In retrospect, it wasn't very funny, was it ? Never mind.

I'm glad I seem to have missed the excitement.

Yup training for CAD but with pencil, pen, draughting board, etc,
without which you cannot design and build an Apollo space ship, St Pauls

Did you catch that Truss/Lavrov discussion of a few weeks ago ?

A couple of months back, I had a book out of the local library; an
English woman with a Russian mother, studying Russian at Uni, writing
about spending a year as a foreign student in a town in southwest
Russia. Place called Воронеж (Voronezh) ... wot the UK Minister for
Foreign officially informed the Russian minister that the UK will never
accept Russian occupation of. Fell for a trick question. Granted, it was
only by coincidence that I knew the answer our foreign misinster didn't,
but I still find it very disturbing that she's so dangerously
overconfident.

But, stay ! The plot thickens. WikiP tells us that it shouldn't be
confused with Voronizh-with-an-i, and goes on to mention a village
called Voronezh-with-an-e in ukraine; which, when I look for it on
googlemaps, is spelled Voronizh-with-an-i. Confusing, or what ? And it
only took 5 minutes to get confused. (I learnt the russian alphabet in
skool. It's not often useful. The relevant letters are the same in both
scripts, what fun !)

Bored, moi ?

Kiev vs. Kyiv : afair first is Russian spelling and therefore most
common in wordwide usage, second is Ukranian spelling and thus less
common worldwide.
Above: seems Googlemaps uses Russian spelling.

At least, that's what I understood. I can't spell in either Russian or
Ukranian.

/Alphabet/ - the words written in it could be in other languages.
"Kyiv", frinstance, is a transliteration of the ukrainian
spelling/pronunciation. Umm ... I'm assuming Ukraine uses cyrillic,
mainly based on the way that gurglemops gives both, I don't actually
know, and am proud of my ability to be wrong.

Mooglegaps gives Cyrillic & Latin versions for some countries, only
Latin for others, I haven't spotted anywhere where it doesn't give a
latin version (#include political conclusions to taste). And further
east, Chinese + Latin. Here, that is, maybe it behaves differenly for
browsers elsewhere, ICBA to go globetrotting just to find out.

Looking at a program on tv a few years ago about russian agriculture
recovering after Gorbachov's blunders, the program was about a former
kolkoz (sp?) near a town called kalach, where a decisive battle was
fought during WWII. The place is now run by a German manager.

One of the problems that the US has with Russia is the Russian's won't
sell their land too foreigners, just lease it.

I think its pronunciation (sp?). There is a city, now in Ukraine, that
in 1914 was part of Austria-Hungry, and called `Lemberg. After 1920, it
was Part of Poland, and called Lvov, and after WWII, is in Ukraine and
called Lviv, Cyrillic letters. During WWII, the City of Kharkov was
debated between Germany and Russia, with different names by each side.

In Ireland, there is a city up north called Derry by one side and
Londonderry by the other. I wait until I hear what the person I am
speaking to says the name, and I follow their usage, Not worth arguing
about.

Yep just as Bombay didn't really change name to become Mumbai we
just switched to using a (presumably) better transliteration.

Actually, we have a length of cane which has been used for the stirring
of paint for a couple of decades now.
Each end has a build up of paint which make them at least double the
thickness of the middle section (it's beginning to look like a Q-tip).

It is currently white, but a cross section would probably look like one
of them bullseye gobstoppers we had as nippers.

We had (not biblically) an inglish teacher called Juicy Bateman for two
reasons. He would spit as her talked. No-one sat in the front row.

Secondly he had a habit of saying, "Do you see, Boy?"

My Dad had a bent screwdriver like that, traces of layers of many

As the two words are pronounced differently, is it simply that we've
gone from calling it what the colonial English called it to calling it
what the Indians call it, and changed the transliteration
correspondingly? Rather like if the French started calling London
"London", or the English started calling Germany "Deutschland"?

The same goes for Beijing, which doesn't sound much like Peking unless
the "j" is pronounced the same as the "j" in Rioja.
