Nope, I just couldn't recall the name of the children's request show. I
probably heard it on both.

Junior Choice (with Ed Stewart, IIRC) was a programme which began when
that newfangled Radio 1 started in 1967. My childhood listening before
that was its predecessor, Children's Favourites with Uncle Mac on the
Light Programme.

(Uncle Mac played Last Train To San Fernando for me when I was about six
years old after I got my dad to write a letter requesting it. I was
thrilled beyond words when I heard my name on the wireless.)

Then there was the ‘Freight Train’ - ‘Fooled ya, I fooled ya’ - carrying
undeclared live stock. (And I don’t mean Lonny Donnigan’s ‘Last Train to
San Fernando’ either.)

‘Lumpy Bisto gravy’??? I’ll have none of yer ‘lumpy’ round ‘ere’ thank you!
I used to stand in front of the stove and continuously stir the contents of
the tray so there were no lumps in our gravy, thank you very much! (But I
did have to stand back for a few seconds when the sprout / cabbage water
was added to the gravy mix) - I was only a nipper then. There was also
Billy Cotton’s Band Show….

The lyrics you quote are from Lonnie Donegan's groundbreaking version of
Rock Island Line, in which the undeclared cargo is pig iron; the
livestock was his cover story. Freight Train is a different song by
Nancy Whisky and Last Train To San Fernando was by Johnny Duncan & His
Bluegrass Boys. All three are stone cold classics, IMO.

I stand (well, sit actually, keyboard of iPad on my lap and all that)
corrected young Sid; I knew pig iron came into it somewhere [pigs is
livestock aren’t they so pig iron…) as to the artists involved - c’mon,
I’ve been to sleep a few times since then!!!!

Slight swerve - this thread has reminded me of something I wondered
about recently.

I was watching an episode of Brokenwood Mysteries which is set in New
Zealand and on this occasion concerned a "historic village museum". A
white woman, talking to a Maori man, used the word "native" and he
objected strongly. AIUI (but I could be quite wrong) "Native American"
is a perfectly acceptable term to use to refer to a person who used to
be so wrongly called a "Red Indian." Is the term "Native New Zealander"
not equally acceptable? Or was it simply that the woman actually just
used the word "native" on its own, rather than "Native New Zealander",
or, better still, "Maori"?

Git aht ov it!

You weren't my mother. To the end, invitations to dinner were to be
politely turned down. She did good cakes mind, and could make a reasonable
fist of egg and chips.

Kathy Kaye. And Alan Breeze for the low notes. And George Chisholm on
'bone.

The others a wee bit too early for me.

Life in boarding school would never replace a family but my second school
where I went just before my 12th birthday was very generous compared to my
first one.

Not only were we allowed to bring personal radios, and our own record
players or portable tape recorders.

At weekends we girls were usually allowed a radio in each meal table at
breakfast and for “Top of the Pops”. It was a mean person or teacher who
stopped us hearing those. We did have them at lunch on Sundays as well :
I personally had two girlfriends whose parents were posted abroad, there
may have been more.

Sincerely Chris

Unless you are someone else I suggest that there were no Nando's when
you were little.

We took the grandchildren out and went to a Nando's for the first time.
The good lady wife gathered the numerous items to be ordered. Then
she looked around for a waiter type person to take the order. After
some time one of the more frequent Nando visitors in the family advised
her that she had to go to the counter to order. Needless to say we have
never again visited a Nando.
