it happens - a number of farmers & truck drivers are injured by their own
vehicles every year. Presumably the truck broke down or something was
flapping about in the wind. Driver stops to investigate; either the brake
was not applied properly or the brake failed.

UK it was about 40 deaths last FY. However I think the population working on
farms is (probably) a better metric for comparison than the population size?

I'd imagine Spain's got a much larger farm work population than the UK?

Must admit I'm surprised it's as low as 40 a year in the UK when I look back at
all the 'stuff' I saw done on farms during my childhood, given most UK farmers
are my age give or take and (probably) had similar upbringings.

my father was a dairy herdsman for much of his working life. He died in
1988 from renal cancer. I am pretty sure there is a link between the way he
handled organo-phosphates and his death. Although, with the way he used a
chainsaw, he was lucky to make it to his mid 50s.

As far as current times are concerned, I think the machinery is so much
safer now than when I last worked on a farm in the 1980s. It's much more
difficult to roll a tractor with the width of the axles and tyres. and the
cabs are more robust if you do manage it.

While this week the fuckwittery continued with the M62 blocked (yet again) by trucks jackknifing in the snow. 120 trucks stuck for 7 hours. Presumably thousands of cars.

For 40 years I've wondered why trucks don't get stuck with a £1000+ fine for blocking the motorway in snow, if they have failed to fit winter tyres (or chains). Bain of our fucking lives for years, stupid irresponsible cunts, just get off the fucking road until it's been cleared/gritted.

Made good winter courier money on the XT500 every time it snowed heavily, because the M8 down to Greenock and East to Edinburgh was always blocked by trucks. Even better, up to Perth and Aberdeen.

contactless car keys which you have to 'keep away from the house door or

A client I once worked for had a large fleet of several thousand transit
type vans for their workforce and the safety bulletins regularly
reminded them to HIT - handbrake on, in gear, turn wheels - as every
couple of weeks or so there would be a report of a runaway.

Like so many employers they were adamant that each incident was a one
off and always the employee's fault. The idea that they should use their
purchasing power to demand more effective handbrakes - and more idiot
proof handbrakes (i.e. clearly on or clearly off; buzzer if door opened
while brake off etc) - didn't seem to figure in their thinking.

Our Yorkshire Farm is Channel 5's most popular show and gets more viewers
than Eastenders. I think the matriarch gets more column inches in the TV
gossip media than JC as well.

As for JC, I watched 1 episode but have not been inclined to go back to
watch more. I prefer series like OYF which are closer to the reality end of
