With Clarkson in a Volkswagen Up, Hammond in a Ford Fiesta and May in
a Dacia Sandero, the trio have been driving around the Crimean
peninsula. But to complete their journey they must face one last
fearsome challenge; to drive into Chernobyl. Cue as much wasting of
fuel as possible. Clip taken from series 21, episode 3.

For how long? The background radiation would drop exponentially
util it was no immediate threat. What lasts thousands of years is
dust with radioactive isotopes. When those lodge in a body, they
tickle nearby tissue with alpha particles until they become
cancer. Years later.

I read somewhere the surface radionuclides are gradually washed into
the ground with rain & snow.

Not much dust on Pacific islands, unless you go mucking about digging
things up. Humidity and typhoons keep the dust down.

Unlike the USA where Democrats bent on world domination spread nuclear
poison all over New Mexico, Nevada dustbeds, and later built a radioactive
creek in St Louis.

Sssshhh. The elimination of web know-it-alls could be the end result.
There is an old man living at one of the lesser toxic zones of
Chernobyl. His wife and daughter both died of effects of radiation. The
Government has allowed him to live there as a study and he has no
family. There was a full program on American TV a few years ago that
actually filmed the children's toys and household furnishings to
indicate how rapidly and fully the surviving residents fled. The old man
also trapped animals for the scientists to study. Also the plant life.
The Russian Scientists are way ahead of us on those studies. I have
searched the Web for that Documentary, but no luck. I believe it was on
PBS a number of years ago.

Dogs breed from 9 months of age and have short lifespans - and I bet around Chernobyl they're even shorter than usual.
Humans have to survive almost two decades to produce offspring, something that is massively less likely if they are subjected to long-term exposure to radioactive contamination such as the widespread environmental pollution caused by the nuclear industry around Pripyet and Chernobyl.

Both Ukraine and Belarus are still saddled with enormous containment and decontamination costs relating to the radioactive mess that has spread about both above ground as well us within the ground water - in Belarus' case, it's costing them a double-digit percentage of their total GDP.

Plenty of other longer lived wild animals there doing fine.

The Chernobyl disaster technically took place in the former Soviet
republic of Ukraine, but radioactive contamination hardly respects
geopolitical borders—especially the border with Belarus, a scant six
miles from the site of the meltdown. Roughly two-thirds of the
territory of Belarus suffered significant contamination, and within
two years of the disaster, the Belarusian government had designated
the most toxic area, along the Ukrainian border and closest to the
plant, the Polesie State Radioecological Reserve. This restricted
zone, once home to scores of villages, was to be used exclusively for
scientific monitoring and research. In November 2018, as tourism to
the Chernobyl area of Ukraine continued to grow, Belarusian
authorities tentatively began offering tour routes through their
Reserve. I’ve led some of these Exclusion Zone tours in Ukraine for
years (Disclosure: including for Atlas Obscura), so the following
summer I decided to pay Belarus’s Reserve a visit. The prescribed
tours usually took the form of highly structured one-day itineraries
focused on select locations, but I asked if it might be possible to
explore further afield, on a two-day “monumenteering” trip. The
Reserve’s administration approved my request.
