You mean Trockenbeerenauslese, truly a very sweet desert wine? Made
from grapes that have dried on the vine, affected by noble rot and the
grapes are individually selected. Trocken normally means a dry wine,
but here it means the grapes have dried on the vine.

Not really a quaffing wine and, as you might expect, not a cheap wine.
At the end of a meal a small glass, drunk slowly is just the thing.
Vintage or Tawny Port to follow.

Those were the days.

I am surprised that Aldi had any, good Trockenbeerenauslese are not easy
to find.

The problem I heard about was some makers adding ethylene glycol (AKA
antifreeze) to cheap wine to make it taste sweeter.

As was I, which is why I bought it, I had seen it at private parties in
Germany, of which there are not many. (seen it, not offored it)

Can anyone remember the name of the stuff that they add to the grapes in
Germany to help fermentation? I have used it here (.ie) as well.

Hardly an 'extra' ingredient, then ?

No but I know what the unscrupulous added leading to a serious scandal
some years back. Ethylene Glycol, good for cooling, Spitfire, Hurricane
and (I assume) Bf109 engines. Good for stopping water cooled car engines
from freezing, sweet tasting to humans and lethal in any quantity.

It had been a cold summer and the grapes had not ripened enough to
produce enough sugars. I wonder what the French did? :-j

The Romans used to sweeten their wines with Lead Acetate (I believe) and
look what happened to them, well after about 600+ years.

Yes.

How many people remember that 1976 was one of the best years for
Beaujolais? Probably nobody. I had to look it up. Yet everybody who
was around at the time of the Austrian wine scandal remembers it even
if they can't remember the exact year and they probably still skirt
past the Austrian wines and choose something else to drink.

That was Austria, not Germany, although the Austrian wine did get
exported to Germany and bottled there, or blended with German wine.

AH yes 1976 - I remember it being lbooyd hot, I remember having to
wear a black short-sleeved tee shirt to steward the folk festival and
peeling my arms like a snake shedding skin afterwards, I remember ladybirds
in vast numbers (the year before it was aphids), I remember getting ynvq
for the first time. If I had to pick a year to put on endless repeat it
would be high on the list.

I don't pay much attention to wine.

Given the German attitude to what can or cannot go into their beer, I
can't imagine anything being added, except a little insinglass after
fermentation is over.

It's mounted on a cupboard in the kitchen where it does daily duty
grinding coffee into its newish 3D printed catch tray.

Apologies to Germany, as soon as I started to read I realized that I had
remembered wrongly.

However responsible German blenders should have been testing what they
put into their blends.

I know at the time we were not drinking German wine because it was
affected.

Alsace wines were in many cases a very good substitute.

1975 was also a hot and dry summer. I was sent on gardening leave for
the whole summer, not as a result of being a naughty boy. I had just
completed a post-graduate one year course at my employer's expense and
they discovered that they had nothing appropriate for me to do. I spent
4 weeks camping in the Cotswolds.

It was the hot dry summer of '75 and poor rainfall over the winter of
'75/'76 that made the drought of the summer of '76 so severe.

In the summer of '76 my desk was in a small office with no outside
windows and one skylight which could not be opened. On the other hand my
flat was 5 minutes walk from Stokes Bay and looked out onto Stokes Bay.

I've got one of their coffee-grinders. It's a lovely solid piece of kit,
but ... hootered if I want to grind coffee by hand. Last thing I need,
first thing in the morning, I'd want lots of coffee first. Then I'd want
an electric one.

"Religious camels" is an even more unlikely concept, Saudi or Bactrian.
Especially given that the morality police'd probably chop their hooves
off for it. Is that what they've got ? Pads ? _Feet_, ffs.

Religiously persecuted refugee camels braving the Channel in search of
something alcoholic to swim in, that's what we need. Liven the place up
a bit, and confuse the navy. Take that, Patel !

'85 ? Blimey, I thought I remembered it being in the '70s.

I'm not sure I've ever noticed Austrian wine. Which probably means I've
chosen something else, yes. (I'm not that well up on the subject).
