I don't want to be cynical but it sounds like by the time the battery
goes, you will be looking for an upgrade anyway.

What is the limiting factor? I assume it is the portable device's
capability of reading large-capacity cards, as SDXC cards of 1TB
capacity are already available - at a price:
<https://www.picstop.co.uk/sdxc-memory/lexar-professional-633x-sdxc-uhs-i-card-1tb.html>

I'm not sure how far away SDUC cards are of capacities much larger than
that.

I assume that you can buy and use many more tiny-SD cards provided you
only have two in your device, so you could could divide your collection
logically and just pre-configure the device with the cards holding the
recordings you want to listen to at any particular time.

I would guess that because your device has a metal case, unless it is
soldered it can be taken apart, if only you knew how. Have a look
through the vast numbers of "how to ..." videos on youtube. You might
find something close enough to your device to show you where to start
with the dismantling.

I had a device with a battery that still worked but was gradually giving
shorter useful life. I found something on youtube that showed me how to
dismantle something very similar to my device and although it needed a
couple of special tools, they were available on ebay at £3.75 a set plus
postage. When I took the device apart, I could read the battery type
for the existing battery and I could find someone on-line who could
supply a replacement. I now have my gadget back to the working duration
it had when new.

I use the same filter for 2 months. I don't think I use it enough to
justify a mothly change of expensive cartridge.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I always assumed the risk came
from stagnant water and therefore it is lack of use that justifies the
need to replace the cartridge. Does anyone know?

Abstract

The microbiological quality of filtered water in a commercial water filter
system (Brita) was tested in households and in two laboratories. In 24 of
34 filters used in households, bacterial counts increased in the filtered
water up to 6,000 cfu/ml. In 4 of 6 filters tested in the laboratory,
bacterial counts in the fresh filtrate were higher than in tap water after
approximately one week of use both at room temperature and at 4 degrees C,
suggesting growth or biofilm formation in the filter material. In some
cases colony counts in the filtered water were 10,000 times those in tap
water. The filter material of 5 of 13 new commercial filters was
contaminated with bacteria or moulds. National or international regulatory
agencies should ensure that water filters marketed for domestic use do not
allow deterioration in the microbiological quality of drinking water.

I don't guarantee to be right, but my definition of stagnant water is
that it is stationary and there is something in the water that deteriorates.

In a filter jug, anything likely to deteriorate would be in the filter
not the water. The water is also not what I would call stagnant because
in my case where I change the filter every 2 months, I put fresh water
into it twice a day, and that means it is not going to be stagnant, just
slow moving.

So how long do those 50 gpd aquarium filters you recommended last? and
how much bacteria/mould do they get by the time you replace them?

I don’t think reverse osmosis membranes let the bugs through. They would
bung up if they grew a bio film and not let any water through.

I used to have a water filter jug. I always kept it in the fridge for
microbiological growth rate control and also always boiled the filtered
water for microbiological extermination as all I ever drank was tea.

Anyne leaving it out at room temperature or in a sunny window or
drinking the filtered water unboiled was playing Russian Roulette in my
view.....

Given that it works very well, the only reasons I can think of for that are
that it goes wrong, or it can't read larger SD card capacities I want to
use. The latter is possible. But I may simply remove some items to add new
ones as that is simple enough.

Alternatively, I could get more cards and swap them about, but that is a
PITA to do as they are the 'tiny' versions of the cards and changing them
is pretty fiddly.

The limiting factor at present is that I don't know what max size the
device can read OK. Not all small devices implement to full spec.

I've just explained that in a previous posting.

Yes. I may have to do that. But for obvious reasons only when I feel the
device is failing anyway, so in that sense I can't lose if I mess up.

A problem with modern devices is that the internals may require surface
mount techniques. Not ye olde soldering iron. Alas, my eyes and hands
aren't up to the tiny stuff.
