I'm sure we went to the Kardomah too and I know it's fondly remembered by
many. It still existed in 1972 when I went to uni but I don't think it
lasted much longer.

Covid? COVID??? Oh Yes, that’s the wording trotted out by every company and
organisation who are so tight-arsed they won’t employ staff to deal with
any aspect of customer care or service isn’t it?

We weren't allowed to visit fish and chip shops when I was a child.
That didn't stop my best friend Liz and I visiting such establishments
after swimming at Byrne Avenue Baths but I never let on to my parents.
I was 18 and the family had been working all day at the house we were
about to move into when, on the way home, my father suggested we stop at
the fish and shop to get supper. My parents wouldn't go in themselves
but sent my sister and I to get them.

When I was about 13 we moved into Southampton but I still do not
remember much eating out. However at about 16/17 when my parents were
(I suspect) financially a little better off we did start having fish and
chips more regularly on a Friday evening. A year or two later (they
were running a sub-post office and shop from the move into Southampton,
well Woolston actually) they regularly booked a dinner at a small local
hotel on a Friday night during December as it was the end of the week
and December was obviously a very busy time.

But otherwise eating out was on when on holiday and there were not many
of those.

That would have been well before computerised accounting was on the Horizon
for P.O.’s then?

Yes, very much so. But the PO Inspectors would visit randomly and the
office (and shop) would have to close whilst they counted the cash, all
assets and other documents on the site and undertake a full
reconciliation. Any cash shortage had to be made good or you were
prosecuted. But it was all bits of paper. There were two employees and
the sub-office did a balance every Friday night. It never did - but if
it was within £5 it was simply carried over to the next week. In those
days pensions were all paid in cash as were all Giro benefits and much
else (child benefit etc). Radio licences were sold and so on.

In those days the HO team kept an eye on how much cash was shipped to
each branch (because the cash outflow was always much greater than
income) and if the amounts flowing into each branch suddenly changed
then an inspection would happen - typically pension payments in total
were similar each week (remember we are talking £000s). So a branch
needing an extra £10k would warrant a visit.

The inspectors were told the computer was impossible of making a mistake
and applied the same principles - which is simply wrong.

I am pretty sure that Horizon was coming was one of the reasons she
retired. I think it might have just about arrived - I cannot remember now.

I had a reasonably functional accounting system running on the (North
Star) Horizon when the PO was prosecuting subpostmasters for errors caused
by rusty wires on their standard-issue abacus. Good machine, the North
Star Horizon.

Jimmy Clithero appeared in panto one year while I was at school in
Coventry: 1963 - 1868 pantos. Forget which year. Various factories in the
city supported our specialist boarding school. This was one event. The
theatre is close to the fire station in the city centre) (or was, bot
visited since 2012). We were given tea in the fire station afterwards and
the stars would come round and see us.

I was always bored by both panto and meeting people I’d never heard of but
some of my girlfriends, were ready with their autograph books! One year
Anita Harris was there. I forget why I know this: she was obviously popular
among my friends or did something they remember to this day.

Sincerely Chris

Sounds more like a small town to me.
Ours in Kent had a fish & chip van once a week, a service which has been
revived recently by an ex-villager who must have remembered it from her
childhood.

I think it has a lot to do with geography. I noted driving through
Yorkshire last year (or perhaps the previous year) that every village
would seem to have at least one such establishment. Whereas in
Hampshire they were clearly not so ubiquitous.

Checking said village on t'map shows that there is now a hamburger joint
(which may well serve fish and chips) as a takeaway in the middle of the
village.
