Just for the record, the first thing my wife said, on reading about
Warnie's death, was: "what was he doing there?" That place is well known
for "discretion" and the cops in Bophut are as crooked as they come. Was
just discussing this issue this morning with some friends down at the
market. These friends are of the same opinion.

Just as an instance, a guy died up here in Queensland recently. He died
rescuing somebody from the surf, he was also a highly regarded research
doctor working on cures for diseases, not only did he die in a selfless
act but his death leaves a hole in a worthwhile endeavor. It made about
20 secinds on the TV news and about 8 column inches in the paper.

That's exactly what he did, he did it very well, but it's quite a
limited talent really.

Reaction of people is one thing, it's the reactio of the media that I
was commenting on. Rod Marsh's family must be feeling that he wasn't
anywhere near as important.

From what I've read he wasn't the fittest person even when he was

Yep, this time next week we will be in Brisbane, first time we have been
out of Vic since before Covid.

I can do better than that:-)
Got pictures of the wife and I with Dennis Lillee, meet him twice at a
couple of trade shows and spent time chatting, he was very generous with
his time and a terrific bloke with a great sense of humour.
I reminded him of a ODI final against the West Indies at the MCG in 1989
(I think it was 89), he was bowling to Viv Richards and he was starting
his run up by pushing off the boundary fence, he laughed and said " I
was a bit of a smart arse back then":-)

Yes according to the Wiki article I read.

Yes and no, helping people and possibly the entire nation feel better
about themselves cannot be said as not contributing anything.
There is value to peoples well being from sport and entertainment.

Agree the news media are well and truly over the top about it but maybe
they think that making positive statements about someone who was a hero
to many will help take their minds of all the other negative shit.

Would you say the same thing about Bradman?
Many people and I'm one of them rate him only second to Bradman in
Cricket, the only other Australian sports person I'd rate as anywhere
near those 2 is Sir Jack Brabham.

Not at all, before Warne leg spin and spin bowling in general was a
dying art, now its very popular.
Both my Grandkids have started playing cricket this season, the town
where they live only has a population of 11,000 yet they have more than
15 senior and junior teams so cricket is as popular as ever and partly
due to super stars like Warne.

That's true but how do you value the contribution sports stars and/or
entertainers make to the mental health of the population?
It's not as easy to quantify that value as it is to quantify the
contribution of say the scientists who invented Covid vaccines but they
both have value.

I understand what you are saying and I've said much the same when some
"celebrity" has passed away and the press has IMHO gone overboard but as
I said above their contribution does have value.
I suspect that in Warne's case the press going over the top was as much
to do with the sudden and unexpected nature of his death than anything
else, if he had been in his 80's and he died after a long illness the
coverage would have been more subdued.

Yes indeed! Want some *heroes* to look up to? Then look to those
*civilians* taking up arms against the Russian invaders yet facing sure
death because they are hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. They are
the true heroes in my book.

Legend, yes, I can deal with him being called a *cricketing legend*..
One thing he was also well known for - not keeping his dick in his
pocket. He was a well known philanderer. That will all be glossed over
now he has passed away.

Thats something that you've made up, can you point to any claim that
I've made of being an "Ace" programmer? I think not, I was good at it,
there were others better than me.

I stand by everything that I've claimed, if you can prove otherwise then
go ahead make my day.

What an idiotic statement, you seem to have a comprehension problem, I

Personally, I don't like the way that the word "Hero"is bandied about
these days, it always used to mean somebody who had given of themselves
usually by putting themselves in danger to help others.

He belonged to a different era, things move much more quickly these
days, I'm not sure that millennials other than cricket tragics would
think of him as anything other than somebody that they vaguely remember
being mentioned by their parents.

You'd probably have a hard time finding people under 40 who remember
Jack Brabham.

On the contrary. He was one of those sports people who's celebrity
status rose above the field of his chosen sport. My Mother is in her
80's and has never watched a game of cricket in her life, but when I

Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. I'd happily wager that the Brazilian
media went far crazier about his death than ours has about Warne's. As
for which one was more "well known" it's impossible to say. Both were
very well known around the world.

Well that is a tragedy, but I would suggest that he wasn't *famous*, and
that's the difference. Both the media and the public react to the death
of famous people in a far different way than they do to ordinary plebs,
no matter how great a mark they've left on society.

Probably not, but the point is that Warne's death was a big enough story
that one of the world's leading newspapers ran a piece about a man from
the other side of the world who was one of the best players of a game is
so unknown to the general populace that it had to be explained to them
in a way that they could understand by relating Warne to a similar
position of a Baseball pitcher.

Kind of how Time Magazine did a story about Don Bradman after he passed
away where they stated that from a statistical perspective he was the
greatest sports person who ever lived with no one else ever having
dominated their game to the degree that he did. I can't remember the
exact analogy they used now to make it relatable to an American
audience, but they likened Bradman's record to Shaquille O'neal having
scored 50 goals in every match he ever played in his career for him to
have come close.

It's no more or less "limited" that anyone who is famous for any other
endeavour.

The timing of the deaths of these two is extremely unfortunate, and as
brilliant a Keeper as Rod Marsh was he wasn't the dominating game
changer that Warne was.

If David Lee Roth died tomorrow and Mick Jagger died two days later,
which one do you think is going to dominate the headlines?
