But there will come a time when they say "sorry too old" and then you'll
have to go to the little bloke down the market, who can mysteriously
still replace the battery ...

I have a Brita water filter. The first couple of times the clock
battery ran out they provided me with a new lid complete with clock. The
next time I was told the lid was no longer available. But I discovered
that they used the same clock in more recent models, and when I
explained that I still had a few old style filters to use up Brita would
suply me with just the clock. I am now on my second one obtained like that.

Similar with me, but they never offered me a lid, just the clock.

The Apple guy was very open with me. He said my iPod was out of
support and Apple could not replace the battery. However, this did
not mean the battery could not be replaced. He even gave me a name I
might like to contact. In the event, I went to a different supplier.

Mysteries never end with technology. I decided to yank out the aerial
leads and put them back with a few twists each way and COM7 is now
back. They did not seem to be loose. My signal must be very marginal
as the other multiplexes continued to work.

I too have a Brita jug, it's not as though I put gallons of water
through it, just enough for the coffee machine and making ice-cubes.

I think the gizmo in the lid does nothing more for me than flash to warn
"filter is a month old" then I ignore it for another month before
replacing it, does anyone use theirs enough that it flashes sooner than
a month?

I have a computer with ports like that. When I switched it on and it
complained there was no internet I disconnected the ethernet cable and
inserted and removed it 5 times at each end and ethernet connection and
internet access was restored. That same computer has one of its USB
ports that sometimes needs similar treatment.

I assume that some form of corrosion builds up and it just needs to be
scraped off occasionally.

I think it is just a timer in my jug, though I have seen a newer jug
with something that possibly counts the number of times it is refilled.

I have never tried it but I would guess for my jug it would flash after
a month even if the jug remained unused for the whole of that time.

Like you I don't put a lot of water through mine. It is only used to
fill the kettle and it does take something out of the tap water so that
the kettle remains fairly free of limescale in a hard water area.

I set my timer when I change the filter, then reset the timer the first
time it flashes, then replace the filter the second time it flashes.

Mine has a couple of electrodes that poke into the top tank, so it knows
when you've refilled it.

Well they are still doing the iPhone 6, and I don’t think I’d seriously
want to use anything older.

Are you sure? My iPhone 7 is running the latest OS, version 14.5 - I
updated it the other day. I also have a 6S running v14.5 - I think the 6S
is the oldest phone that will run the latest OS, below that the hardware
can’t cope.

it's a straightforward timer that's totally unnecessary and designed
solely to encourage you to replace the filter before it's necessary,
leading to more sales of their very expensive filters and more profit.

The filter needs replacing only when the water goes cloudy when it's
boiled, and that you should be able to see for yourself especially if
you have a clear kettle. The time when that happens is dependent on the
amount of water you put through the filter, not on its age. I would
think the timer is set up to be for a fairly large family with a pretty
insatiable desire for tea.

Hence why people seem to replace the filters less often than the maker's
recommendation.

I don't put filtered water in the kettle.

Might I recommend this

https://www.vyair.com/en/compact-4-stage-reverse-osmosis-50-gallons-per-day-system.html

We purchased it for use with a tropical fish tank, but it has since become
very useful as a general source of water for coffee machines and the
kettle, and some “sensitive” plants. And you don’t contribute to the waste
mountain that disposable filters add to. You do need to plumb it in though.
I’ve fitted a T (well Y to be more accurate) piece to the washing machine
feed point.

I hope the app doesn’t disappoint now you can run it…

I did once have an iOS device that had very little free flash storage left,
and that failed to download an OS update. I believe Apple have now made
them more compact. Could that have been at the root of your problem?

I've got 12GB (out of 32GB) of storage left. Should be enough.

COM 7 operates on a frequency, that many HDMI cables seems to radiate.
Andy Burns of this parish calculated the likely frequency/harmonic
relationship that might explain it.
Try disconnecting and/or moving any HDMI leads around.

Why on earth not? The main purpose of a Brita filter surely is to
reduce scale deposits in devices that heat water up, eg, er, a kettle.

In short FullHD over HDMI uses a clock rate of 742.5 MHz
COM7 broadcasts on 742-750 MHz

I thought it was the other way around, that standing water promoted
the growth of bacteria and therefore the greater danger came from lack
of use. I also thought the build-up of bacteria took place over time
and that replacement after four weeks was a safety measure. I adopt
the risk-averse appoach and replace mine each time the timer flashes.

Given this explanation and the transmitter being 20 miles away and
COM7 being lower power than the others and outside my aerial group (B)
it must be a miracle that I receive it at all.

Maybe. However I don't have any of the 'usual' items like an iPlod. What I
use is a portable device dedicated to playing high quality audio files.
This is quite useful at times and gives excellent results. But it limits
are:

1) Only takes two external tiny-SD cards. This limits how many files I can
keep on it at a time.

2) Sealed metal case and an internal battery.

Works fine at present. But at some future point the battery may cease
working correctly. At some point I'll also find that I've maxed out the
(storage) size of the cards which will be awkward. But that's a minor issue
compared with it ceasing to work if a battery can't be replaced.

Wow! I've been wondering when the 2 x 256GB cards in my Digital Audio
