several teachers had small family photos on
their desks.

I think it's fair that kids know their teachers have lives outside the
classroom but they shouldn't be 'in their face'. After all - both the
aforementioned math teacher (who served in Spain) and our
vice-principal were heavy smokers as evidenced by their discolored
fingertips but we never ever saw them actually smoke.

What finally convinced me that my children and I were different
generations was when my history major daughter asked me to tell her
about "something that happened in my lifetime but before I was old
enough to understand or remember" (she was referring to herself not
me)

I said "how about the time the President of the United States barfed
on the Japanese prime minister?" She was with her friends and none of
them believed me but after I insisted it was true and that it was
"right at the beginning of 1992" (she was born in 1987 so she agreed
that date satisfied her question) all of them were looking at it on
Youtube on one of their phones.

All less than a minute after her question.
