But that is what astronomers do, so that other people don't need to.

An astronomical event normally referred to as a supernova is a one-off
event, albeit of significant duration. Only type 1a supernovae (rare
events where one star strips material off a binary twin until it suffers
gravitational collapse) can be used for distance measurement, the other
types are dying stars and provide no formula to calculate distances. A
cepheid variable is a recurring event which has a regular timescale that
allows distance to be calculated from the apparent brightness which is
why those in particular, rather than supernovae in general, can be used
for astronomical measurement.

Some people never do. There is still a flat earth society ...

Also unlikely to be true.
Once could be a simple mistake. Twice could be coincidence. You need at
least 3 wolves to form a proper conclusion. Anything less is just an
example of the odious "cancel culture".

You also have to bear in mind that what people say and what people do
might be different. A high proportion of anti-vaxers have had at least
one jab.

I know all that, but my reply was to Java Joke who claimed that there were
no statistics on supernovas, but of course now after 2 mins googling he's
an expert.

Apparently Bill's favourite channel before GB News arrived, Ch 5, which
explains why I hadn't heard about it. Well that's his & their funeral.

.... and I don't believe there are much if any statistics on that. For a
start, how would we know if a supernova *had* destroyed a galaxy,
especially if it was a long way away? By definition, we only see ones
that haven't been destroyed, or, more correctly, that hadn't been
destroyed by the time their light left on its journey to us. Your claim
was like saying: "I can't see any dead people, therefore nobody dies!",
which is obviously false.

No, the social burden is people like you who don't care about others,
and recklessly endanger them by moronic behaviour such as riding around
the London Underground without wearing a mask.

If only it were true! Blowjob would never have happened. Brexit would
never have happened. Trump would never have happened. But all three
did happen, disastrously, but people still vote for them now!

If people were in full view the whole time and when they died disappeared
in a light bright enough to see across the universe which latest for hundreds
of years then it would be impossible not to see dead people and their effect.

Why reckless? Who's going to get hurt? All you geriatrics have had your double
jabs and people who can't have them won't be on the tube in the first place.
Perhaps you just like wearing a gimp mask for fetish reasons and are upset that

Again, you are making claims about what we don't know and can't see
based upon what we can, but, anyway, this whole irrelevant subthread was

your obviously erroneous claims, in this particular case:

But snivelling cowards like you wouldn't have been on the tube then, you'd
have been hiding under the bed in full PPE so no harm done. But frankly I
wouldn't give a toss if harm was done. If I really cared passionately about my
fellow man I wouldn't drive a car in case I ran someone down or the pollution
caused someone to die. But I bet you do and unlike you I'm not a hypocrite
who pretends to care about others but only gives a shit about himself.

Fine, but don't tell others what they should do re covid restrictions.
