Win8 was indeed a steaming crock of shit which is why M$ updated it to
Win8.1 post haste. I can't say Win10 is as bad as Win8, nowhere near it
in fact! If a person's first experience of computers was Win8, I could
imagine that would be enough to drive them to any other OS, even the
*dark side* (Mac). LOL

WIN10 took years to almost remove its many bugs
Most certainly better than it was but still corrupts hard drives
Meaning one should check using this method monthly
Two stage check each stage can take time
After Admin Command prompt run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
When finished run
sfc /scannow
when finished type Exit then enter

You may have read it, but you obviously did not understand it. It was
written by somebody actually running W11 and included screenshots. It
would appear that you would rather believe some know nothing idiot on
the web who probably believes that COVID vaccine alters your DNA.

Windows 8.1 was/is not all that bad, once you've figured out how to
get rid of the Fischer Price GUI.

But that indeed only works for those who were used to Real Windows (TM).

For those for whom 8[.1] was their first experience of computers, they
would probably be in dire need for a clothing repair shop, because they
would have tried to put the device in their shirt pocket, thinking it
was some kind of gigantic smartphone.

I didn't mind 8.1 all that much. 8.0 was horrid.

I'm flexible enough. I use Win, OS/X and Linux. I just deplore pointless
OS or UI changes, and M$ makes heaps of them, Win8.0 being the perfect
example.

Yes, M$ tried to make Windows the all singing, all dancing OS for every
kind of device. Even Apple didn't do that. Apple had OS/X for computers,
iOS for handheld/touch devices. Even now, they have forked iOS into iOS
and PadOS because they realised people were using iPads differently from
their iPhone. Add keyboard and mouse and the iPad transforms into a
pseudo lappie. That said, I don't use my iPad that way - I have a
MacBook for that purpose.

The wife is perfectly happy with 8.1, but then she just uses it for

If that's all the OS is being used for, she could be just as happy with
Linux. There are even Linux UIs that mimic the Windows UI quite well.
She may never know the difference.

if she's happy with 8.1 why would she want to change? and potentially
encounter new problems

Update phase-out is the only reason for the move up that I can see.

Same here, but my wife also uses a slide scanner to digitize old
slides, so she needs software support for that scanner, so Linux (or
ChromeOS or macOS) isn't really an option. Same for - company-dependent
- software for making printed photo albums.

I'm also quite happy with 8.1. I got my 8.1. laptop just before 10
came out and when it came out, it wasn't ready for prime time by a long
shot, so I rolled-back to 8.1

So we'll try to finish the 8.1 ride till we 'have to' move to 10 and
when 10 support ends, we'll reconsider our choices.

What is your reason for sticking with version 8.1 ? Is it because you
don't think your hardware can cope with version 10 ?

Gough Whitlam when Joe Riordan lost the seat of Philip in Sydney’s
eastern suburbs. “Comrade, comrade, how negligent of you. To lose a
seat in which there is not one but three cemeteries is unforgivable.”

I had an uncle that lived in Wellington. He voted Liberal all his
life until he passed away 10 years ago. Now he votes Labor.

As I wrote, when 10 came out, I shortly tried 10 and then rolled back
to 8.1, so I still could go to 10 if I wanted, but I don't.

Why not? No advantages, less control over configuration, etc., less/no
control over updates, weird update scheme with frequent problems, etc..
And, don't fix what ain't broken.

The entire Parliament was sacked, for treason under Whitlam
Constitutionally Parties are not recognised. So when a Government was
found to be removing ties to USA and Britain's orbit moving towards
that of the Communist and Third World powers, with strong support for
the "Arab lobby", Britain and USA would of found that treachery.

Arab financiers offered lower interest rates on governmental loans
than US banks/financiers. The Middle East at the time was awash with
"petro-dollars", as the price of oil quadrupled between 1973 and 1974.
Whitlam allowed Saudi Arabs to build a Mosque in Sydney/Lakemba.
Whitlam was a immoral communist working to remove ties to USA and
Britain's orbit moving towards that of the Communist and Third World
powers, with strong support for the "Arab lobby".
