Indeed they did, but I would suggest that they also played the decisive
role in defeating the Nazi's as well.

The Russians fought alone against the Germans on the Eastern Front, but
it's interesting to note that even thought the Germans were hopelessly
outnumbered by the Soviets it still took the Russians 3 years to push
them back to Berlin. It's *also* interesting to note that the Russians
suffered more casualties in doing so than the Germans did in the entire
war from East to West and everything in Between.

I don't doubt for a second that had Germany not had a Western front to
contend with combined with a immensely destructive allied bombing
campaign that devastated their industrial ability to wage war they would
have overwhelmed the Russians regardless of how many unarmed peasant
farm boys the Russians may have stood up in front of the advancing Panzers.

On the other hand, I *also* have no doubt that had there not been an
Eastern Front leaving Germany to focus their entire war effort on
controlling Western Europe, They would have been decisively defeated at
the hands of a US lead Allied force and for the exact same reasons that
the Japanese were.

From the moment the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and brought the
Americans into the war, an Allied victory was assured.

The exact number of Russian "military" casualties will never be known
due to the fairly unorganized state of their military resistance, but
I've seen figures quoted as being between two and four times the number
of Soviet military deaths on the Eastern Front as Germany suffered for

Either way, the one certainty is that the Russians paid a *far* heavier
human price in Victory than the Germans did in defeat.
