I didn't abuse Daryl. I suggested Daryl might need a good mechanic since
his question inferred that he had problems he couldn't work out. That
happens sometimes and often "fresh eyes" are helpful, and good mechanics
have better "fresh eyes" than shit ones in my experience. So yes, having
a good mechanic physically have a look at the actual car *is* a good
suggestion and not "having a go" nor does it imply that Daryl isn't a
good mechanic. People can get bogged down sometimes, it happens.

Then I suggested there wasn't enough information to go on and asked if
it had a MAF sensor.

The only abuse here has been by team FLCJC. The way I see it is if you
were genuine about calling out bullying and gang attacks you wouldn't be
joining in on the victim blaming.

He did, however it was prefaced with a slap in the face. Daryl actually
had a very good idea what was wrong but was only asking what others
would look for given the symptoms.

Everything here turns to a full house of flames. It's par for the
course. I'll admit I through a bit of fuel on the fire at times but
sometimes you get sick of the gang of 4 picking on 1 person. It spreads
the load when they start picking on me and to some extent you.

I replied that it had a MAP but no MAF to which he didn't reply.
I'm going to look at the car on Saturday, I will reduce the plug gaps
and see if there is any improvement.
I'm pretty convinced that its the coil packs, one was replaced but the
others are OE so more than 20yrs old, they are over $100 each so I don't
want to replace them till I'm sure not that the owner cares, he's not
exactly short of a dollar.
BTW I found something more about the E Type that has no spark, I thought
that they were just going to take it to the place that fitted the
aftermarket ignition to be repaired but they (son of the owner and his
mates) didn't want to because apparently he took the car without telling
his dad who is OS in the USA so they are trying to fix it without the
dad finding out, naughty boys:-)
Its in the same factory as the Clubman so I will probably have another
look at it on Saturday.

It may not, but it's a zero cost option. That it has a discoloured plug
that follows a particular coil suggest that the plug isn't firing
properly, and the coil is most likely the culprit.

A few thousandths off the plug gap may be all it needs.....

It would likely have a MAF sensor or a MAP sensor or both. Can't really
do without these days Darren so asking the question determines which.
That is necessary because they have different fault symptoms.

And all that will do is either mask the real problem or, as I suspect,
lead to a different kind of issue. What it does is show that *neither*
of you understand coil operation. That *you* don't understand coil
operation, Darren, comes as no surprise to me given you have never
undertaken any training as a mechanic. That Daryl has no clue on the
matter *is*. After all, he would (should) have studied all this at
Batman Automotive College.

If, by swapping the coil packs, the problem *moves* and follows the coil
pack, then you can be sure that the coil pack is at least partially
faulty. Put a new one in and check it out. If the problem goes away, you
have solved it. What should have been done when *one* was replaced was
replace *all of them*. They have all done the same amount of work so if
one has gone faulty it's a safe assumption the others might go soon.

That's is a sensible suggestion if you read through Daryl's opening post
and clearly not an insult. I explained why elsewhere but if you're not
sure of a problem and you think $500 *might* fix it - and you are asking
for opinions from people in a newsgroup - I'd suggest consulting a good
mechanic to look at the actual car is wise. What if he overlooked
something simple? From the information provided in the initial post
there is no way you could remotely diagnose this fault with any degree
of accuracy. That's why you ask questions.It's not a reflection on
Daryl's abilities as a mechanic, even the best get stuck at times.

Nothing vague about what I was trying to establish here.

There was absolutely no malice in my post and I was the first to respond
by some margin and try to help and all it got me was a gang attack by
you and your mates.
