It's often what hacks reach for because they are unskilled in proper
diagnostic procedures, too lazy to follow them or make assumptions.

It's a last resort and rarely needed if you know what you are doing.

It depends on the pressure to get a fix. If the customer is pressing,
and a new part is not available, switching similar parts to see whether
the problem moves may be the quickest way to a diagnosis. It is, however
something that you don't do without considering all the possible
consequences.

The difference between the world that you inhabit and the one that I
used to is the amount of pressure to fix things quickly, major banks
don't like their systems down, they calculate the cost in thousands of
dollars a minute.

No one was suggesting otherwise, and claiming that it is a "last resort"
shows a clear lack of any kind of real world experience. In fact it's
often the best option in situations where a fault is pinpointed to a
particular area but testing shows components to be within an acceptable
range. This is particularly so in situations where faults can be erratic
and are not present when the mechanic has his hands on the car looking
for them.

A case in point. One of the people I do some work for on occasion is one
of my son's old school teachers who owns a VE R8 Clubsport, and being a
typical Commodore it's always got something wrong with it. They're a
*cunt* of a car, but that's another story. One day a couple of years ago
he wanted me to do a service on it, and he claimed it had a problem
where it randomly reported a cylinder misfire error on number 3. He
claimed that it just did it at random and there was no pattern to it,
and with his little plugin bluetooth dongle he was able to reset it and
go about his business.

But he wanted me to look at it while I was doing the service, and in
doing so I found nothing wrong with it. It wasn't doing anything wrong
while it was here, and everything checked out fine. So, in situations
like that where a car has a known fault but i won't reveal itself the
best thing to do in my experience is to "set a trap", and the trap to
set in this case was to swap injectors 3 and 1 around and see if when it
next reported a cylinder misfire it moved to number 1. It took some
time, but the fault occurred again and reported the misfire on number 1
as anticipated, and a new injector was duly ordered and fitted and the
fault hasn't occurred since.

This is just regular, common sense approach to dealing with issues that
aren't immediately obvious. Despite the myth perpetuated by some with a
more limited range of experience, vehicle faults don't always give
themselves up easily when you're looking for them :)

Worse is when a new part *is* available. Some parts can not be returned
once fitted, especially anything that needs programming or is linked to
the system which means if that component that cost hundreds or even
thousands does not fix the problem someone gets to pay for it. You can
be assured that a shonk will simply pass that on to the customer along
with an excuse as to why it was "necessary".

That's why you take your vehicle to someone who has all the diagnostic
tools *and* has the skills to use them.

That's just self-serving wank and irrelevant anyway I'd expect them to
have a level redundancy built into their system if they knew what they
were doing. For many people where their vehicle is their livelyhood the
pressure to resolve the issue quickly and properly is *very* real and
that scales up. There are other reasons too but like your cheap and
failed attempt to pump up your ego that's not the point of this discussion.

That the case in the automotive field as well which the slug puller
clearly isn't at all familiar with. Factory manuals are used to diagnose
faults right down to the nitty-gritty so you don't have to resort to
swapping parts.

Hint folks, *don't ever* take your car to a "mechanic" who thinks
swapping parts is a legitimate diagnostic procedure. They don't have the
right tools, won't have the skills, don't have factory manuals and they
will make assumptions. IOW it's going to get expensive...
